Reaction kinetics is the study of how fast reactions happen. The rate of a reaction is the change in concentration (or amount) of a reactant or product per unit time — for example, how quickly a gas is produced or a solid disappears. Rates are fastest at the start, when reactant concentrations are highest, and slow down as reactants are used up.
Rates can be measured by following a visible change: volume of gas collected in a syringe, mass lost as gas escapes, colour change, or the time for a precipitate to hide a cross on paper. A rate graph (concentration vs time) is steepest at the start and flattens as the reaction finishes.
Collision theory says a reaction happens only when reactant particles collide. But not every collision works: the colliding particles must have at least the activation energy — the minimum energy needed to break old bonds and start the reaction — and they must collide in the right orientation.
Most collisions fail because the energy is too low or the orientation is wrong, so particles just bounce apart. Anything that increases the number of successful collisions per second increases the rate: more particles, faster particles, or a lower activation energy.
Concentration: more particles in the same volume means more frequent collisions, so a faster rate. Temperature: hotter particles move faster and more of them have energy above the activation energy, so collisions are more frequent and more successful — a small temperature rise gives a big rate rise.
Surface area: a powdered solid reacts faster than a lump because more of it is exposed to the other reactant. Pressure (for gases) works like concentration — squeezing gas particles together raises collision frequency. Light provides energy for photochemical reactions, like photosynthesis and the reaction of hydrogen with chlorine.
A catalyst speeds up a reaction by providing an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy, so more colliding particles have enough energy to react. The catalyst itself is not used up — it is regenerated at the end and can be used again. It does not change the products or the amount of product, only how fast it forms.
Examples: manganese(IV) oxide catalyses the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide; iron is the catalyst in the Haber process; platinum/rhodium in a car's catalytic converter turn harmful exhaust gases into harmless ones. In living things, enzymes are biological catalysts — they work at body temperature and are specific to one reaction.
We slow unwanted reactions every day: food is kept in a fridge because low temperature slows the reactions that spoil it; airtight packing and preservatives slow oxidation. Cooking raises temperature to speed up useful reactions — and a pressure cooker raises both temperature and pressure to cook faster.
In industry, rate matters for profit and safety: catalysts let reactions run at lower temperatures (saving fuel), but a reaction that runs too fast can overheat and become dangerous. Chemists balance rate against cost and safety — fast enough to be economical, controlled enough to be safe.
Picture a reaction as an energy hill: reactants must climb to the top — the activated state (the highest-energy, unstable arrangement) — before they can roll down to products. Only collisions that reach this top, with enough energy (≥ activation energy) and the right orientation, react. A catalyst does not change the start or end heights; it opens a lower pass over the hill, so more collisions succeed — the idea behind exercise MCQ 17.3.
Stopping a reaction is the reverse of speeding it up: cool the mixture (fewer particles reach the activation energy), dilute or remove a reactant (fewer collisions), or remove the catalyst (the low pass closes). This is why food is refrigerated, why fires are starved of fuel or oxygen, and why industrial reactions are quenched by cooling — rate control matters as much in stopping reactions as in starting them.

The exercise questions and answers below are the library chapter's own; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.
اس chapter کی exercise میں 5 MCQs, 10 short, 6 constructed-response اور 5 descriptive سوال ہیں — تمام سوال library chapter کے ہیں, جواب کے ساتھ. کوئی سوال invent نہیں کیا گیا.
1. The number of collisions per unit volume of the reaction mixture is called:
Answer: (c) Collision frequency — collisions per unit volume per unit time. جواب: (c) کولیشن فریکوئنسی۔
2. If the reactants possess an energy higher than the activation energy, then the reaction will be:
Answer: (b) Fast — more particles can overcome the energy barrier, so more collisions succeed. جواب: (b) تیز۔
3. Which of the following explains the increase in rate of reaction in the presence of a catalyst?
Answer: (b) — the catalyst's alternative pathway has lower activation energy. جواب: (b) کیٹالسٹ کم ایکٹیویشن انرجی والا متبادل راستہ دیتا ہے۔
4. Which of the following statements is correct?
Answer: (a) — only sufficiently energetic collisions (with right orientation) succeed. جواب: (a) صرف ایکٹیویشن انرجی کے برابر یا زیادہ توانائی والے تصادم ری ایکشن دیتے ہیں۔
5. When a reaction proceeds ahead, how the concentrations of reactants and products change?
Answer: (b) — reactants are used up while products form. جواب: (b) ری ایکٹنٹس گھٹتے ہیں اور پروڈکٹس بڑھتے ہیں۔
1. 17.1 What is a successful collision?
Answer: A collision between reactant particles that has energy ≥ activation energy and the right orientation, so it leads to products. جواب: وہ تصادم جس میں توانائی ایکٹیویشن انرجی کے برابر یا زیادہ ہو اور سمت درست ہو، جس سے پروڈکٹس بنیں۔
2. 17.2 How does increase in the temperature increase the rate of a reaction?
