A mole is the chemist's counting unit: 1 mole of anything contains 6.02 × 10²³ particles (Avogadro's number). The mass of 1 mole is its molar mass in grams — for example 1 mole of water (H₂O) weighs 18 g, and 1 mole of carbon weighs 12 g. Moles let us count atoms and molecules by weighing them.
Key conversions: moles = mass ÷ molar mass; number of particles = moles × 6.02 × 10²³; and at standard conditions 1 mole of any gas occupies a fixed volume. Always convert masses to moles first — chemical equations work in moles, not grams.
The empirical formula is the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms in a compound, found from percentage composition: divide each percentage by the atom's relative atomic mass, then divide all results by the smallest to get the ratio. The molecular formula is the actual number of atoms in one molecule.
Example: a compound with empirical formula CH₂ and molar mass 28 g/mol has molecular formula C₂H₄, because CH₂ weighs 14 and 28 ÷ 14 = 2. Two compounds can share an empirical formula but have different molecular formulas — and different properties.
A balanced equation obeys the law of conservation of mass: the same number of each atom appears on both sides. Its coefficients are the mole ratio of the reaction. For 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O, 2 moles of hydrogen react with 1 mole of oxygen to give 2 moles of water — whatever the scale.
To solve a mass problem: (1) write the balanced equation, (2) convert the given mass to moles, (3) use the mole ratio to find moles of the wanted substance, (4) convert back to mass. Never skip balancing — an unbalanced equation gives a wrong ratio and a wrong answer.
When reactants are not in the exact mole ratio, one runs out first: the limiting reactant. It decides the maximum amount of product (the theoretical yield). The other reactant is in excess and some of it is left over. To find it, divide each reactant's moles by its coefficient — the smaller result is the limiting reactant.
Real reactions rarely give the full theoretical yield: some product is lost in filtering, side reactions occur, or the reaction is reversible. Percentage yield = (actual yield ÷ theoretical yield) × 100. A high percentage yield means an efficient process — important in industry, where wasted reactants cost money.
The concentration of a solution is usually given as molarity: moles of solute per litre (dm³) of solution, mol/dm³. So a 2 mol/dm³ solution of NaCl contains 2 moles of NaCl in every litre. Moles in a solution = concentration × volume (in dm³) — remember to convert cm³ to dm³ by dividing by 1000.
Concentration calculations also solve titration-style problems: from the volume and concentration of one solution and the balanced equation, you can find the concentration of another. Diluting a solution (adding water) lowers its concentration but does not change the moles of solute present.
Molar volume at room temperature and pressure (RTP) is a fixed shortcut: 1 mol of any gas occupies 24 dm³ at RTP. So moles of gas = volume ÷ 24, and volume = moles × 24. Example: 360 dm³ of a gas at RTP = 360 ÷ 24 = 15 mol — exactly the calculation behind exercise MCQ 15.1. This works for any gas because gas particles are far apart, so the identity of the gas does not matter.
Percentage purity tells how much of a sample is the wanted substance: % purity = (mass of pure substance ÷ total mass of sample) × 100. A sample may be impure because of unreacted starting material or by-products. Example: if 0.217 g of an impure sample contains 0.198 g of the pure substance, its purity = (0.198 ÷ 0.217) × 100 = 91.2% — the figure in exercise MCQ 15.8 (gold purity).
This chapter is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for Class 10 Chemistry. No official Class 10 Chemistry book was on disk for this build, so no book page numbers are claimed. The exercise questions and answers below are the library chapter's own; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.
1. Volume occupied by 15 moles of ammonia gas at RTP:
Answer: (c) 360 dm³ — 15 × 24 dm³/mol (molar volume at RTP) = 360 dm³. جواب: (c) 360 dm³۔
2. How many moles of natural gas CH₄ will be present in a cylinder if its volume is 18 dm³ at RTP?
Answer: (a) 0.75 mol — 18 ÷ 24 = 0.75. جواب: (a) 0.75 مول۔
3. What will the molar concentration of potassium hydroxide solution if 2.0 g of it are dissolved in 100 cm³ of solution?
