1. Kinetic Particle Theory — Gas, Liquid and Solidکائنیٹک پارٹیکل تھیوری — گیس، مائع اور ٹھوس
🏷 Tags: kinetic theory, particles, gas, liquid, solid
ENGLISH

According to kinetic particle theory, all matter is made of tiny particles that are always moving. In a gas, particles are far apart, move randomly at high speed in all directions, and have almost no attraction for each other — so a gas has no fixed shape or volume. Gas pressure is caused by particles colliding with the walls of the container.

In a liquid, particles are close together but still move freely, so a liquid has a fixed volume but takes the shape of its container. In a solid, strong forces hold particles in fixed positions; they only vibrate, so a solid has a fixed shape and volume. The average kinetic energy of particles is directly proportional to the temperature on the kelvin scale.

SOLIDLIQUIDGAS
Particles samjho: gas کے ذرات دور دور اور تیز, liquid کے قریب مگر آزاد, solid کے اپنی جگہ جمے ہوئے — اسی لیے gas کی نہ shape fixed ہے نہ volume, liquid کا volume fixed ہے, solid کا دونوں fixed ہیں.
2. Phase Changes and Internal Energyفیز کی تبدیلیاں اور اندرونی توانائی
🏷 Tags: phase change, melting, boiling, sublimation, internal energy
ENGLISH

A substance changes state when its particles gain or lose enough energy to overcome the forces between them. Melting (solid → liquid), boiling (liquid → gas) and sublimation (solid → gas) need heat energy taken in. Freezing (liquid → solid), condensation (gas → liquid) and deposition (gas → solid) give out heat energy.

During a change of state the temperature stays constant even though heating continues: the energy is used to break (or form) attractions between particles, changing the internal energy — the total kinetic + potential energy of the particles — not the temperature. That is why ice melts at a steady 0 °C and water boils at a steady 100 °C at normal pressure.

SOLIDLIQUIDGASmelt →← freezeboil →← condensesublimation ↕ deposition (solid ⇌ gas, direct)
Phase change samjho: جب ذرات اتنی energy پا لیں کے ان کے درمیان کشش ٹوٹ جائے تو حالات بدل جاتی ہے, اور اس دوران temperature ایک جیسا رہتا ہے کیونکی energy internal energy بدلنے میں لگتی ہے.
3. Evaporation vs Boiling, and Pressure Effectsتبخیر بمقابلہ ابلنا، اور دباؤ کا اثر
🏷 Tags: evaporation, boiling, pressure, vapour pressure
ENGLISH

Evaporation happens only at the surface of a liquid and at any temperature: faster particles at the surface escape as gas. Boiling happens throughout the liquid, but only at the boiling point, when bubbles of vapour can form inside the liquid. Evaporation causes cooling, because the fastest (highest-energy) particles leave first.

Increasing the external pressure pushes vapour particles back into the liquid, so a higher temperature is needed to boil — that is why a pressure cooker cooks faster, and why water boils below 100 °C on high mountains where pressure is lower. Evaporation is also faster in wind, heat, and a larger surface area.

EVAPORATION (surface only)surface ↑ ↑ ↑BOILING (whole liquid)bubbles throughout
Evaporation samjho: صرف surface پر, کسی بھی temperature پر ہوتی ہے; boiling پورے liquid میں صرف boiling point پر — اور باہر کا pressure بڑھے تو boiling point بھی بڑھ جاتا ہے.
4. Heating and Cooling Curvesحرارتی اور ٹھنڈک کے منحنی خطوط
🏷 Tags: heating curve, cooling curve, melting point, boiling point
ENGLISH

A heating curve plots temperature against time while a substance is heated steadily. It rises while the solid warms, then goes flat at the melting point while the solid melts, rises again while the liquid warms, and goes flat again at the boiling point while the liquid boils. The flat parts are the changes of state, where energy changes internal energy, not temperature.