Answer: Particles move faster (more frequent collisions) and a much larger fraction has energy above the activation energy, so more collisions are successful. جواب: ذرات تیز حرکت کرتے ہیں اور زیادہ ذرات میں ایکٹیویشن انرجی سے زیادہ توانائی ہوتی ہے، اس لیے کامیاب تصادم بڑھتے ہیں۔
3. 17.3 Define activation energy.
Answer: The minimum energy that colliding reactant particles must have for a collision to lead to reaction (to break old bonds and reach the activated state). جواب: وہ کم سے کم توانائی جو ٹکرانے والے ذرات میں ری ایکشن کے لیے ہونی چاہیے۔
4. 17.4 Why does the burning of sulphur proceed slower in air than in pure oxygen?
Answer: Air is only about 21% oxygen, so oxygen particles collide with sulphur less frequently than in pure oxygen, where the concentration of oxygen is much higher. جواب: ہوا میں صرف تقریباً 21 فیصد آکسیجن ہوتی ہے، اس لیے خالص آکسیجن کے مقابلے میں تصادم کم بار ہوتے ہیں۔
5. 17.5 Why a catalyst used in a reaction is preferably taken in the powdered form?
Answer: Powder has a much larger surface area, giving more active sites for reactant particles to adsorb and react, so the catalytic effect is stronger. جواب: پاؤڈر کا سطحی رقبہ بہت زیادہ ہوتا ہے، اس لیے زیادہ ایکٹو سائٹس ملتی ہیں اور کیٹالیٹک اثر مضبوط ہوتا ہے۔
6. 17.6 Why is the rate of a reaction often very fast at the beginning of the reaction?
Answer: At the start, reactant concentrations are highest, so collisions are most frequent; as reactants are used up, concentration and collision frequency fall and the rate slows. جواب: شروع میں ری ایکٹنٹس کی ارتکاز سب سے زیادہ ہوتی ہے، اس لیے تصادم سب سے زیادہ بار ہوتے ہیں۔
7. 17.7 Magnesium does not react with air at room temperature but it reacts very fast at high temperature giving intense white light. Explain.
Answer: At room temperature too few Mg/oxygen collisions have energy above the activation energy, so no visible reaction occurs; at high temperature many more particles exceed the activation energy, the reaction runs fast and releases intense light and heat. جواب: کمرے کے درجہ حرارت پر بہت کم ذرات میں ایکٹیویشن انرجی سے زیادہ توانائی ہوتی ہے؛ زیادہ درجہ حرارت پر ری ایکشن تیز ہو کر شدید سفید روشنی دیتا ہے۔
8. 17.8 What happens to the reactants after they climb the energy hill during a reaction?
Answer: Having reached the activated state (top of the energy hill), the old bonds break fully and new bonds form, so the particles fall down the other side as products, releasing or absorbing the energy difference. جواب: توانائی کی پہاڑی (ایکٹیویٹڈ حالت) پر پہنچ کر پرانے بانڈ مکمل ٹوٹتے ہیں اور نئے بانڈ بنتے ہیں، جس سے پروڈکٹس بنتے ہیں۔
9. 17.9 How does a catalyst lower the activation energy of a reaction?
Answer: By providing an alternative reaction pathway (e.g. adsorption on its surface) whose highest energy point is lower, so more colliding particles have enough energy to react. جواب: متبادل راستہ دے کر جس کی توانائی کی چوٹی کم ہوتی ہے، اس لیے زیادہ ذرات ری ایکٹ کر سکتے ہیں۔
10. 17.10 Give any two features of the catalytic action of an enzyme.
Answer: (1) Specificity — each enzyme acts on only one substrate (or type). (2) It works under mild conditions (body temperature, near-neutral pH) and is not used up. جواب: (1) مخصوصیت — ہر انزائم صرف ایک سبسٹریٹ پر کام کرتا ہے۔ (2) ہلکے حالات (جسمانی درجہ حرارت) میں کام کرتا ہے اور ختم نہیں ہوتا۔
1. 17.1 In what different ways you can increase the successful collisions between the particles of the reactants?
Answer: Increase concentration, raise temperature, increase surface area (powder the solid), increase pressure (for gases), and add a catalyst (lowers activation energy so more collisions succeed). جواب: ارتکاز بڑھائیں، درجہ حرارت بڑھائیں، سطحی رقبہ بڑھائیں، گیسوں کا دباؤ بڑھائیں، یا کیٹالسٹ شامل کریں۔
2. 17.2 Give an example of a reaction which proceeds with the gain in mass.
Answer: Burning magnesium in air: 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO — the solid product weighs more than the magnesium taken, because oxygen from the air joins it. Rusting of iron is another example. جواب: میگنیشیم کا ہوا میں جلنا (2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO) — ہوا کی آکسیجن ملنے سے ماس بڑھتا ہے۔
3. 17.3 From where do molecules get energy to attain higher energy state?
