An entrepreneur is an individual who, rather than working as an employee, creates and runs a small business, accepting all the risks and rewards of the venture. Entrepreneurs are commonly seen as innovators — a source of new ideas, goods, services and business.
Entrepreneurship is the process of discovering an opportunity, mobilising resources, and launching an enterprise to use the opportunity. A business is established for the welfare of the people; an entrepreneur accelerates a society's economic growth, creates wealth for workers and for the government (through taxation, redistributed as services), and fosters creativity by always finding new ways to do things.
Digital entrepreneurship means doing all this with online tools: selling through websites and social media instead of only a shop, reaching customers across the country (or world) from a phone, using digital payments, and marketing online at low cost. The business idea matters as much as ever — digital tools only carry it further, faster.
Good businesses start from problems people actually have, not from products looking for buyers. Look around: students need affordable notes, a neighbourhood lacks home delivery, farmers need disease advice — each problem is a possible business. Test the idea cheaply first: ask potential customers, sell a small batch, and listen honestly to what they say.
Problem solving is the entrepreneur's core skill: define the problem clearly, think of several solutions, try the simplest one, and improve from feedback. Adaptability means changing the plan when facts change — a product that does not sell, a platform rule that changes, a price rise. Entrepreneurs who adapt survive; those who defend a failing plan do not.
Design thinking (a useful sequence): empathise (understand the customer's life), define (state the exact problem), ideate (many ideas, no judging yet), prototype (a small, cheap version), test (real users try it) — then improve and repeat.
Steps that work: (1) Choose a product/service you can actually deliver well. (2) Know your customer: who they are, what they need, what they can pay. (3) Set up an online presence: a page/shop on a marketplace or social media, with clear photos, honest descriptions and prices. (4) Arrange payments (cash on delivery, mobile wallets, bank transfer — whichever customers trust) and delivery (courier or local drop-off). (5) Start small, keep records of every sale and cost, and grow only what already sells.
Digital tools: website builders and online stores, design tools for logos and posts, e-commerce platforms, and productivity apps for orders and accounts. A simple page with good photos and fast replies beats a fancy website nobody updates.
Money basics: revenue = all money coming in; expenses = all costs (stock, delivery, ads, packaging); profit = revenue − expenses. If profit is negative for long, the business must change price, costs or product — hope is not a plan. Track income and expenses from day one, even in a notebook.
Branding is how a business presents itself through design, messaging and customer experience — its name, logo, colours, tone and, most importantly, the experience customers remember. A brand is a promise: the same quality, every time. Brand development takes time; social media is a spectacular tool to grow it, because it lets customers connect with the business on a more personal level.
Marketing strategy: (1) Know your target audience — social media reaches different ages on different platforms, so choose where your customers actually are. (2) Give value before selling: useful posts, honest reviews, answers to questions. (3) Use customer interaction: reply to comments and feedback quickly — it builds trust. (4) Attract with promotional or giveaway posts, then keep customers with personalised follow-up. (5) Research: watch what competitors do and what customers say about your brand — logging on to see trends is valuable market research.
Social media benefits: brand development, reaching the target audience, customer interaction, attracting customers, and research. Threats: social engineering (attackers tricking people into giving secrets) and reputation damage from one careless post — post as if every customer will read it.
Intellectual Property Rights are legal rights over creations of the mind. For a digital business, four matter most:
| Right | Protects | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Copyright | Original creative works: text, photos, music, videos, software | Your product photos and posts cannot be copied by rivals |
| Trademark | Brand identifiers: names, logos, slogans | Your shop's name and logo |
| Patent | New inventions and processes (for a limited time) | A new device or technical method |
| Trade secret | Confidential business information | A secret recipe or supplier list, kept private |
For your own business: use original photos and text (do not copy others' posts), register your brand name/logo when you can, and respect others' rights — using a copied logo, song or photo can get your page removed and your business fined. For exams: name the right, say what it protects, and give an example — that is the full mark.
Legal framework means the set of laws and rules a business must follow. For a digital business in Pakistan, the basics are: register the business in the proper way as it grows; follow tax rules (keep sale/purchase records, file where required); follow consumer-protection rules (honest descriptions, fair prices, working return/refund policy); follow advertising rules (no false claims); and follow data rules (protect customer names, numbers, addresses and payment details).
Compliance means actually following these rules day to day: written prices, proper bills, honest ads, safe handling of customer data, and respecting platform rules (marketplaces and social media remove sellers who cheat customers or sell banned items). Compliance is not paperwork for its own sake — one legal or platform ban can end a small business overnight.
Contracts in plain words: when you agree with a supplier, courier or partner, write down price, quantity, delivery time and what happens if something goes wrong. A written agreement prevents most disputes.
