A polymer is a long-chain molecule made by joining many small repeating units called monomers in a process called polymerisation. The number of repeating units (n) can be hundreds or thousands. Polymers are everywhere: natural ones in our bodies and plants, and synthetic ones in plastics, fibres and glues.
Polymers are useful because their long chains tangle and attract each other, giving strength, flexibility and resistance to chemicals — properties that small molecules do not have.
Addition polymerisation: unsaturated monomers (alkenes) add together as their double bonds open, with no other product. Examples: ethene → polythene, propene → polypropene, chloroethene → PVC, styrene → polystyrene. The polymer name is "poly" + monomer name.
Condensation polymerisation: monomers with two functional groups join and lose a small molecule (usually water) at each link. Examples: nylon (diamine + dicarboxylic acid), polyester/Terylene (diol + dicarboxylic acid), Bakelite (phenol + formaldehyde). Proteins and starch are natural condensation polymers.
Starch (glucose polymer) stores energy in plants; cellulose (also glucose, but linked differently) gives plant cell walls their strength and is the fibre in cotton and paper. Proteins (amino acid polymers) build bodies and act as enzymes. Natural rubber (polymer of isoprene, from rubber trees) is elastic because its chains can stretch and spring back.
Natural polymers are usually biodegradable — microbes can break them down — which is why cotton and paper rot, while most synthetic plastics do not.
Polythene (bags, bottles, packaging) is light, waterproof and cheap. PVC (pipes, window frames, flooring) is tough and weather-resistant. Polystyrene (packaging foam, disposable cups) is light and insulating. Nylon (ropes, clothes, parachutes) is strong and elastic. Polyester/Terylene (clothes, bottles) resists creasing. Bakelite (electrical switches, handles) is hard, heat-resistant and does not melt — a thermosetting plastic.
Thermoplastics (polythene, PVC, nylon) soften when heated, so they can be reshaped and recycled. Thermosetting plastics (Bakelite, melamine) set permanently and cannot be remelted.
Most plastics are non-biodegradable: they do not rot, so discarded plastic piles up in landfills, rivers and seas, where it harms animals that eat it or get tangled in it, and breaks into microplastics that enter food chains. Burning plastic releases toxic fumes.
Solutions: use less single-use plastic (carry a reusable bag and bottle), reuse containers, recycle thermoplastics (sorted by the recycling code), and develop biodegradable plastics from plant starch that microbes can break down. Every reused bag is one less piece of lasting waste.
PET: Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a condensation polymer of terephthalic acid (a dicarboxylic acid) and ethylene glycol (a diol), joined by ester links with water lost at each link (exercise D 26.1). Because PET is a thermoplastic, it softens on heating and can be remelted — so PET bottles (recycling code 1) can be recycled into fibres, bottles and packaging (MCQ 26.5). Thermosetting plastics like epoxy cannot be remelted.
Catalysts and deducing monomers: In addition polymerisation a catalyst (e.g. a Ziegler–Natta catalyst) lowers the activation energy, speeds the reaction, lets it run at lower temperature and pressure, and controls chain length and branching — without being used up (exercise C 26.3). To deduce a monomer, reverse the process: turn the chain's single bonds back into the double bond — so —[CH₂—CH(Cl)]ₙ— comes from chloroethene (CH₂=CHCl) and —[CH₂—CH(CN)]ₙ— from acrylonitrile (CH₂=CH—CN) (C 26.4).

5. Which of the following polymers can be recycled?
Answer: (a) PET — PET is the standard recyclable thermoplastic (bottle code 1); epoxy is a thermosetting plastic and cannot be remelted.
6. Which of the following polymers is biodegradable?
Answer: (c) Starch — starch is a natural polymer that microbes break down; the others are synthetic and persist.
7. Which of the following polymers is obtained by condensation polymerization?
Answer: (c) Polyamide — polyamides form by condensation (water lost); PVC, polystyrene and polyethene are addition polymers.
1. 26.1 Give two examples each of addition polymers and condensation polymers.
Answer: Addition: polythene, PVC (also polystyrene, polypropene). Condensation: nylon (polyamide), polyester (also Bakelite, proteins, starch).
2. 26.2 How polymers are useful for us?
Answer: They are light, strong, cheap, waterproof, chemical-resistant and insulating — used for packaging, bottles, clothes, pipes, cables, furniture and medical items.
3. 26.3 How synthetic fibers are different from natural fibers?
