A neuron has a cell body (with nucleus), dendrites (short branches that receive messages), and a long axon (carries messages away). Many axons are wrapped in a fatty myelin sheath made by Schwann cells, which speeds up impulses. A nerve impulse is an electrical signal that travels across a neuron.
Three types: sensory neurons (receptor → CNS), motor neurons (CNS → effector) and interneurons (connect sensory and motor neurons inside the CNS). A stimulus is any change in the environment that a receptor can detect — e.g. light, sound, heat, pain, taste.
The central nervous system (CNS) is the brain + spinal cord; the peripheral nervous system (PNS) is all nerves outside it. The brain has three main parts. Forebrain: cerebrum (thinking, memory, senses — damage here affects memory), thalamus (relay station) and hypothalamus (temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep). Midbrain: connects forebrain to hindbrain, controls eye movements. Hindbrain: cerebellum (balance and coordination — e.g. riding a bicycle), pons, and medulla (controls heartbeat and breathing — injury here puts these most at risk).
In the spinal cord, grey matter (cell bodies, butterfly-shaped inside) and white matter (myelinated axons, outside) can be seen, with dorsal/ventral roots, ganglia and the three neuron types.
A reflex action is a fast, automatic, involuntary response to a stimulus — e.g. withdrawing your hand from something painfully hot. The reflex arc is: receptor → sensory neuron → interneuron (in spinal cord) → motor neuron → effector (muscle). Reflex actions are faster than normal actions because the brain is not involved — the spinal cord decides, so no thinking time is needed. The spinal cord is important in reflex actions precisely because it carries the arc and links sensory input to motor output directly.
Between two neurons is a gap, the synapse. The impulse crosses it with the help of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters, released from the axon ending.
The chemical messengers of the endocrine system are called hormones, carried in blood. Pituitary (master gland): growth hormone, TSH, ACTH, FSH, LH, prolactin. Thyroid: thyroxine (growth and metabolic rate). Parathyroid: parathormone — if missing, calcium levels fall. Pancreas is both exocrine and endocrine: insulin lowers blood sugar, glucagon raises it. Adrenal glands prepare the body for "fight or flight" — adrenaline is the "emergency hormone"; in danger the sympathetic system activates quickly. Ovaries: oestrogen, progesterone. Testes: testosterone.

Ganglia: the swellings on the dorsal roots containing sensory cell bodies.
1. Describe the structure of a neuron and support your answer with a labelled diagram.
A neuron has a cell body containing the nucleus and most cytoplasm; dendrites, short branched fibres that receive impulses and carry them towards the cell body; and a single long axon that carries impulses away to other neurons, muscles or glands. Many axons have a myelin sheath (Schwann cells) with nodes of Ranvier, which speeds conduction; the axon ends in terminals that release neurotransmitters at synapses. (Draw and label: dendrites, cell body/nucleus, axon, myelin sheath, nodes, terminals.)
2. What are the differences and similarities among the three types of neurons?
Differences: sensory neurons carry impulses receptor→CNS and have cell bodies in ganglia outside the CNS; motor neurons carry CNS→effector with cell bodies in the CNS; interneurons lie entirely in the CNS and connect the other two. Similarities: all are neurons with cell body, dendrites and axon; all carry nerve impulses as electrical signals; all use neurotransmitters at synapses; all are part of the same coordination pathway.
3. Write the major functions of the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain.
Forebrain: cerebrum — intelligence, memory, willpower, senses and voluntary actions; thalamus — relays sensory impulses to the cerebrum; hypothalamus — controls body temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep and emotions, and links the nervous and endocrine systems. Midbrain: connects forebrain and hindbrain; controls reflex movements of eyes and ears. Hindbrain: cerebellum — balance, posture, coordination of voluntary movements; pons — relays signals between cerebrum and cerebellum and controls sleep; medulla — controls involuntary actions: heartbeat, breathing, swallowing, blood pressure.
4. What is meant by reflex action? Describe an example of reflex action and identify the reflex arc in this example.
Reflex action is a rapid, automatic response to a stimulus without conscious thought. Example: touching a hot plate — pain receptors in the skin detect heat (receptor) → sensory neuron carries the impulse to the spinal cord → interneuron passes it to a motor neuron → motor neuron carries it to the arm muscle (effector) → the muscle contracts and the hand is withdrawn. The brain learns about it afterwards; the arc is receptor → sensory → interneuron → motor → effector.
