Shelley's short poem is a single powerful stanza. It addresses Time directly as a sea:
“Unfathomable Sea! whose waves are years, / Ocean of Time, whose waters of deep woe / Are brackish with the salt of human tears!” Time's waves are years; its waters are salty with human tears — grief itself is dissolved in it.
“Thou shoreless flood, which in thy ebb and flow / Claspest the limits of mortality!” The flood has no shore — no boundary — and in its rising and falling (ebb and flow) it holds the limits of human life: birth and death happen inside it.
“And sick of prey, yet howling on for more, / Vomitest thy wrecks on its inhospitable shore; / Treacherous in calm, and terrible in storm, / Who shall put forth on thee, / Unfathomable Sea?” Time is a predator never satisfied — “sick of prey, yet howling on for more” — throwing its wrecks (ruined lives, lost things) onto a shore that offers no welcome. It is treacherous when calm and terrible in storm. The poem ends with a question, not an answer: who would dare set sail on such a sea?
In one line: time is vast, dangerous, sorrowful and unstoppable — and every human life sails (or is wrecked) upon it.
شیلی کی مختصر نظم ایک ہی طاقتور بند پر مشتمل ہے۔ یہ وقت کو براہ راست سمندر کہہ کر مخاطب کرتی ہے:
”Unfathomable Sea! whose waves are years, / Ocean of Time, whose waters of deep woe / Are brackish with the salt of human tears!“ وقت کی لہریں سال ہیں؛ اس کا پانی انسانی آنسوؤں کے نمک سے کھارا ہے — غم خود اس میں حل ہو گیا ہے۔
”Thou shoreless flood, which in thy ebb and flow / Claspest the limits of mortality!“ یہ سیلاب بے کنار ہے — اس کی کوئی حد نہیں — اور اس کے چڑھاؤ اتار (ebb and flow) میں انسانی زندگی کی حدود بندھی ہیں: پیدائش اور موت اسی کے اندر ہوتی ہے۔
”And sick of prey, yet howling on for more, / Vomitest thy wrecks on its inhospitable shore; / Treacherous in calm, and terrible in storm, / Who shall put forth on thee, / Unfathomable Sea?“ وقت ایک ایسا شکاری ہے جو کبھی سیر نہیں ہوتا — ”شکار سے بیزار، پھر بھی مزید کے لیے چیختا ہوا“ — اپنے ملبے (برباد زندگیاں، کھوئی چیزیں) کو ایک ایسی ساحل پر پھینکتا ہے جو خوش آمدید نہیں کہتا۔ یہ سکون میں دھوکے باز اور طوفان میں خوفناک ہے۔ نظم جواب سے نہیں بلکہ سوال سے ختم ہوتی ہے: ایسے سمندر پر کون سفر کرے گا؟
ایک جملے میں: وقت وسیع، خطرناک، غمگین اور ناقابل روک ہے — اور ہر انسانی زندگی اس پر سفر کرتی ہے (یا تباہ ہوتی ہے)۔
کتاب کی Glossary (p.74) کے تمام 9 لفظ (purani angrezi shaklen samet):
Exam note: “claspest” and “vomitest” end in -est because the poem addresses Time as “Thou” (old second person). Do not “correct” them to modern spellings when quoting.
کتاب کی گلاسری (صفحہ 74) کے تمام 9 الفاظ (قدیم انگریزی شکلیں سمیت):
امتحانی نوٹ: ”claspest“ اور ”vomitest“ کے آخر میں -est اس لیے ہے کہ نظم وقت کو ”Thou“ (قدیم ”تم“) کہہ کر مخاطب کرتی ہے۔ حوالہ دیتے وقت انھیں جدید املا میں ”درست“ نہ کریں۔
کتاب کا Theme box (p.73): “In this short but powerful poem, Shelley personifies time as an ocean, vast and dangerous; filled with sufferings and human losses. It's a vivid metaphor for the relentless passage of time, and the destruction it brings. The tone is dark and awe-filled, typical of Shelley's Romantic style.”
کتاب کا Summary (p.76) adds: “Shelley uses vivid imagery and personification to depict time not just as a measure, but as a living, howling entity that consumes all in its path. The tone is reflective and dark, revealing humanity's helplessness against the unstoppable flow of time and the inevitable reality of mortality.”
Central idea (book p.75, as an informational text): “time is a powerful, uncontrollable force that affects all of humanity”, developed through metaphorical language (“unfathomable sea”, “shoreless flood”, “howling”, “vomitest thy wrecks”) and powerful imagery.