Answer: Synthetic fibres (nylon, polyester) are stronger, wrinkle-free, quick-drying and non-absorbent, but non-biodegradable and less comfortable in heat; natural fibres (cotton, wool) are absorbent, comfortable and biodegradable, but wrinkle, shrink and wear faster.
4. 26.4 Are natural polymers hazardous for the environment? Explain why?
Answer: Generally no — natural polymers (cotton, paper, starch, wool) are biodegradable: microbes break them down into harmless substances, so they do not accumulate like synthetic plastics.
5. 26.5 Draw the structures of the following polymers: (a) Polypropylene (b) Polystyrene.
Answer (structures in words): (a) Polypropylene: —[CH₂—CH(CH₃)]ₙ— (propene units, methyl side group on every second carbon). (b) Polystyrene: —[CH₂—CH(C₆H₅)]ₙ— (styrene units, phenyl/benzene ring side group on every second carbon). جواب: (a) پولی پروپیلین: —[CH₂—CH(CH₃)]ₙ—؛ (b) پولی اسٹائرین: —[CH₂—CH(C₆H₅)]ₙ—۔
1. 26.1 Why is it dangerous to burn discarded articles made of plastics?
Answer: Burning plastics releases toxic gases and smoke — e.g. hydrogen chloride from PVC, carbon monoxide, and dioxins from chlorinated plastics — which damage lungs and pollute the air; ash may also contain toxic residues.
2. 26.2 Why is it not advisable to dump discarded synthetic articles in oceans?
Answer: They do not biodegrade: they float and accumulate, sea animals eat them or get tangled in them and die, and they break into microplastics that enter the marine food chain and eventually human food.
3. 26.3 What is the role of catalyst in addition polymerization?
Answer: The catalyst (e.g. a Ziegler–Natta catalyst for polythene/polypropene) lowers the activation energy, speeds up polymerisation, lets it run at lower temperature/pressure, and controls the polymer's structure (chain length, branching); it is not used up.
4. 26.4 Deduce the monomer from the following addition polymers: (i) —[CH₂—CH(Cl)]ₙ— (ii) —[CH₂—CH(CN)]ₙ—.
Answer: Reverse the addition: break the single bonds of the chain back into a double bond. (i) Chloroethene (vinyl chloride), CH₂=CHCl → poly(chloroethene) (PVC). (ii) Acrylonitrile, CH₂=CH—CN → polyacrylonitrile.
1. 26.1 How is PET formed? Can you recycle this polymer?
Answer (model points): PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a condensation polymer formed from terephthalic acid (a dicarboxylic acid) and ethylene glycol (a diol), with loss of water at each ester link. Yes, it can be recycled: it is a thermoplastic (recycling code 1), so bottles can be melted and remade into fibres, bottles and packaging.
2. 26.2 Differentiate between addition and condensation polymerizations.
Answer (model points): Addition: unsaturated monomers (alkenes) join by opening double bonds, no by-product, e.g. polythene, PVC. Condensation: monomers with two functional groups join with loss of a small molecule (usually water) at each link, e.g. nylon, polyester, proteins.
3. 26.3 Write down reactions alongwith the conditions to prepare polyamide and polyester.
Answer (model points): Polyamide (nylon): diamine + dicarboxylic acid, heated (often with a catalyst), water removed at each link: n H₂N—R—NH₂ + n HOOC—R′—COOH → [—NH—R—NH—CO—R′—CO—]ₙ + 2n H₂O. Polyester: diol + dicarboxylic acid, heated with a catalyst, water removed: n HO—R—OH + n HOOC—R′—COOH → [—O—R—O—CO—R′—CO—]ₙ + 2n H₂O.
4. 26.4 Describe the role of synthetic polymers in the textile industry.
Answer (model points): Nylon, polyester and acrylic fibres are strong, light, cheap, wrinkle-resistant, quick-drying and easy to wash; they are woven alone or blended with cotton/wool for clothes, carpets, ropes, parachutes and sails, greatly expanding what textiles can do.
5. 26.5 Describe the effects of synthetic polymers on the environment.
Answer (model points): Most synthetic polymers are non-biodegradable: they accumulate in landfills, rivers and oceans, harm wildlife (eating, entanglement), break into microplastics that enter food chains, and release toxic gases when burnt. Reducing use, reusing and recycling thermoplastics, and developing biodegradable polymers lessen the harm.
