Air enters through the nasal cavity, then passes the pharynx, larynx (voice box), trachea (windpipe), bronchi (one to each lung), bronchioles and finally the alveoli — tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange happens. The trachea and bronchi are kept open by C-shaped rings of cartilage, so the passage never collapses.
Breathing means the movements that take air in and out of the body. It is not the same as gaseous exchange (diffusion of gases at the alveoli) or cellular respiration (energy release inside cells).
Alveoli maximise gas exchange because they have: very thin, moist walls (one cell thick), a huge total surface area (millions of sacs), and a dense network of capillaries around them. Oxygen diffuses from alveolar air into blood, and carbon dioxide diffuses from blood into alveolar air. That is why alveoli are surrounded by capillaries — to exchange gases.
Inspired air is about 21% oxygen, 0.04% carbon dioxide, 79% nitrogen. Expired air is about 16% oxygen, 4% carbon dioxide, 79% nitrogen (plus more water vapour).
Inhalation (breathing in): the diaphragm contracts and flattens and the intercostal muscles contract, pulling the ribs up and out. Chest volume increases, air pressure inside falls, and air rushes in. Exhalation is the reverse: diaphragm relaxes and domes up, intercostal muscles relax, ribs move down and in, volume falls, pressure rises, and air is pushed out.
The breathing rate is controlled mainly by carbon dioxide in the blood: when CO₂ rises (e.g. during exercise), breathing becomes faster and deeper. Humans breathe 16–20 times per minute at rest, rising to 30–40 times per minute during exercise.
Bronchitis: inflammation of the bronchi (cough, mucus). Emphysema: the walls of alveoli are broken down, so exchange area is lost. Pneumonia: infection filling alveoli with fluid. Asthma: airways narrow and swell, so exhaling is harder than inhaling. Lung cancer: uncontrolled cell division in lung tissue, strongly linked to smoking.
Cigarette smoke contains nicotine (directly causes addiction), tar, carbon monoxide (cuts oxygen delivery), formaldehyde and benzene (causes blood cancer, leukaemia); ammonia frees nicotine into a gas. Smoking also raises cholesterol and blood pressure, stains teeth, causes bad breath, and raises tuberculosis risk 2–4 times and pneumonia risk 4 times. World No Tobacco Day is 31 May every year.

1. Differentiate between gaseous exchange and breathing.
Answer: Breathing is the physical movement of air in and out of the lungs. Gaseous exchange is diffusion: oxygen moves from alveolar air into blood and carbon dioxide moves from blood into alveolar air, across thin moist walls.
2. Differentiate between breathing and cellular respiration.
Answer: Breathing is a physical process of moving air in and out. Cellular respiration is a chemical process inside cells that breaks down food (glucose) with oxygen to release energy, producing carbon dioxide and water.
3. What is the function of cartilages present in the walls of trachea and bronchi?
Answer: The C-shaped cartilage rings keep the trachea and bronchi open and prevent them from collapsing when air pressure changes, so air always has a clear passage to the lungs.
4. What is the average breathing rate in human at rest and during exercise?
Answer: Humans breathe 16–20 times per minute in normal conditions, i.e. at rest. During exercise or hard work, muscles carry out cellular respiration at a greater rate, so more carbon dioxide is produced; the respiratory centre in the brain detects the greater concentration of carbon dioxide in blood and speeds up the rib and diaphragm muscles, so the breathing rate increases up to 30–40 times per minute.
5. How does the structure of alveoli maximize gas exchange?
Answer: Alveoli are tiny, thin-walled (one cell thick), moist sacs with a huge combined surface area, surrounded by capillaries. Thin moist walls shorten the diffusion distance, large area gives more exchange surface, and rich blood supply maintains concentration gradients.
6. List the symptoms, causes, and treatments of bronchitis.
Answer: Symptoms: persistent cough, mucus/sputum, wheezing, chest discomfort. Causes: infection (viral/bacterial) and irritants, especially cigarette smoke and polluted air. Treatment: rest, fluids, avoiding smoke/irritants, medicines for cough/infection as advised by a doctor; chronic cases need medical care and quitting smoking.
7. Mention the symptoms and treatments of emphysema.
Answer: Symptoms: shortness of breath (worse with activity), chronic cough, wheezing, tiredness. Treatment: no complete cure — stop smoking, breathing exercises, oxygen therapy in severe cases, medicines that open airways, and medical follow-up.
8. What are carcinogens? Name any two carcinogens present in cigarettes.
Answer: Carcinogens are substances that can cause cancer by damaging DNA and causing uncontrolled cell division. Two in cigarette smoke: tar and benzene (also formaldehyde).
9. Complete the following table: Feature | Inspired Air | Expired Air — Oxygen 21% | ? ; Carbon dioxide ? | 4% ; Nitrogen 79% | ?
Answer: Completed table: Oxygen — inspired 21%, expired 16%. Carbon dioxide — inspired 0.04%, expired 4%. Nitrogen — inspired 79%, expired 79%. (Water vapour is higher in expired air.)
