Nutrition is taking in food and using it for energy, growth and repair. The human digestive system carries out five steps in order: ingestion (taking food in), digestion (breaking food down), absorption (passing digested food into blood), assimilation (using food in body cells) and egestion (removing undigested waste).
Digestion is of two kinds: mechanical (chewing, churning, peristalsis) and chemical (enzymes breaking large molecules into small ones).
The alimentary canal is: oral cavity → pharynx → oesophagus → stomach → small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum) → large intestine (caecum, colon, rectum) → anus. Swallowing moves food from the mouth to the stomach, and peristalsis — wave-like contractions of the canal muscles — pushes food along. No chemical digestion takes place in the oesophagus.
Associated organs add juices: salivary glands (saliva), liver (bile), pancreas (pancreatic juice) and the gastric and intestinal glands.
Oral cavity: salivary amylase starts starch digestion. Stomach: HCl kills germs, converts pepsinogen into pepsin, and gives the acid pH pepsin needs; pepsin breaks proteins into peptides. Small intestine: bile from the liver emulsifies fats (bile has no enzyme); pancreatic juice brings amylase (starch), trypsin (proteins) and lipase (fats); intestinal juice completes digestion. So carbohydrates, proteins and fats are all digested in the small intestine.
The small intestine has many folds and is lined with finger-like projections called villi, each covered with even smaller microvilli. This hugely increases surface area to promote food absorption. Each villus has a network of capillaries (absorbing amino acids and sugars into blood) and a lacteal (absorbing fatty acids and glycerol into lymph). Bile is stored in the gallbladder and released into the duodenum through the common bile duct.
Diarrhoea: frequent watery stools — water is not absorbed properly. Constipation: hard, infrequent stools when too much water is absorbed or movement is slow. Ulcer: a sore in the stomach/duodenum lining. Causes: infection by Helicobacter pylori bacteria and long-term use of NSAID painkillers; smoking, excess alcohol and stress make symptoms worse. Signs: burning stomach pain, loss of appetite and weight loss, and vomiting blood in severe cases. Treatment: antibiotics for H. pylori, antacids and proton pump inhibitors. Prevention: avoid excess painkillers and spicy food, eat a balanced diet.

6. What are the causes and symptoms of ulcers?
Answer: Causes: Helicobacter pylori infection and long-term NSAID use; smoking, alcohol and stress worsen it. Symptoms: burning stomach pain, loss of appetite, weight loss, and vomiting blood in severe cases.
1. Describe the absorption of food in small intestine.
Digested food is absorbed in the small intestine, mainly the ileum. Its wall has folds, villi and microvilli giving a huge surface area. Amino acids and sugars pass through the thin villus epithelium into blood capillaries and are carried to the liver and body cells; fatty acids and glycerol enter the lacteal and travel in lymph. Water, minerals and vitamins are also absorbed here, while undigested food passes to the large intestine.
2. Explain the role of oral cavity in the digestive system.
The oral cavity is where digestion begins. Teeth mechanically break food into smaller pieces, increasing surface area. Saliva moistens food, makes a soft bolus for swallowing, and salivary amylase starts chemical digestion of starch. The tongue mixes food with saliva and pushes the bolus back for swallowing.
3. Explain the structure and functions of stomach.
The stomach is a muscular, J-shaped sac between the oesophagus and duodenum. Its wall churns food and mixes it with gastric juice (HCl + pepsinogen). HCl kills germs and activates pepsin, which digests proteins into peptides; mucus protects the wall from acid. The stomach stores food, turns it into semi-liquid chyme, and releases it slowly into the duodenum through the pyloric sphincter.
4. Justify the importance of liver and pancreas in digestion.
The liver makes bile, which emulsifies fats into tiny droplets so lipase can act, and bile is stored in the gallbladder. Without bile, fat digestion is very slow. The pancreas makes pancreatic juice with amylase, trypsin and lipase — the only juice that digests all three food types — plus bicarbonate to neutralise acid. Together they make digestion in the small intestine possible; without either organ, digestion would be incomplete and nutrients would be lost.
1. Why does someone with liver disease have difficulty in digesting fats?
Answer: Because the liver makes bile, and bile emulsifies fats. With liver disease, less bile reaches the intestine, so fats stay in large drops, lipase cannot act well, and fat digestion and absorption fall.
2. Why is it important to maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria?
Answer: Gut bacteria help digest food, make some vitamins, train the immune system and block harmful germs by competition. If the balance is lost, digestion worsens and infections and gut disorders become more likely.
3. How can a malfunction in the cardiac sphincter lead to acid reflux?
Answer: The cardiac sphincter closes the stomach entrance so acid stays in the stomach. If it weakens or fails to close, stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus — acid reflux — causing heartburn and damage to the oesophagus lining.
4. Why is it necessary to store bile in the gallbladder before it is released?
Answer: The liver makes bile continuously, but fat digestion is only needed after meals. The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile between meals and releases a strong dose into the duodenum exactly when fatty food arrives.