A cooling curve is the mirror image: temperature falls, then stays flat at the freezing point and at the condensation point while the substance changes state. Reading these curves lets you find the melting and boiling points of an unknown substance from its graph alone.

TempTime →meltingboiling
Heating curve samjho: curve کے chapte حصے ہی melting اور boiling بتاتے ہیں — وہاں temperature رک جاتا ہے جبکہ حالات بدل رہی ہوتی ہے; cooling curve اس کی الٹ تصویر ہے.
5. Gas Laws and Diffusionگیسوں کے قوانین اور انتشار
🏷 Tags: Boyle, Charles, Avogadro, diffusion
ENGLISH

Three gas laws describe a fixed amount of gas. Boyle's law: at constant temperature, pressure × volume = constant (P₁V₁ = P₂V₂) — squeezing a gas raises its pressure. Charles's law: at constant pressure, volume ÷ temperature (kelvin) = constant — heating a gas expands it. Avogadro's law: at the same temperature and pressure, equal volumes of gases contain equal numbers of particles.

Diffusion is the spreading of particles from high to low concentration, explained by random particle motion. Light particles diffuse faster than heavy ones, and diffusion is faster at higher temperature. In the body, diffusion lets oxygen pass into blood and medicines spread from where they are taken — the rate matters for how quickly a medicine acts.

P ↑, V ↓ (Boyle)DIFFUSION→ → →high → low concentration
Gas laws samjho: Boyle کہتا ہے pressure بڑھے تو volume گھٹے, Charles کہتا ہے گرم کرو تو gas پھیلتی ہے, اور diffusion ہمیشہ زیادہ concentration سے کم کی طرف ہوتی ہے — ہلکی gas تیز.

Section B: Short Answer Questionsحصہ ب: مختصر جوابات

1. 14.1 From where does the energy come when a liquid evaporates?

Answer / جواب

Answer: From the liquid itself and its surroundings: escaping surface particles take kinetic energy with them, which is why evaporation cools the remaining liquid. جواب: مائع اور اردگرد سے؛ نکلنے والے ذرات حرکی توانائی ساتھ لے جاتے ہیں، اس لیے مائع ٹھنڈا ہوتا ہے۔

2. 14.2 Is condensation an endothermic process?

Answer / جواب

Answer: No, condensation is exothermic — gas particles lose kinetic energy and give out heat as attractions form between them to make a liquid. جواب: نہیں، تکثیف ایکزوتھرمک ہے — گیس حرارت خارج کر کے مائع بنتی ہے۔

3. 14.3 Why naphthalene balls (used to repel insects) disappear after sometime?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Naphthalene sublimes — its solid particles escape directly as vapour at room temperature, so the balls slowly shrink and disappear without melting. جواب: نیفتھلین تصعید کرتی ہے — ٹھوس براہ راست بخارات بن کر غائب ہو جاتی ہے۔

4. 14.4 Why does the temperature remain constant during a phase change?

Answer / جواب

Answer: The heat supplied is used to overcome (or form) forces between particles — changing internal energy — not to raise kinetic energy, so temperature does not change until the change of state is complete. جواب: دی گئی حرارت ذرات کے درمیان قوتوں کو توڑنے یا بنانے میں استعمال ہوتی ہے، درجہ حرارت بڑھانے میں نہیں۔

5. 14.5 Is it possible to compress a liquid like a gas?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Practically no — liquid particles are already close together with very little space between them, so liquids are almost incompressible, unlike gases whose particles are far apart. جواب: عملی طور پر نہیں — مائع کے ذرات پہلے سے قریب ہوتے ہیں، اس لیے مائع تقریباً ناقابل دباؤ ہے۔

6. 14.6 Can you change the temperature at which water boils in an experiment in your lab?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Yes — by changing the external pressure: boil water in a closed vessel under higher pressure and it boils above 100 °C; under reduced pressure (vacuum) it boils below 100 °C. جواب: جی ہاں — بیرونی دباؤ بدل کر: زیادہ دباؤ پر پانی 100 °C سے اوپر اور کم دباؤ پر 100 °C سے نیچے ابلتا ہے۔

7. 14.7 In which season the wet clothes get dry after a relatively longer time?

