Nitrogen makes up about 78% of the air but is very unreactive because its molecules (N₂) are held by a strong triple bond. It is used to fill food packets (to prevent oxidation), in light bulbs, and as a liquid coolant. Living things need nitrogen for proteins and DNA, but most cannot use N₂ directly — it must be fixed into compounds, by lightning, bacteria, or industry.
Ammonia (NH₃) is a colourless gas with a sharp smell, very soluble in water, giving an alkaline solution. It is lighter than air, turns red litmus blue, and reacts with acids to form ammonium salts. Its main use is in fertilisers, which feed the world's crops.
The Haber process makes ammonia from nitrogen (from air) and hydrogen (from natural gas or water): N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃. The reaction is reversible and exothermic. Industry uses about 450 °C, 200 atmospheres pressure, and an iron catalyst — a compromise: lower temperature would favour yield but be too slow, higher pressure would favour yield but cost too much to build and run.
Unreacted gases are recycled, and the ammonia is cooled and liquefied. Most ammonia becomes fertilisers (urea, ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate) and nitric acid. Without the Haber process, modern farming could not feed today's population.
Nitric acid (HNO₃) is made from ammonia in the Ostwald process: ammonia is oxidised by air over a platinum catalyst to nitrogen monoxide, which is further oxidised to nitrogen dioxide and then absorbed in water to give nitric acid. It is a strong acid and a powerful oxidising agent — it reacts with most metals (except gold and platinum) and with organic materials.
Uses: making fertilisers (ammonium nitrate), explosives (in controlled industrial use), dyes, and for etching metals. Nitric acid must be handled with care — it stains skin yellow and its fumes are harmful. (This page describes industrial chemistry only; it gives no instructions for making explosives.)
Sulphur is a yellow, brittle solid found near volcanoes and in underground deposits. It exists in allotropic forms — the common rhombic sulphur (S₈ rings) and monoclinic sulphur — and it burns in air with a blue flame to give sulphur dioxide (SO₂), a choking gas. Sulphur is used in fungicides, in vulcanising rubber, and in making sulphuric acid.
Sulphur dioxide dissolves in water to give sulphurous acid and is used as a bleach and preservative (in dried fruit), but it is also an air pollutant: with rainwater it forms acid rain, which damages buildings, crops and lakes.
Sulphuric acid is called the king of chemicals because so much industry depends on it. In the Contact process: (1) sulphur is burned to SO₂; (2) SO₂ is oxidised to SO₃ over a vanadium(V) oxide catalyst at about 450 °C and 1–2 atm; (3) SO₃ is absorbed in concentrated acid to make oleum, which is diluted to sulphuric acid. SO₃ is not dissolved directly in water, because the reaction is violently exothermic and makes an acid mist.
Uses: fertilisers, detergents, paints, car batteries, and refining petroleum. Concentrated sulphuric acid is a strong dehydrating agent (it chars sugar black) and must never be diluted by adding water to the acid — always acid into water.
Oxides and their character: Non-metal oxides are usually acidic (SO₂ and CO₂ dissolve to give acids); metal oxides are usually basic (CuO, CaO react with acids); a few are amphoteric, reacting with both acids and bases — the book names aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) and zinc oxide (ZnO); and a few are neutral (nitric oxide NO and carbon monoxide CO). This classification is what exercise questions B 19.6–19.7, C 19.4 and D 19.3 test.
NOₓ in the air: Nitrogen oxides from engines and furnaces do two kinds of damage. In sunlight they help form photochemical smog and PAN (peroxyacetyl nitrate), which irritates eyes and lungs; and they oxidise in air to nitric acid, joining sulphuric acid in acid rain (exercise MCQ 19.8). Metal reactivity: group 1 metals are more reactive than group 2 — they react violently with cold water and oxygen, while group 2 metals react more gently (exercise D 19.4, MCQ 19.4).
