6.1 What is Artificial Intelligence?

ENGLISH

Artificial Intelligence (AI) means making computers do tasks that normally need human intelligence: understanding language, recognising faces and speech, making decisions, solving problems and learning from experience. AI software is different from ordinary software: ordinary software follows fixed instructions written by a programmer for every case, while AI systems learn patterns from data and can handle new cases they were not explicitly programmed for.

Narrow vs general AI: Almost all AI today is narrow AI — good at one task, like translating text, recommending videos, or recognising cats in photos. General AI (a machine with human-like intelligence across all tasks) does not exist yet; it is a research goal, not a product you can buy.

Everyday AI you already meet: voice assistants, spam filters, maps that predict traffic, face unlock, autocorrect, and video recommendations. None of these “understand” like a human — they find patterns in huge amounts of data, very fast.

6.2 Machine Learning: Learning from Data

ENGLISH

Machine Learning (ML) is the part of AI where a system learns from data instead of being told every rule. Classic example: to teach a program to tell cats from dogs, you do not write rules about ears and tails — you show it thousands of labelled photos, and it learns the patterns itself.

Features and labels: In training data, features are the inputs the system looks at (e.g. an animal's size, ear shape, colour), and the label is the correct answer (e.g. “cat”). The system builds a model — a mathematical pattern linking features to labels — and then uses the model on new, unseen examples.

Train and test: Data is split into a training set (to learn from) and a test set (kept aside to check honestly). A model that only memorises training answers but fails on new data has overfitted — like a student who memorised the practice paper but cannot answer new questions.

Supervised learningInputs WITH correct answers (labels)Spam / not-spam emails; marks prediction from study hours
Unsupervised learningInputs with NO labels — find groups/patternsGrouping customers by shopping habits; finding topics in articles
Reinforcement learningNo answers — rewards for good actions, penalties for badGame-playing programs; a robot learning to walk

Supervised is like learning with a teacher and an answer key. Unsupervised is like sorting a pile of mixed photos into groups without being told the groups. Reinforcement is like learning a game by playing many times and remembering which moves win points.

Two supervised jobs to know: classification (predict a category: spam or not, cat or dog) and regression (predict a number: tomorrow's temperature, a house price).

6.4 How a Model Learns — and Goes Wrong
🏷 Tags: How a Model Learns — and Goes Wrong
ENGLISH

Learning is a loop: (1) feed training data to the model; (2) the model predicts; (3) compare predictions with true labels; (4) adjust the model to reduce errors; (5) repeat until errors stop improving. Accuracy (percentage of correct predictions on test data) measures success — but it must be measured on data the model has never seen.

What goes wrong: Bad/biased data — if training photos show only one kind of person, the model fails on others (bias). Too little data — patterns are guesses, not knowledge. Overfitting — memorising training data instead of learning general patterns. Wrong features — predicting exam results from shoe size would be nonsense, however good the maths.

Golden rule: an ML system is only as good as its data. Garbage data → confident, wrong predictions. That is why data cleaning (Chapter 5) comes before machine learning.

PREDICT from current model▼COMPARE with true labels▼ADJUST to reduce errors▼REPEAT until good enough
Model ka seekhna se samjho: Predict → compare → adjust → repeat

ENGLISH

Language: translation apps, chatbots, autocorrect, voice assistants (speech recognition + language understanding). Vision: face unlock, photo search (“show my pictures of cats”), medical image checks. Recommendations: “you may also like” on video and shopping apps — models learn your taste from what you watched/bought. Prediction: traffic time on maps, weather forecasts, fraud alerts on bank cards.

Notice the pattern: each example follows data → model → prediction/action. When you meet a new AI product in an exam question, explain it with this pattern: what data it learns from, what it predicts, and what action follows.

Not AI: a fixed timetable app, a calculator, or a program that prints the same reply to every message — these follow fixed rules with no learning from data.

DATA: photos, text, clicks▼MODEL: learned patterns▼PREDICTION: label / suggestion▼ACTION: unlock, translate, warn

6.6 Limits, Bias and Ethics of AIAI
🏷 Tags: Limits, Bias and Ethics of AI
ENGLISH

AI does not understand like humans. It matches patterns; it has no common sense, no real knowledge of the world, and can be confidently wrong (for example, inventing a fake “fact” in fluent language). Always verify important AI output from a trusted source.

Bias: if training data under-represents a group, the system treats that group unfairly — e.g. a hiring model trained mostly on one group's CVs, or a face-recognition system that fails more often on some faces. Fixing bias means fixing the data and testing on all groups, not just overall accuracy.

