1. Why Carbon is Special: Catenation
🏷 Tags: carbon, catenation, organic chemistry
ENGLISH

Organic chemistry is the study of carbon compounds — with a few exceptions like CO₂ and carbonates, which are treated as inorganic. Carbon is special because of catenation: carbon atoms bond strongly to each other, forming long chains, branches and rings. That is why there are millions of known organic compounds, far more than inorganic ones.

Carbon forms four covalent bonds, so it can build complex structures. Organic compounds are the basis of life (proteins, fats, carbohydrates, DNA) and of modern materials (plastics, fuels, medicines, dyes, soaps).

CCCCCatenation: C—C—C—C chains, branches and rings
2. Classification and Functional Groups
🏷 Tags: functional group, classification, alkane, alkene
ENGLISH

Organic compounds are classified by their functional group — the atom or group of atoms that gives the molecule its characteristic reactions. The main groups at this level: alkanes (C—C, no functional group), alkenes (C=C), alkynes (C≡C), alcohols (—OH), carboxylic acids (—COOH), aldehydes (—CHO), ketones (C=O) and esters (—COO—).

Compounds with the same functional group behave similarly: all alcohols, for example, react with sodium and burn with a clean flame. Naming follows the functional group too — alcohols end in -ol (ethanol), carboxylic acids in -oic acid (ethanoic acid).

3. Homologous Series and General Formulae
🏷 Tags: homologous series, general formula, CH2
ENGLISH

A homologous series is a family of compounds with the same functional group, the same general formula, and each member differing from the next by —CH₂—. Members show a gradual change in physical properties (melting/boiling points rise with chain length) but similar chemical properties.

Examples: alkanes CₙH₂ₙ₊₂ (methane, ethane, propane, butane…), alkenes CₙH₂ₙ, alcohols CₙH₂ₙ₊₁OH. Knowing the general formula lets you write the formula of any member — e.g. the 5th alkane is C₅H₁₂ (pentane).

CH₄ → C₂H₆ → C₃H₈ → C₄H₁₀ → C₅H₁₂methane ethane propane butane pentaneeach step adds —CH₂—boiling point rises with chain length
4. Sources: Coal, Petroleum and Natural Gas
🏷 Tags: coal, petroleum, natural gas, fossil fuel
ENGLISH

Most organic compounds come from fossil fuels: natural gas (mainly methane, used for cooking and heating), petroleum (refined by fractional distillation into petrol, diesel, kerosene, lubricating oil, bitumen), and coal (used for electricity and as a source of organic chemicals).

These are non-renewable: they took millions of years to form and are being used far faster than they form. Burning them releases CO₂, contributing to global warming, and their extraction can pollute land and water — a reason to develop renewable sources and use fuels efficiently.

5. Types of Organic Reactions
🏷 Tags: combustion, substitution, addition, reaction types
ENGLISH

Organic reactions follow patterns. Combustion: burning in oxygen gives CO₂ + H₂O (complete) or CO + C (incomplete, sooty). Substitution: one atom/group replaces another — e.g. methane with chlorine in sunlight gives chloromethane + HCl. Addition: across a double/triple bond — e.g. ethene + bromine gives dibromoethane, and ethene + hydrogen gives ethane.

Oxidation: e.g. ethanol oxidised to ethanoic acid (vinegar). Recognising the pattern tells you the product type even for an unfamiliar reaction — a key board-exam skill.

Combustion: fuel + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂OSubstitution: CH₄ + Cl₂ → CH₃Cl + HClAddition: C₂H₄ + Br₂ → C₂H₄Br₂Oxidation: C₂H₅OH → CH₃COOH
6. Isomerism and IUPAC Namingآئسومیرزم اور IUPAC نام دینا
🏷 Tags: isomerism, IUPAC, naming, chain, position
ENGLISH

Isomerism: Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structures are isomers. Chain isomers differ in the carbon skeleton (butane vs 2-methylpropane); position isomers differ in where the functional group sits (propan-1-ol vs propan-2-ol); functional-group isomers have different groups altogether (an alcohol vs an ether, e.g. C₂H₆O as ethanol or methoxymethane). Exercise MCQ 21.6 counts 3 isomers of C₅H₁₂ (pentane, 2-methylbutane, 2,2-dimethylpropane).

IUPAC naming of alcohols: (1) Pick the longest chain containing the —OH group. (2) Replace the -e of the alkane with -ol. (3) Number so the —OH gets the lowest possible locant. (4) Name branches alphabetically, e.g. 4-methylpentan-2-ol (exercise MCQ 23.6 in the next chapter uses the same rule). Descriptive question D 21.5 tests the same skill for an alcohol, an aldehyde, a carboxylic acid and an ester.