Ethical business practices mean doing business honestly even when cheating would pay short-term: sell what you promise (same product as the photo), price fairly, admit mistakes and refund promptly, pay workers and suppliers on time, and never mislead with fake reviews, fake discounts (“was Rs. 5000, now Rs. 999” when it was never 5000) or copied content.
Why ethics pays: trust is a digital business's main asset. One viral complaint about cheating can destroy a page that took a year to build; one reputation for honesty brings repeat customers who cost nothing to attract. Ethical businesses also avoid legal trouble and platform bans.
Success habits to close the book: (1) Solve a real problem. (2) Start small and record everything. (3) Listen to customers and adapt fast. (4) Protect your brand and respect others' rights. (5) Follow the law and pay what is due. (6) Keep learning — tools change yearly, but honesty, quality and service never go out of date.
Book note (please read): This page follows the PCTB book Computer Science and Entrepreneurship, Class 10 (session 2026–27). The chapter titles and section order were verified against current 2026–27 Punjab listings and the board syllabus for this book. The book PDF itself could not be opened page-by-page during this build, so the questions below are SLO / board-pattern questions written for this chapter — they are NOT presented as the book's official exercise. Where a point was not confirmed from the book, it is kept general and no invented fact is stated as a book fact.
Answer: (b) Creates and runs a business, accepting its risks and rewards.
Answer: (b) Discovering an opportunity, mobilising resources and launching an enterprise.
Answer: (b) Revenue − expenses — if it stays negative, price, costs or product must change.
Answer: (b) A promise of the same quality every time, shown through design, messaging and experience.
Answer: (c) Original creative works like text, photos, music and software — brand names are trademarks, inventions are patents, secret recipes are trade secrets.
Answer: (b) Page removal and fines — it violates others' intellectual property rights.
Answer: (c) Same product as the photo, prompt refunds — honesty builds repeat customers.
Answer: (b) Empathising — understanding the customer's life, then defining the exact problem, ideating, prototyping and testing.
Answer: Entrepreneur: an individual who creates and runs a business rather than working as an employee, accepting its risks and rewards. Entrepreneurship: the process of discovering an opportunity, mobilising resources and launching an enterprise to use it.
Answer: Because facts change — a product may not sell, a platform rule may change, prices may rise. Entrepreneurs who adapt their plan survive; those who defend a failing plan do not.
Answer: Profit = revenue − expenses (revenue = all money in, expenses = all costs). Long negative profit means the business must change its price, costs or product — hope is not a plan.
Answer: Copyright protects original creative works — e.g. your product photos and posts cannot be copied. Trademark protects brand identifiers — e.g. your shop's name and logo.
Answer: Sell the same product as the photo; refund promptly when wrong. Ethics pays because trust is a digital business's main asset — one viral complaint about cheating can destroy a page built over a year, while honesty brings free repeat customers.
Answer: Digital entrepreneurship runs a business with online tools: selling via websites/social media instead of only a shop, reaching customers across the country from a phone, using digital payments and low-cost online marketing. A traditional shop serves only walk-in local customers and needs rent and shop hours; a digital shop is open day and night and can grow without a bigger shop — but it still needs a real product, honest photos/prices, delivery and customer trust. The idea matters as much as ever; digital tools only carry it further, faster.
Answer: Branding is how the business presents itself — name, logo, colours, tone and the customer experience — a promise of the same quality every time; social media grows it by personal connection. Strategy: know the target audience and choose platforms where they actually are; give value before selling (useful posts, honest reviews, answers); interact fast with comments/feedback to build trust; attract with promotions/giveaways, then keep customers with personalised follow-up; research competitors and customer comments. Watch threats too: social engineering and reputation damage from careless posts.
Answer: Idea: start from a real problem people have; test cheaply (ask customers, sell a small batch) and use design thinking (empathise → define → ideate → prototype → test). Money: track revenue, expenses and profit from day one; start small and grow only what sells. Law: honest ads/prices, proper bills and tax records, protect customer data, follow platform rules, and write agreements (price, quantity, delivery, what-if) with suppliers/couriers. Ethics: original content only, respect IPR (copyright/trademark/patent/trade secret), same product as the photo, fair prices, prompt refunds — trust brings repeat customers.
This chapter introduces digital entrepreneurship: what an entrepreneur does, how to find ideas by solving real problems, how to start an online business step by step, how strategic marketing and branding win trust, how intellectual property rights protect creative work, the legal framework every business must follow, and the ethical habits that turn a first sale into lasting success.
Revision guidance: Revision guidance: take one business idea and walk it through the whole chapter — idea, online setup, payment and delivery, branding, one IP right it needs, one legal rule it must follow, and one ethical habit that keeps customers coming back.