Answer / جواب

Answer: In winter (and in humid/rainy weather) — low temperature slows evaporation and humid air is already near saturation, so clothes take longer to dry. جواب: سردیوں میں (اور مرطوب موسم میں) — کم درجہ حرارت اور نمی والی ہوا سے تبخیر سست ہوتی ہے۔

8. 14.8 When a solid is heated, what happens to its particles which are vibrating?

Answer / جواب

Answer: They vibrate faster and with larger amplitude as their kinetic energy rises, until the vibrations are strong enough to break the fixed arrangement and the solid melts. جواب: وہ تیزی سے اور زیادہ فاصلے تک ارتعاش کرتے ہیں، یہاں تک کہ مقررہ ترتیب ٹوٹ جاتی ہے اور ٹھوس پگھل جاتا ہے۔

9. 14.9 Do solids and liquids also diffuse just like gases?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Yes, but far more slowly — their particles are close together and strongly attracted, so they move past each other only slowly (e.g. a drop of ink spreading in water, or two metals slowly diffusing into each other). جواب: جی ہاں، مگر بہت آہستہ — ان کے ذرات قریب اور مضبوط کشش میں ہوتے ہیں، اس لیے انتشار سست ہوتا ہے۔

10. 14.10 Why dew is formed in the early hours of the morning?

Answer / جواب

Answer: At night surfaces cool, and in the early morning the air near the cold ground cools below its dew point, so water vapour condenses into tiny droplets (dew) on leaves and grass. جواب: رات کو سطحیں ٹھنڈی ہوتی ہیں اور صبح سویرے ہوا ڈیو پوائنٹ سے نیچے ٹھنڈی ہو کر پانی کے قطروں (شبنم) میں بدل جاتی ہے۔

Section C: Constructed Response Questionsحصہ ج: تعمیری جوابات

1. 14.1 Differentiate between evaporation and boiling.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Evaporation: only at the surface, at any temperature, slow, and causes cooling. Boiling: throughout the liquid, only at the boiling point, fast, with bubbles forming inside the liquid. جواب: تبخیر صرف سطح پر اور کسی بھی درجہ حرارت پر ہوتی ہے؛ ابلنا پورے مائع میں اور صرف نقطہ ابل پر ہوتا ہے۔

2. 14.2 Describe how boiling is related to the external pressure?

Answer / جواب

Answer: A liquid boils when its vapour pressure equals the external pressure. If external pressure rises, a higher temperature is needed to reach that vapour pressure, so the boiling point rises; if external pressure falls (e.g. on mountains), the boiling point falls. جواب: مائع تب ابلتا ہے جب اس کا بخاری دباؤ بیرونی دباؤ کے برابر ہو جائے؛ بیرونی دباؤ بڑھے تو نقطہ ابل بڑھتا ہے، گھٹے تو نقطہ ابل گھٹتا ہے۔

3. 14.3 Why the process of evaporation does not need the input of energy?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Evaporation takes its energy from the liquid itself and its surroundings, not from a heater: the fastest surface particles already have enough kinetic energy to escape, and the energy they carry away cools the remaining liquid. So no external heating is supplied, though energy is still used. جواب: تبخیر کی توانائی مائع اور اردگرد سے ملتی ہے؛ تیز ترین سطحی ذرات خود بخارات بن جاتے ہیں، اس لیے باہر سے گرم کرنا ضروری نہیں۔

4. 14.4 Why the heating and cooling curves for the phase changes adopt the same path?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Heating and cooling are reverse processes passing through the same states at the same temperatures: melting point on heating equals freezing point on cooling, and boiling point equals condensation point. The energy absorbed in a change of state is released again in the reverse change, so both curves show flat parts at the same temperatures. جواب: گرم کرنا اور ٹھنڈا کرنا الٹے عمل ہیں جو ایک ہی درجہ حرارتوں سے گزرتے ہیں؛ نقطہ پگھلاؤ = نقطہ انجماد اور نقطہ ابل = نقطہ تکثیف۔

5. 14.5 Why ice melts when the pressure is exerted on it?