Section B: Short Answer Questions

1. 21.1 What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes) have only single bonds and the maximum number of hydrogens; unsaturated hydrocarbons (alkenes, alkynes) have double or triple bonds, fewer hydrogens, and undergo addition reactions.

2. 21.2 Write down the structural formula of Butan-2-ol.

Answer / جواب

Answer: CH₃—CH(OH)—CH₂—CH₃ — the —OH is on carbon 2 of a four-carbon chain. جواب: CH₃—CH(OH)—CH₂—CH₃۔

3. 21.3 Why is ethylamine CH₃—CH₂—NH₂ called an organic compound?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Because it is a carbon compound with carbon–hydrogen bonds built on a carbon chain — the presence of nitrogen does not make it inorganic; amines are a family of organic compounds.

4. 21.4 Write down the formula of an ester called ethyl methanoate.

7. 21.7 What is common in carboxyl group, amide functional group and ester functional group?

Answer / جواب

Answer: All three contain a carbonyl group (C=O): carboxyl —COOH, amide —CONH₂, ester —COOR.

Section C: Constructed Response Questions

1. 21.1 Why the members of a homologous series have similar chemical properties?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Because they share the same functional group, and chemical reactions happen at the functional group — the length of the carbon chain does not change the type of reaction.

2. 21.2 How are the properties of 2-methylpropane different from n-butane, both containing the same number of carbon atoms?

Answer / جواب

Answer: They are isomers (both C₄H₁₀) but 2-methylpropane is branched while n-butane is a straight chain: the branched molecule has a smaller surface area and weaker intermolecular forces, so it has a lower boiling point (−12 °C vs −0.5 °C) and is a gas more readily.

3. 21.3 Write down the structural formulae of isomers shown by saturated hydrocarbon containing five carbon atoms.

Answer / جواب

Answer: C₅H₁₂ has three isomers: n-pentane CH₃—CH₂—CH₂—CH₂—CH₃; 2-methylbutane CH₃—CH(CH₃)—CH₂—CH₃; and 2,2-dimethylpropane C(CH₃)₄ (a central carbon with four methyl groups).

4. 21.4 Write down the structural formulae of the isomers shown by butene.

Answer / جواب

Answer: C₄H₈ isomers: but-1-ene CH₂=CH—CH₂—CH₃; but-2-ene CH₃—CH=CH—CH₃ (cis and trans forms); and 2-methylpropene CH₂=C(CH₃)—CH₃.

5. 21.5 Explain the difference among functional groups present in aldehyde, ketone and carboxylic acid.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Aldehyde: —CHO, a C=O with a hydrogen on the carbonyl carbon, always at the end of a chain. Ketone: C=O in the middle of a chain (carbonyl carbon joined to two carbons). Carboxylic acid: —COOH, a C=O joined to an —OH group. All contain a carbonyl (C=O), but the second group attached decides the family and its reactions.

Section D: Descriptive / Numerical Questions

1. 21.1 What is an organic compound? How organic compounds are classified based on the type of carbon chain present in them?

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): An organic compound is a carbon compound (with C—H bonds, except a few like CO₂ and carbonates). By carbon chain: open-chain (aliphatic) — straight or branched chains, e.g. ethane, 2-methylpropane; closed-chain (cyclic) — rings, either alicyclic (e.g. cyclohexane) or aromatic (e.g. benzene, with a ring of alternating double bonds).

2. 21.2 Explain structural formula giving examples.

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): A structural formula shows how atoms are bonded, not just how many there are. Examples: ethanol displayed as H—C—C—O—H (all bonds shown) or condensed as CH₃—CH₂—OH; ethanoic acid as CH₃—COOH. Structural formulae reveal functional groups and distinguish isomers with the same molecular formula.

3. 21.3 Write down five characteristics of a homologous series.

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): (1) Same functional group. (2) Same general formula. (3) Successive members differ by —CH₂—. (4) Similar chemical properties. (5) Physical properties change gradually (e.g. boiling points rise) with increasing molecular mass.

4. 21.4 Give IUPAC rules for naming alcohols.

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): (1) Find the longest chain containing the —OH group. (2) Replace the alkane's -e with -ol. (3) Number the chain so the —OH carbon gets the lowest possible number. (4) Name branches alphabetically with their positions, e.g. 4-methylpentan-2-ol. (5) For diols/triols use -diol/-triol with two/three numbers.

5. 21.5 Name the following compounds: (a) CH₃—CH₂—CH₂OH (b) CH₃—CH₂—CHO (c) CH₃—CH₂—CH₂—COOH (d) CH₃—CH₂—CO—O—CH₃.

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) Propan-1-ol. (b) Propanal. (c) Butanoic acid. (d) Methyl propanoate.