Mechanics (p.77): Capitalization — first word of a sentence, proper nouns (people, places), days, months, titles, pronoun “I” (e.g. “Time waits for no one”). Punctuation — periods, commas, exclamation points, question marks, quotation marks clarify meaning (e.g. “Do you know what time it is?”). Spelling — correct letter arrangement (e.g. “Tomorrow is Wednesday”). Task: write 4–5 lines on what “time” means to you, with correct capitalization, punctuation and spelling. Hyphenation (p.78): hyphen joins words / splits a word at line-end; compound adjectives before nouns: “a well-known voice”, “a twenty-minute break”. Task: rewrite a line using a hyphenated compound adjective — e.g. “fast flying bird” → “fast-flying bird” — and note the effect.
Note: the line “Time's a bird, she says, who flies too fast…” on p.77 is the unit's punctuation example, not Shelley's poem — do not quote it as Shelley.
Writing — Transitions, Syntax, Precis, Formal Style (pp.76, 78–79): Transitions (however, therefore, in addition, as a result, meanwhile) connect ideas smoothly; syntax is word arrangement — varying sentence structures keeps interest and clarifies complex ideas; together they create cohesion. Book's before/after paragraph shows flat lines (“Time is compared to a bird. Time is fast.”) improved with “As a result”, “Furthermore”, “By the end of the poem”. Precise language = clear, specific, accurate words; domain-specific vocabulary for time: chronological, duration, fleeting. Metaphor (Time is a thief), simile (Time is like a river), analogy (Time is like sand slipping through fingers). Precis mechanics: summarize concisely in your own words, much shorter than the original, keeping essential ideas and tone, excluding unnecessary details/examples/figurative language. Task: write a precis of “Time” in 2–3 sentences on its central metaphor and message. Formal style = clear, professional, academic; no slang, no contractions, no casual language. Objective tone = neutral, unbiased, facts/evidence over opinions. Concluding statement = final part of a response.
Oral skill: panel discussion — “Do you think Shelley's portrayal of time as a destructive and uncontrollable force reflects how most people experience time in real life? Why or why not?”
میکانکس (صفحہ 77): بڑے حروف (Capitalization) — جملے کا پہلا لفظ، اسمائے علم (لوگ، جگہیں)، ہفتے کے دن، مہینے، خطابات، ضمیر ”I“ (مثلاً ”Time waits for no one“)۔ اوقاف (Punctuation) — فل اسٹاپ، کوما، فجائیہ، سوالیہ، واوین معنی واضح کرتے ہیں (مثلاً ”Do you know what time it is?“)۔ املا (Spelling) — حروف کی درست ترتیب (مثلاً ”Tomorrow is Wednesday“)۔ کام: ”وقت“ آپ کے لیے کیا ہے، اس پر 4-5 سطریں درست بڑے حروف، اوقاف اور املا سے لکھیں۔ ہائیفن (صفحہ 78): ہائیفن الفاظ جوڑتا ہے / سطر کے آخر میں لفظ توڑتا ہے؛ اسم سے پہلے مرکب صفات: ”a well-known voice“، ”a twenty-minute break“۔ کام: ہائیفن والی مرکب صفت سے سطر دوبارہ لکھیں — مثلاً ”fast flying bird“ → ”fast-flying bird“ — اور اثر نوٹ کریں۔
نوٹ: صفحہ 77 پر سطر ”Time's a bird, she says, who flies too fast…“ یونٹ کی اوقاف کی مثال ہے، شیلی کی نظم نہیں — اسے شیلی کے طور پر حوالہ نہ دیں۔