Answer: From heat (thermal energy) supplied to the reaction and from the kinetic energy of their collisions — hotter particles collide harder, and some gain enough energy to reach the activated state. جواب: دی گئی حرارت اور تصادموں کی حرکی توانائی سے — گرم ذرات زور سے ٹکراتے ہیں اور کچھ ایکٹیویٹڈ حالت تک پہنچ جاتے ہیں۔
4. 17.4 How does the presence of V₂O₅ catalyst lower the activation energy of the following reaction? 2SO₂ + O₂ → 2SO₃.
Answer: V₂O₅ provides a surface where SO₂ and O₂ molecules adsorb, react by an alternative pathway with lower activation energy, and desorb as SO₃; the catalyst is regenerated and not used up, so the reaction is much faster at the same temperature. جواب: V₂O₅ سطح دیتا ہے جہاں SO₂ اور O₂ کم ایکٹیویشن انرجی والے متبادل راستے سے ری ایکٹ کرتے ہیں؛ کیٹالسٹ دوبارہ بن جاتا ہے۔
5. 17.6 Explain the catalytic action of an enzyme.
Answer: An enzyme's active site fits its substrate (lock-and-key); the substrate binds, the reaction proceeds by a lower-activation-energy pathway, products leave, and the enzyme is unchanged and ready again. Enzymes are specific, work at mild temperature/pH, and are denatured by heat or extreme pH. جواب: انزائم کا ایکٹو سائٹ سبسٹریٹ سے ملتا ہے، کم ایکٹیویشن انرجی والا راستہ دیتا ہے، پروڈکٹس چھوڑتا ہے اور انزائم بغیر تبدیلی کے دوبارہ تیار ہوتا ہے۔
6. 17.7 If you desire to stop a reaction going on at 60 °C, what action you will take?
Answer: Cool the mixture (lowering temperature cuts successful collisions sharply), remove or dilute a reactant, or remove the catalyst / add an inhibitor — any of these slows or stops the reaction. جواب: آمیزے کو ٹھنڈا کریں، کسی ری ایکٹنٹ کو ہٹائیں یا پتلا کریں، یا کیٹالسٹ ہٹائیں — ان میں سے کوئی بھی ری ایکشن روک دے گا۔
1. 17.1 Explain the effect of surface area on the rate of a reaction.
Answer (model points): A larger surface area exposes more reactant particles to the other reactant, so collisions are more frequent and the rate rises. Example: powdered calcium carbonate reacts with acid much faster than a lump of the same mass, because only the surface particles can react. جواب: بڑی سطح سے زیادہ ذرات دوسرے ری ایکٹنٹ کے سامنے آتے ہیں، تصادم زیادہ ہوتے ہیں اور رفتار بڑھتی ہے۔
2. 17.2 Describe the main points of the collision theory of reaction rate.
Answer (model points): (1) Particles must collide to react. (2) Only collisions with energy ≥ activation energy can lead to reaction. (3) Collisions must have the right orientation. (4) Rate depends on the frequency of successful collisions — raised by concentration, temperature, surface area, pressure (gases) and catalysts. جواب: ذرات کا ٹکرانا ضروری ہے، توانائی ایکٹیویشن انرجی کے برابر یا زیادہ ہو، سمت درست ہو، اور رفتار کامیاب تصادموں کی تعدد پر منحصر ہے۔
3. 17.3 Discuss the following factors affecting the rate of a reaction: (a) Effect of concentrations of the reactants. (b) Effect of temperature at which a reaction is carried out.
Answer (model points): (a) Higher concentration means more particles per unit volume, more frequent collisions, faster rate. (b) Higher temperature means particles move faster (more collisions) and a larger fraction has energy above the activation energy (more successful collisions) — so the rate rises sharply. جواب: زیادہ ارتکاز سے تصادم زیادہ بار ہوتے ہیں؛ زیادہ درجہ حرارت سے ذرات تیز ہوتے ہیں اور زیادہ ذرات میں ایکٹیویشن انرجی سے زیادہ توانائی ہوتی ہے۔
4. 17.4 How does chemical kinetics play an important role in the food industry?
Answer (model points): Kinetics controls spoilage and processing: refrigeration and freezing slow the reactions (enzymatic and bacterial) that spoil food; preservatives and airtight packing slow oxidation; pasteurisation uses heat to kill microbes quickly; and fermentation rates are controlled to make bread, yoghurt and cheese. جواب: فرج اور پریزرویٹوز خراب کرنے والے ری ایکشنز سست کرتے ہیں، پیسچرائزیشن جراثیم مارتی ہے، اور فرمنٹیشن کی رفتار قابو کر کے روٹی، دہی اور پنیر بنائے جاتے ہیں۔
5. 17.5 Write briefly about the role enzymes play in our body as biological catalysts.
Answer (model points): Enzymes speed up body reactions at 37 °C that would otherwise be far too slow: amylase digests starch, proteases digest proteins, lipases digest fats, and enzymes build DNA, release energy from glucose and remove waste — each specific to its substrate and working without being used up. جواب: انزائمز جسم کے ری ایکشنز 37 °C پر تیز کرتے ہیں: امائلیز نشاستہ، پروٹیز پروٹین اور لائپیز چکنائی ہضم کرتے ہیں۔