Answer: (a) 0.36 mol/dm³ — moles KOH = 2.0 ÷ 56 = 0.0357 in 0.10 dm³ → 0.357 ≈ 0.36 mol/dm³. جواب: (a) 0.36 mol/dm³۔
4. What will be the mass of NaCl needed to make up 15 dm³ of its solution with a concentration of 0.7 g/dm³?
Answer: (b) 10.5 g — 15 × 0.7 = 10.5 g. جواب: (b) 10.5 گرام۔
5. Find out the concentration of H₂SO₄ in mol/dm³ if its 10 cm³ react with 20 cm³ of NaOH solution having concentration 0.1 mol/dm³.
Answer: (c) 0.1 mol/dm³ — moles NaOH = 0.1 × 0.020 = 0.002; reaction needs 2 NaOH per H₂SO₄, so moles H₂SO₄ = 0.001 in 0.010 dm³ = 0.1 mol/dm³. جواب: (c) 0.1 mol/dm³۔
6. If the molar mass of a compound is 178 g/mol and its empirical formula is C₃H₅O₃. What is its molecular formula?
Answer: (b) C₆H₁₀O₆ — empirical mass = 36 + 5 + 48 = 89; 178 ÷ 89 = 2, so double the empirical formula. جواب: (b) C₆H₁₀O₆۔
7. When natural gas burns in air, which component is the limiting reactant?
Answer: (d) Natural gas — in open air, oxygen is supplied without limit, so the fuel runs out first.
8. If the actual yield of a compound is 0.198 g while the theoretical yield is 0.217 g. What will be the percentage yield?
Answer: (b) 91.2% — (0.198 ÷ 0.217) × 100 = 91.2%. جواب: (b) 91.2 فیصد۔
1. 15.1 What is the molar volume of a gas at RTP?
Answer: 24 dm³ per mole (at room temperature and pressure, 25 °C and 1 atm) — one mole of any gas occupies 24 dm³.
2. 15.2 How does the concept of molar volume useful for us?
Answer: It lets us convert between gas volume and moles without weighing: moles = volume ÷ 24 dm³/mol at RTP, which makes gas calculations (and finding molar masses) quick.
3. 15.3 How does the molar volume relate to the Avogadro's law?
Answer: Avogadro's law says equal volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of particles; since one mole always contains the same number of particles, one mole of any gas occupies the same volume (24 dm³ at RTP) — that volume is the molar volume.
4. 15.4 Why two different compounds may show the same empirical formula?
Answer: Because the empirical formula shows only the simplest ratio, not the actual numbers: e.g. ethyne (C₂H₂) and benzene (C₆H₆) both reduce to CH, yet they are different compounds with different molecular formulae and properties.
5. 15.5 Why is percentage yield important?
Answer: It measures how efficient a reaction is: a high percentage yield means less wasted reactant, lower cost and less waste — essential for economical, large-scale production.
6. 15.6 What is the concentration of a solution in mol/dm³ if it contains 49 g of H₂SO₄ in one dm³ of solution?
Answer: Moles = 49 ÷ 98 = 0.5 mol in 1 dm³, so concentration = 0.5 mol/dm³. جواب: 0.5 mol/dm³۔
1. 15.1 How would you identify the limiting reactant in a chemical reaction?
Answer: Convert each reactant's mass to moles, divide each by its coefficient in the balanced equation, and compare: the reactant with the smallest value runs out first — it is the limiting reactant.
2. 15.2 Why is it important to find the purity of a compound which is used as a medicine?
Answer: Because the dose depends on the amount of active compound: impurities make the dose wrong (too weak to work, or an impurity may itself be harmful), so purity decides safety and effectiveness.
3. 15.3 Will there be a limiting reactant in a reversible reaction?
