Evolution is the change in heritable traits of a population over the course of successive generations. It involves gradual changes in characteristics passed from one generation to the next, and such changes allow organisms to adapt to their environment. A species is a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Charles Darwin sailed on HMS Beagle (1831–1836) and observed: fossils of extinct animals resembling living ones; many unique species on the Galápagos Islands; and finches whose beaks differed from island to island, matching the foods available there. He concluded that species change over time and that living species share ancestors.
The survival and reproduction of individuals with advantageous traits is called natural selection. Steps: (1) Variation — individuals differ (by mutation, recombination, gene flow). (2) Overproduction and competition — more offspring are born than can survive, so individuals compete for food, space and mates. (3) Survival of the fittest — individuals with traits suited to the environment survive better. (4) Reproduction — survivors pass their advantageous traits to offspring. (5) Spread — over generations the advantageous trait spreads through the population. A new variation that appears suddenly and helps survival does not disappear — it spreads.
Speciation is the formation of a new species from an existing one, when populations stop interbreeding and diverge. Two types: Allopatric speciation — a population is split by a geographic barrier (e.g. a river, mountain or sea); after many generations the separated populations evolve into different species. Sympatric speciation — a new species forms within the same area, without a geographic barrier, e.g. by behavioural differences, different feeding habits or chromosome changes that prevent interbreeding.
Sources of variation that can lead to speciation and evolution: mutations (new gene versions), recombination (crossing over and independent assortment in meiosis), gene flow (movement of genes between populations) and genetic drift (chance changes, strong in small populations).
Fossil record (palaeontology): fossils in rock layers show life changing over time — older layers hold simpler and extinct forms (e.g. trilobites, ammonites), younger layers hold forms closer to today's life, and transitional fossils link groups. Comparative anatomy: homologous structures have the same basic bone plan but different functions — e.g. human arms and dolphin fins (also bat wings and bird wings) — showing common ancestry; analogous structures (bird wings vs butterfly wings) only look similar. Vestigial structures are reduced organs with little or no present function — e.g. human ear muscles and the human appendix (no longer useful for digestion), and pelvic bones in whales, whose ancestors lived on land. Selective breeding (artificial selection) is like natural selection but humans choose: farmers choose the best cows to breed, and many potato and apple varieties (cultivars) were bred from wild forms — both depend on variations among individuals.

1. Write a short note on selective breeding.
Answer: Selective breeding (artificial selection) is when humans choose organisms with desired traits and breed them over generations. Example: farmers breed the best milk-giving cows; many potato and apple cultivars were bred from wild forms. Like natural selection it works on existing variation, but the selecting agent is humans, not the environment, and change is much faster.
2. What are the two types of speciation?
Answer: Allopatric speciation: a geographic barrier splits a population; separated groups evolve independently into different species. Sympatric speciation: a new species forms within the same area without a geographic barrier, through behavioural, ecological or chromosomal differences that stop interbreeding.
3. Provide examples of homologous structures.
Answer: Human arm, dolphin fin (flipper), bat wing and bird wing: all share the same basic bone arrangement (humerus, radius/ulna, wrist, digits) inherited from a common ancestor, but are used for grasping, swimming and flying. Whale flippers and horse forelegs are further examples.
4. List the steps in the process of natural selection.
Answer: (1) Variation exists in the population. (2) More offspring are produced than can survive, causing competition. (3) Individuals with advantageous traits survive better (survival of the fittest). (4) Survivors reproduce and pass advantageous traits on. (5) Over generations the advantageous trait spreads through the population, which evolves.
1. Explain the theory of evolution by natural selection.
Darwin (and Wallace) proposed that populations contain heritable variation; more individuals are born than the environment can support, so they compete; those with traits better suited to the environment survive and reproduce more (natural selection); their advantageous traits spread through the population over generations, so the population changes — it evolves. Over long periods, accumulated changes plus isolation can produce new species. Finches' beaks matching island foods and antibiotic resistance in bacteria are observed examples of the same process.
2. Write a note on the observations Darwin made during his voyage.
On HMS Beagle (1831–1836) Darwin saw: fossils of extinct giant animals (e.g. ground sloths, armadillo-like glyptodonts) closely resembling living South American animals, suggesting descent with change; distinct but related species on different Galápagos islands; and finches with beak shapes matched to each island's food (seeds, insects, cactus). He also saw that island species resembled mainland species more than species elsewhere — pointing to common ancestry and local adaptation.
3. Describe the sources of variation.
Mutations: random changes in DNA create new alleles — the ultimate source of new variation. Recombination: during meiosis, crossing over swaps segments between homologous chromosomes and independent assortment shuffles whole chromosomes, producing new allele combinations in gametes. Gene flow: migration and interbreeding move alleles between populations. Genetic drift: chance events (especially in small populations) randomly raise or lower allele frequencies. Together these supply the variation natural selection acts on.
4. Justify how fossil record provides an evidence of evolution.
Fossils are remains/traces of past life preserved in rock layers, with deeper (older) layers holding older forms. The record shows a sequence: simple life first, then increasingly complex forms; extinct groups (trilobites, dinosaurs) that no longer exist; and transitional fossils with mixed features linking major groups (e.g. feathered dinosaurs to birds, land mammals to whales). This ordered change over geological time is exactly what evolution predicts — species appearing, changing and disappearing — and cannot be explained by species never changing.
5. Write a note on homologous structures as an evidence of evolution.
Homologous structures are body parts with the same basic anatomical plan but different functions, inherited from a common ancestor — e.g. the forelimbs of humans (grasping), dolphins (swimming), bats (flying) and birds (flying) all contain humerus, radius, ulna, wrist bones and digits in the same arrangement. If species were unrelated, such detailed similarity would be pointless; common ancestry explains it: the plan was inherited and then modified by natural selection for different uses. Analogous structures (bird vs insect wings) show the contrast: similar function, different origin.
6. What are vestigial structures? Explain how they provide evidence of evolution.
Vestigial structures are reduced organs that have lost most or all of their original function in a species, e.g. human ear muscles (cannot move ears usefully), human appendix (no longer needed for digesting cellulose-rich food), and pelvic bones in whales (remnants of hind legs of land ancestors). They are evidence because they only make sense as leftovers of ancestors in which they were functional: whales inherited pelvic bones from land mammals, humans inherited an appendix from plant-eating ancestors. A species designed from scratch would not carry useless remnants.
1. Why is variation among individuals important for evolution?
Answer: Without variation, natural selection has nothing to choose from: if all individuals were identical, all would survive or die equally and no trait could spread. Variation supplies different traits; the environment favours some, and those spread, so the population changes. Variation is the raw material of evolution.
2. How do fossils help scientists understand the history of life on Earth?
Answer: Fossils are dated by their rock layers, so they order life's history: when groups first appeared, how they changed, and when they went extinct. They reveal past environments, link living groups to ancestors through transitional forms, and let scientists reconstruct evolutionary trees and the timing of major events like the origin of land life or mammals.
3. Why can isolation lead to the formation of new species?
Answer: Isolation (geographic or reproductive) stops gene flow between groups, so each group accumulates its own mutations and adapts to its own environment independently. Over many generations the genetic differences grow so large that the groups can no longer interbreed successfully even if they meet again — they have become separate species.