1. Explain the process of inhalation and exhalation step by step.
Inhalation: (1) Diaphragm contracts and flattens; intercostal muscles contract and ribs move up and out. (2) Chest cavity volume increases, so air pressure inside the lungs falls below outside pressure. (3) Air flows in through the nose, trachea and bronchi to the alveoli. Exhalation: (1) Diaphragm relaxes and domes upward; intercostal muscles relax and ribs move down and in. (2) Chest volume decreases, pressure inside rises above outside pressure. (3) Air is pushed out of the alveoli through the air passageway.
2. Write a short note on the major parts of the human air passageway.
Nasal cavity: warms, moistens and filters air (hairs and mucus trap dust). Pharynx: common passage for air and food. Larynx: voice box with vocal cords; its epiglottis stops food entering the windpipe. Trachea: windpipe kept open by C-shaped cartilage rings, lined with mucus and cilia that trap and sweep out dust. Bronchi: two branches, one to each lung, also cartilage-supported. Bronchioles: smaller branches without cartilage, leading to alveoli where exchange occurs.
3. Describe the functions and locations of the bronchus, trachea, and alveoli.
Trachea: in the neck and chest, in front of the oesophagus; carries air between larynx and bronchi and is kept open by cartilage. Bronchus (plural bronchi): in the chest, one entering each lung; carries air from trachea into the lung and divides into bronchioles. Alveoli: tiny sacs at the ends of bronchioles deep inside the lungs; their thin moist walls and surrounding capillaries are the site of gaseous exchange.
4. What are the possible causes of lung cancer? Explain the harmful effects of smoking apart from lung cancer.
Lung cancer causes: cigarette smoking (main cause), exposure to tar, benzene, formaldehyde and other carcinogens, polluted air and passive smoking. Other harmful effects of smoking: nicotine addiction; carbon monoxide reduces oxygen delivery; higher cholesterol and blood pressure, weakened blood vessels and heart disease; stained teeth, bad breath, 2–3 times higher tooth loss; tuberculosis risk 2–4 times and pneumonia risk 4 times higher; cancers of mouth, throat and bladder; harm to unborn babies and to non-smokers nearby.
1. What can happen to breathing if diaphragm stops working properly?
Answer: Breathing becomes weak and shallow because the main muscle of inhalation cannot flatten and enlarge the chest. Less air enters, oxygen supply falls, and the person may need help (e.g. ventilator) in severe cases; other muscles can only partly compensate.
2. Why is it dangerous when smoke particles settle inside lungs?
Answer: Smoke particles damage alveolar walls, block small airways, carry carcinogens that damage DNA, and reduce the exchange surface. Over time this causes bronchitis, emphysema and cancer, and makes infections more likely.
3. Why does the trachea has C-shaped cartilage rings while bronchioles do not have them?
Answer: The trachea is a large single tube that must stay open against pressure changes, so it needs strong cartilage support (C-shaped so the oesophagus can expand behind it). Bronchioles are tiny and many, embedded in elastic lung tissue that holds them open, and they need to stretch during breathing — rigid rings would prevent that.
4. During asthma attacks, patients feel harder to exhale than to inhale. Why is it so?
Answer: In asthma the airways narrow and swell and mucus increases. Inhalation is helped by active muscle effort, but exhalation is normally passive and relies on elastic recoil — narrowed airways trap air inside, so breathing out becomes difficult and wheezy.
Human Respiratory System takes air from the nose to the alveoli and exchanges gases with the blood. Air passageway (1): nasal cavity → pharynx → larynx (voice box) → trachea (windpipe) → bronchi → bronchioles → alveoli; the trachea and bronchi are kept open by C-shaped cartilage rings. Breathing (air moving in and out) is not the same as gaseous exchange (diffusion at the alveoli) or cellular respiration (energy release inside cells). Alveoli (2): very thin, moist, one-cell walls, a huge total surface area (millions of sacs) and a dense capillary network; oxygen diffuses into blood and carbon dioxide diffuses out. Inspired air is about 21% oxygen, 0.04% carbon dioxide, 79% nitrogen; expired air is about 16% oxygen, 4% carbon dioxide, 79% nitrogen. Breathing (3): inhalation — diaphragm contracts and flattens, intercostal muscles pull the ribs up and out, chest volume increases, pressure falls and air rushes in; exhalation is the reverse. The rate is controlled mainly by carbon dioxide in the blood: 16–20 times per minute at rest, 30–40 during exercise. Disorders and smoking (4): bronchitis (inflamed bronchi), emphysema (alveolar walls broken down), pneumonia (alveoli filled with fluid), asthma (narrowed airways, exhaling harder than inhaling) and lung cancer, strongly linked to smoking. Smoke contains nicotine (addiction), tar, carbon monoxide (cuts oxygen delivery), formaldehyde, benzene (leukaemia) and ammonia (frees nicotine); smoking raises tuberculosis risk 2–4 times and pneumonia risk 4 times.