This chapter is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for Class 10 Chemistry. No official Class 10 Chemistry book was on disk for this build, so no book page numbers are claimed. The exercise questions and answers below are the library chapter's own; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.
1. The reason for maintaining higher temperature for the production of ammonia is:
Answer: (a) — the reaction is too slow at low temperature because its activation energy is high; industry accepts a lower equilibrium yield to get a workable rate.
2. The contact process used for the industrial production of H₂SO₄ is sensitive to the impurities present in SO₂ and O₂ because the impurities:
Answer: (a) — impurities poison the vanadium(V) oxide catalyst, destroying its capability.
3. Which of the following oxides is neutral in character?
Answer: (d) NO — Al₂O₃ is amphoteric, SO₂ and CO₂ are acidic, while nitrogen monoxide is neutral.
4. Sodium is considered more reactive than magnesium because:
Answer: (a) — sodium loses its outer electron more easily (it is more electropositive/metallic) than magnesium.
5. Secondary pollutants present in the atmosphere are:
Answer: (c) Ozone and PAN — these are not emitted directly; they form in the air from primary pollutants (NOₓ, hydrocarbons).
6. SO₃ is absorbed in H₂SO₄ rather than H₂O during the production of sulphuric acid because:
Answer: (b) — SO₃ + H₂O is violently exothermic and makes a fine acid mist that is hard to condense; absorbing in acid to make oleum avoids this.
7. Oxides formed when oxygen reacts with metals:
Answer: (b) Basic — metal oxides are generally basic (a few, like Al₂O₃ and ZnO, are amphoteric).
8. Major components of acid rain are:
Answer: (a) H₂SO₄ and HNO₃ — sulphuric and nitric acids formed from SO₂ and NOₓ in the air.
1. 19.1 How is nitrogen obtained from air?
Answer: By fractional distillation of liquid air: air is cooled until it liquefies, then warmed slowly; nitrogen (boiling point −196 °C) boils off before oxygen (−183 °C) and is collected.
2. 19.2 How is hydrogen produced from methane?
Answer: By steam reforming: methane reacts with steam over a nickel catalyst at high temperature: CH₄ + H₂O → CO + 3H₂.
3. 19.3 Which conditions are used to oxidize SO₂ to SO₃?
Answer: A vanadium(V) oxide catalyst, about 450 °C, and about 1–2 atm (200 kPa) pressure.
4. 19.4 Why CO₂ is called an acidic oxide while CO is called a neutral oxide?
Answer: CO₂ dissolves in water to give carbonic acid (H₂CO₃) and reacts with bases to give salts, so it is acidic; CO does neither — it does not react with acids or bases — so it is neutral.
5. 19.5 How do magnesium and calcium differ with each other towards their reactions with water?
Answer: Magnesium reacts very slowly with cold water (a thin Mg(OH)₂ layer protects it) but reacts with steam; calcium reacts steadily with cold water, giving calcium hydroxide + hydrogen, more vigorously than magnesium.
6. 19.6 How are the reactivities of metals determined?
Answer: From their reactions with water, steam, dilute acids and oxygen (how vigorously they react), from displacement reactions (a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive one from its salt), and from the voltages of galvanic cells made with them.
7. 19.7 Which secondary pollutants are produced by oxides of nitrogen?
Answer: Ozone (O₃) and peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) — formed when NOₓ reacts with hydrocarbons in sunlight (photochemical smog).
1. 19.1 Why ammonia is regarded as an important chemical?
Answer: Because it is the gateway to fertilisers (urea, ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate) that feed crops, to nitric acid, and to many industrial chemicals and cleaning products — modern agriculture depends on it.
2. 19.2 How SO₂ present in the atmosphere is converted to SO₃?
Answer: Nitrogen oxides in the air act as catalysts (and sunlight/oxidants help): 2SO₂ + O₂ → 2SO₃ (NOₓ-catalysed). The SO₃ then reacts with water vapour to give sulphuric acid, a major component of acid rain.