Ethics and jobs: AI raises real questions — who is responsible when an AI decision harms someone? Who owns the data it learned from? Will some jobs change or disappear while new ones (AI trainer, data analyst, robotics technician) appear? A good exam answer names both a benefit and a risk, and says humans must stay in charge of important decisions.

BIASED DATA → unfair results▼NO COMMON SENSE → confident errors▼PRIVACY: whose data was used?▼RULE: humans decide important things
AI ki hudood aur ethics se samjho: Bias, errors, privacy — humans stay in charge

SLO-BASED — NOT THE OFFICIAL EXERCISE

Book note (please read): This page follows the PCTB book Computer Science and Entrepreneurship, Class 10 (session 2026–27). The chapter titles and section order were verified against current 2026–27 Punjab listings and the board syllabus for this book. The book PDF itself could not be opened page-by-page during this build, so the questions below are SLO / board-pattern questions written for this chapter — they are NOT presented as the book's official exercise. Where a point was not confirmed from the book, it is kept general and no invented fact is stated as a book fact.

Section 1: Multiple Choice Questions
1. AI means making computers do tasks that normally need:

Answer: (b) Human intelligence — understanding language, recognising faces, deciding, learning.

2. Almost all AI today is:

Answer: (b) Narrow AI — good at one task; general human-like AI does not exist yet.

3. In ML training data, the correct answer for an example is called the:

Answer: (b) Label — features are the inputs looked at, the model is the learned pattern.

4. Learning from inputs WITH correct answers is:

Answer: (c) Supervised learning — like learning with a teacher and an answer key.

5. Grouping customers by shopping habits without labels is:

Answer: (b) Unsupervised learning — finding groups/patterns with no labels given.

6. A model that memorises training answers but fails on new data has:

Answer: (b) Overfitted — like memorising a practice paper but failing new questions.

7. Predicting tomorrow's temperature (a number) is:

Answer: (b) Regression — predicting a number; classification predicts a category.

8. An AI hiring model that unfairly favours one group most likely suffers from:

Answer: (b) Biased training data — under-representation in training data causes unfair results.

Section 2: Short Questions
1. Define AI and state how AI software differs from ordinary software.

Answer: AI: making computers do tasks needing human intelligence (language, recognition, decisions, learning). Ordinary software follows fixed programmer-written rules for every case; AI systems learn patterns from data and handle new cases not explicitly programmed.

2. Differentiate between narrow AI and general AI.

Answer: Narrow AI is good at one task (translation, recommendations, face recognition) and is what exists today. General AI would have human-like intelligence across all tasks; it does not exist yet and is a research goal.

3. What are features and labels in ML? Give an example.

Answer: Features are inputs the system looks at; labels are correct answers. Example: for animal photos, features = size, ear shape, colour; label = 'cat' or 'dog'.

4. What is overfitting? How is it detected?

Answer: Overfitting is memorising training data instead of learning general patterns, so the model fails on new data. It is detected by testing on a test set kept aside — high training accuracy but low test accuracy signals overfitting.

5. Why must important AI output be verified?

Answer: Because AI matches patterns without common sense or real world knowledge, so it can be confidently wrong (e.g. inventing a fluent but fake 'fact'). Verify from a trusted source.

Section 3: Long Questions
1. Explain supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning with one example each.

Answer: Supervised: learns from inputs with correct answers (labels) — e.g. spam/not-spam emails; jobs include classification (category) and regression (number). Unsupervised: no labels given; the system finds groups/patterns — e.g. grouping customers by shopping habits. Reinforcement: no answers; the system learns by rewards for good actions and penalties for bad — e.g. a game-playing program or robot learning to walk by trial and reward.

2. Describe how an ML model is trained and tested, and explain why the test set must be unseen data.

Answer: Training data (features + labels) is fed to the model; it predicts, errors are compared with true labels, and the model is adjusted in a loop until errors stop improving. Then a separate test set — data never used in training — measures honest accuracy. Testing on training data would be meaningless, like marking a student on the exact paper they memorised; unseen data shows whether general patterns were learned or only memorised (overfitting).

3. Discuss one benefit and two risks of AI, with the rule that humans must stay in charge.

Answer: Benefit: AI handles huge data fast — e.g. medical image checks, traffic prediction, translation — saving time and finding patterns humans would miss. Risks: (1) Bias — under-represented groups in training data get unfair results (hiring, face recognition). (2) Confident errors — no common sense, so fluent but false output, plus privacy questions about whose data trained it, and job changes. Rule: humans must verify important output and stay responsible for important decisions; AI assists, it does not replace human judgement.