Answer: Not in the usual sense: a reversible reaction reaches equilibrium before any reactant is fully used up, so both reactants remain at equilibrium. The reactant present in the smaller proportion still limits how far the equilibrium position lies towards products.
4. 15.4 How do you know if a formula is empirical or not?
Answer: If the subscripts have no common divisor greater than 1, the formula is already in its simplest ratio and is empirical; if they share a factor, divide by it to get the empirical formula.
5. 15.5 Write down one method to find out the molecular mass of a compound without knowing its molecular formula.
Answer: Mass spectrometry gives the molecular mass directly from the molecular ion peak; for a gas, weighing a known volume at RTP and using the molar volume (24 dm³/mol) gives moles and hence molar mass.
1. 15.1 Calculate the number of moles, volume and number of molecules in 4.0 g of CH₄ at RTP.
Answer: Moles = 4.0 ÷ 16 = 0.25 mol. Volume at RTP = 0.25 × 24 = 6.0 dm³. Molecules = 0.25 × 6.02 × 10²³ = 1.51 × 10²³.
2. 15.2 What mass of NaCl need to be dissolved in 150 cm³ of a solution if the concentration of the solution is 0.4 mol/dm³?
Answer: Volume = 0.15 dm³. Moles = 0.4 × 0.15 = 0.06 mol. Mass = 0.06 × 58.5 = 3.51 g. جواب: 3.51 گرام NaCl۔
3. 15.3 Find out the percentage of sodium in NaHCO₃.
Answer: Mr(NaHCO₃) = 23 + 1 + 12 + 48 = 84. % Na = (23 ÷ 84) × 100 = 27.4%.
4. 15.4 A sulphide of iron contains 1.926 g of sulphur and 2.333 g of iron. Find out the empirical formula of this compound.
Answer: Moles S = 1.926 ÷ 32 = 0.0602; moles Fe = 2.333 ÷ 56 = 0.0417. Ratio Fe : S = 1 : 1.44 ≈ 1 : 1.5 (allowing for experimental error), so the empirical formula is Fe₂S₃.
5. 15.5 A compound contains by mass, 40.0% C, 6.71% H and 53.3% oxygen. A 0.320 mole of this compound weighs 28.8 g. What is the molecular formula of this compound?
Answer: Moles ratio: C 40.0÷12 = 3.33, H 6.71÷1 = 6.71, O 53.3÷16 = 3.33 → 1:2:1, empirical formula CH₂O (mass 30). Molar mass = 28.8 ÷ 0.320 = 90 g/mol; 90 ÷ 30 = 3, so molecular formula = C₃H₆O₃.
6. 15.6 The formation of ammonia gas is given by: 3H₂ + N₂ → 2NH₃. If you start reacting 12 g of H₂ with 64 g of N₂, which will be the limiting reactant?
Answer: Moles H₂ = 12 ÷ 2 = 6 mol; moles N₂ = 64 ÷ 28 = 2.29 mol. Divide by coefficients: H₂ 6÷3 = 2.0, N₂ 2.29÷1 = 2.29. The smaller value is H₂, so hydrogen is the limiting reactant.
7. 15.7 When 305 g of AgNO₃ is reacted with excess of MgCl₂ it produces 23.7 g of Mg(NO₃)₂. What is the percentage yield of the reaction? 2AgNO₃ + MgCl₂ → Mg(NO₃)₂ + 2AgCl.
Answer: Moles AgNO₃ = 305 ÷ 170 = 1.79 mol → theoretical moles Mg(NO₃)₂ = 0.897 mol → theoretical mass = 0.897 × 148 = 133 g. Percentage yield = (23.7 ÷ 133) × 100 = 17.8% (using the figures as printed in the book).
8. 15.8 A sample of metal has a total mass of 3.66 kg and contains 2.45 kg of gold. What is the percentage purity of gold in this sample?
Answer: Percentage purity = (2.45 ÷ 3.66) × 100 = 66.9%.