3. 19.3 The burning of fossil fuels in a car engine is responsible for the production of oxides of nitrogen. Explain.
Answer: At the very high temperatures inside an engine, nitrogen and oxygen from the air — normally unreactive together — combine: N₂ + O₂ → 2NO. The NO is then oxidised in the air to NO₂. So it is the engine's heat, not the fuel itself, that creates nitrogen oxides.
4. 19.4 The metals present at the top of the reactivity series are regarded as more reactive than those present at the bottom. Comment on this statement.
Answer: The statement is correct: top metals (K, Na, Ca, Mg) lose electrons most easily, so they react vigorously with water, acids and oxygen, while bottom metals (Cu, Ag, Au, Pt) lose electrons with difficulty and barely react — that is exactly what the reactivity series orders.
5. 19.5 How fossil fuels produce SO₂?
Answer: Fossil fuels (especially coal and oil) contain sulphur impurities; when the fuel burns, the sulphur burns too: S + O₂ → SO₂, which escapes in the exhaust/flue gases.
1. 19.1 Explain the production of ammonia on industrial scale.
Answer (model points): By the Haber process: nitrogen from air and hydrogen from methane (steam reforming) are mixed, compressed to about 200 atm, heated to about 450 °C and passed over an iron catalyst: N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃. The reaction is exothermic and reversible, so conditions are a compromise between yield and rate; unreacted gases are recycled and ammonia is liquefied by cooling. Most ammonia goes to fertilisers and nitric acid.
2. 19.2 Describe the contact process for the production of sulphuric acid.
Answer (model points): (1) Sulphur is burned (or sulphide ores roasted) to SO₂. (2) SO₂ + O₂ ⇌ 2SO₃ over a vanadium(V) oxide catalyst at about 450 °C and 1–2 atm. (3) SO₃ is absorbed in concentrated sulphuric acid to make oleum (H₂S₂O₇), which is diluted with water to give concentrated H₂SO₄. SO₃ is not dissolved directly in water because it makes an uncontrollable acid mist. جواب: (1) سلفر جلا کر SO₂، (2) V₂O₅ کیٹالسٹ پر 450 °C پر SO₂ سے SO₃، (3) SO₃ کو مرتکز تیزاب میں جذب کر کے اولیم، پھر پتلا کر کے H₂SO₄۔
3. 19.3 Explain the formation and properties of acidic and basic oxides.
Answer (model points): Non-metal oxides are usually acidic: they form when a non-metal burns in oxygen (e.g. S + O₂ → SO₂, C + O₂ → CO₂) and they react with bases to give salt + water (e.g. CO₂ + 2NaOH → Na₂CO₃ + H₂O) and turn blue litmus red in water. Metal oxides are usually basic: they form when a metal burns or its compound decomposes (e.g. 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO) and they react with acids to give salt + water (e.g. MgO + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂O).
4. 19.4 Differentiate between first and second group metals based on their reactivities with oxygen and water.
Answer (model points): Group 1 metals (Li, Na, K) are very reactive: they tarnish quickly in air (forming oxides) and react vigorously — even violently — with cold water, giving the hydroxide + hydrogen (potassium may catch fire). Group 2 metals are less reactive: magnesium reacts very slowly with cold water (a protective hydroxide layer) but burns brightly in oxygen and reacts with steam; calcium reacts steadily with cold water giving Ca(OH)₂ + H₂, but far less violently than group 1 metals.
5. 19.5 Describe the role of oxides of nitrogen in the formation of PAN and the acid rain.
Answer (model points): In car engines, high temperatures make N₂ + O₂ → NO, which oxidises to NO₂. In sunlight, NOₓ reacts with unburnt hydrocarbons to form peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN), a component of photochemical smog that irritates eyes and lungs. NOₓ also dissolves in rainwater to give nitric acid, and catalyses the oxidation of atmospheric SO₂ to SO₃ → H₂SO₄, so nitrogen oxides drive acid rain both directly and indirectly.