5. State the hormones of the pituitary gland and write their functions.
Pituitary (master gland) hormones: Growth hormone (GH) — body growth; Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) — stimulates the thyroid; Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) — stimulates the adrenal cortex; Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) — gamete formation and follicle growth; Luteinizing hormone (LH) — triggers ovulation and sex-hormone release; Prolactin — milk production. The pituitary controls other glands, hence "master gland".
6. Write notes on adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries and testes.
Adrenal glands (on kidneys): medulla releases adrenaline (emergency/fight-or-flight: faster heartbeat, more glucose, dilated pupils); cortex releases corticosteroids for salt balance and stress response. Pancreas: dual gland — exocrine part makes pancreatic juice; endocrine islets release insulin (lowers blood sugar) and glucagon (raises it). Ovaries: oestrogen (female secondary sexual characters, uterus lining) and progesterone (maintains pregnancy/lining). Testes: testosterone (male secondary sexual characters, sperm production).
1. Why is the spinal cord important in reflex actions?
Answer: Because the reflex arc runs through it: sensory impulses reach the spinal cord and are passed via interneurons straight to motor neurons, without waiting for the brain. This shortcut makes reflexes fast and protects the body before conscious thought could act.
2. Why is adrenaline called an "emergency hormone"?
Answer: Adrenaline is released by the adrenal glands in danger/stress and instantly prepares the body for fight or flight: heart beats faster, breathing quickens, blood glucose rises, blood goes to muscles, pupils dilate. It is the body's emergency response chemical.
3. If pancreas releases too much insulin, what happens to blood sugar?
Answer: Blood sugar falls too low (hypoglycaemia): too much glucose is pushed into cells and stored, leaving too little in blood. This causes weakness, shaking, sweating, confusion and, in severe cases, fainting — the opposite of diabetes, where insulin is too low.
4. If the medulla of a patient is injured, which function is most at risk?
Answer: Involuntary vital functions — heartbeat and breathing (and blood pressure, swallowing). The medulla controls these automatically, so its injury is life-threatening even though thinking and movement may be less directly affected.
Coordination begins with the neuron (1), the nervous system's unit: a cell body with a nucleus, dendrites (short branches that receive messages) and a long axon (carries messages away). Many axons are wrapped in a fatty myelin sheath made by Schwann cells, which speeds up impulses. A nerve impulse is an electrical signal travelling across a neuron. There are three types: sensory neurons (receptor → CNS), motor neurons (CNS → effector) and interneurons (connecting sensory and motor neurons inside the CNS). A stimulus is any change in the environment a receptor can detect — light, sound, heat, pain, taste. Brain and spinal cord (2): the central nervous system is the brain + spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system is all the nerves outside it. The brain has three main parts: the forebrain — cerebrum (thinking, memory, senses; damage here affects memory), thalamus (relay station) and hypothalamus (temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep); the midbrain, which connects forebrain to hindbrain and controls eye movements; and the hindbrain — cerebellum (balance and coordination, e.g. riding a bicycle), pons, and medulla (controls heartbeat and breathing, so injury here puts these most at risk). In the spinal cord, grey matter (cell bodies, butterfly-shaped inside) and white matter (myelinated axons, outside) can be seen. Reflex action (3) is a fast, automatic, involuntary response — e.g. withdrawing your hand from something painfully hot. The reflex arc runs receptor → sensory neuron → interneuron (in the spinal cord) → motor neuron → effector (muscle). Reflex actions are faster than normal actions because the brain is not involved — the spinal cord decides, so no thinking time is needed. Between two neurons lies the synapse, a gap the impulse crosses with chemical messengers called neurotransmitters, released from the axon ending. The endocrine system (4) uses hormones, chemical messengers carried in blood. The pituitary (master gland) releases growth hormone, TSH, ACTH, FSH, LH and prolactin. The thyroid releases thyroxine (growth and metabolic rate); the parathyroid releases parathormone — if missing, calcium levels fall. The pancreas is both exocrine and endocrine: insulin lowers blood sugar, glucagon raises it. The adrenal glands prepare the body for "fight or flight" — adrenaline is the "emergency hormone", and in danger the sympathetic system activates quickly. The ovaries release oestrogen and progesterone; the testes release testosterone.