Answer / جواب

Answer: For water, unusually, the solid (ice) takes up more volume than the liquid. Increasing pressure favours the smaller-volume state, so pressure on ice lowers its melting point and it melts; when pressure is removed it refreezes. This is why ice skates glide on a thin water layer. جواب: برف پانی سے زیادہ جگہ لیتی ہے؛ دباؤ سے کم حجم والی حالت (مائع پانی) کو فائدہ ہوتا ہے، اس لیے نقطہ پگھلاؤ گھٹتا ہے اور برف پگھلتی ہے۔

6. 14.6 Why do phase changes occur?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Phase changes occur when particles gain or lose enough energy to change the balance between their kinetic energy and the forces of attraction between them: gaining energy weakens the hold of attractions (solid → liquid → gas), losing energy lets attractions pull particles together (gas → liquid → solid). جواب: جب ذرات کی حرکی توانائی اور ان کے درمیان کشش کا توازن بدلتا ہے تو حالت بدلتی ہے: توانائی ملنے سے کشش کمزور ہوتی ہے، توانائی کھونے سے کشش ذرات کو جوڑ لیتی ہے۔

Section D: Descriptive / Numerical Questionsحصہ د: تفصیلی / عددی سوالات

1. 14.1 Explain the difference in the rates of diffusion of two gases based on kinetic theory.

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): Kinetic theory says gas particles move randomly and continuously. Light particles move faster at the same temperature (same average kinetic energy, so smaller mass means higher speed), so they cover distance sooner and diffuse faster. Heavy particles move slowly and diffuse slowly. So the rate of diffusion is higher for the lighter gas and lower for the heavier gas; e.g. ammonia (NH₃, Mr 17) diffuses faster than hydrogen chloride (HCl, Mr 36.5). جواب: ایک ہی درجہ حرارت پر ہلکے گیس کے ذرات تیز حرکت کرتے ہیں اس لیے تیزی سے پھیلتے ہیں، بھاری گیس کے ذرات آہستہ حرکت کرتے ہیں اس لیے آہستہ پھیلتے ہیں۔

2. 14.2 How does the process of sublimation helpful in printing and in the usage of air freshener?

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): In dye-sublimation printing, solid dye is heated so it turns directly into vapour, which penetrates the paper/fabric and then deposits as solid colour — giving sharp, long-lasting prints without liquid ink spreading. Solid air fresheners work the same way: the solid slowly sublimes into fragrant vapour that spreads through the room by diffusion, with no liquid to spill. جواب: ڈائی سبلیمیشن پرنٹنگ میں ٹھوس رنگ براہ راست بخارات بن کر کاغذ میں جذب ہوتا ہے اور پھر ٹھوس رنگ بن جاتا ہے؛ ٹھوس ایئر فریشنر آہستہ آہستہ بخارات بن کر خوشبو پھیلاتا ہے۔

3. 14.3 Draw heating curve for the physical changes that water undergoes with change in temperature.

Answer / جواب

Answer (how to draw): Draw temperature (y-axis) against time (x-axis) with steady heating. The curve rises from below 0 °C (ice warming), goes flat at 0 °C (ice melting), rises again to 100 °C (water warming), then goes flat at 100 °C (water boiling), and rises again for steam. The two flat parts are the changes of state, where temperature stays constant while internal energy changes. جواب: درجہ حرارت بمقابلہ وقت کا گراف بنائیں: 0 °C پر چپٹا حصہ (برف پگھلنا)، پھر اوپر 100 °C تک، پھر چپٹا حصہ (پانی ابلنا)۔