تحریر — ربط، نحو، خلاصہ، رسمی انداز (صفحہ 76، 78-79): ربطی الفاظ (Transitions) (however, therefore, in addition, as a result, meanwhile) خیالات کو ہمواری سے جوڑتے ہیں؛ نحو (Syntax) الفاظ کی ترتیب ہے — مختلف جملوں کی ساخت دلچسپی برقرار رکھتی ہے اور پیچیدہ خیالات واضح کرتی ہے؛ دونوں مل کر ربط (cohesion) بناتے ہیں۔ کتاب کا پہلے/بعد والا پیراگراف دکھاتا ہے کہ سپاٹ سطریں (”Time is compared to a bird. Time is fast.“) ”As a result“، ”Furthermore“، ”By the end of the poem“ سے بہتر ہوتی ہیں۔ دقیق زبان = واضح، مخصوص، درست الفاظ؛ وقت کے لیے شعبہ مخصوص الفاظ: chronological, duration, fleeting۔ استعارہ (Time is a thief)، تشبیہ (Time is like a river)، تمثیل (Time is like sand slipping through fingers)۔ خلاصہ (Precis) کی میکانکس: اپنے الفاظ میں مختصر و واضح خلاصہ، اصل سے بہت چھوٹا، بنیادی خیالات اور لہجہ برقرار رکھ کر، غیر ضروری تفصیلات/مثالیں/مجازی زبان چھوڑ کر۔ کام: ”Time“ کا خلاصہ 2-3 جملوں میں، مرکزی استعارے اور پیغام پر۔ رسمی انداز = واضح، پیشہ ورانہ، علمی؛ کوئی سلیانگ نہیں، کوئی مخفف نہیں، کوئی غیر رسمی زبان نہیں۔ معروضی لہجہ = غیر جانبدار، حقائق/شواہد پر مبنی، رائے پر نہیں۔ اختتامی بیان = جواب کا آخری حصہ۔
زبانی مہارت: پینل مباحثہ — ”کیا آپ سمجھتے ہیں کہ شیلی کا وقت کو تباہ کن اور ناقابل قابو قوت کے طور پر پیش کرنا اس بات کی عکاسی کرتا ہے کہ زیادہ تر لوگ حقیقی زندگی میں وقت کا تجربہ کیسے کرتے ہیں؟ کیوں یا کیوں نہیں؟“
کتاب کا “About the Poet” box (p.73) — poora, lafz-ba-lafz maloomat: “Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822) was an influential English Romantic poet known for his radical ideas and lyrical poetry. His works often explored themes of nature, politics, and the power of imagination. Some of his most famous poems include ‘Ozymandias,’ ‘To a Skylark,’ and ‘Prometheus Unbound.’ Shelley's life was marked by controversy, as he was often critical of societal norms and institutions. His works continue to be celebrated for their lyrical beauty and philosophical depth.”
No more is added here: the unit prints no other biographical details, so this page invents none. Note the book's spelling “Bysshe” (not “Bysshe” misspelled variants) and the dates 1792–1822 for MCQs.
Questions below ARE the book's own practice from this unit (book pp.74–79): Reading and Critical Thinking questions, the unit's own MCQs, central-idea and precis tasks — with answers.
نیچے دیے گئے سوالات کتاب کی اپنی مشق ہیں، اسی یونٹ سے (کتاب صفحہ 74-79): ریڈنگ اور تنقیدی سوچ کے سوالات، یونٹ کے اپنے MCQs، مرکزی خیال اور خلاصے کے کام — جوابات کے ساتھ۔
Answer: Time itself — vast, deep, impossible to understand or measure, whose waves are years and whose waters carry human sorrow. وقت خود — وسیع، گہرا، سمجھنے یا ناپنے سے باہر، جس کی لہریں سال ہیں اور جس کا پانی انسانی غم اٹھائے ہوئے ہے۔
Answer: 'Waves are years', 'shoreless flood', 'claspest the limits of mortality', 'sick of prey, yet howling on for more', 'vomitest thy wrecks', 'treacherous in calm, and terrible in storm'. ”waves are years“، ”shoreless flood“، ”claspest the limits of mortality“، ”sick of prey, yet howling on for more“، ”vomitest thy wrecks“، ”treacherous in calm, and terrible in storm“۔
Answer: A sea without a shore has no boundary or end — so time has no limit, no safe landing, no escape: every life is enclosed by it, from birth to death. بغیر ساحل کا سمندر بے حد و بے انتہا ہے — اس لیے وقت کی کوئی حد نہیں، کوئی محفوظ کنارہ نہیں، کوئی فرار نہیں: ہر زندگی پیدائش سے موت تک اسی میں بند ہے۔
Answer: The tide's ebb and flow is the rising and falling of time itself; it 'claspest the limits of mortality' — human life begins and ends within time's movement, like the tide coming in and going out. جوار کا چڑھاؤ اتار خود وقت کا اٹھنا گرنا ہے؛ یہ ”mortality کی حدود کو گھیرے ہوئے ہے“ — انسانی زندگی وقت کی حرکت کے اندر شروع اور ختم ہوتی ہے، جیسے جوار کا آنا اور جانا۔
Answer: Dark and awe-filled (reflective and dark). Shelley creates it with sorrowful, violent diction — 'deep woe', 'human tears', 'howling', 'wrecks', 'inhospitable shore', 'treacherous', 'terrible' — and with the vast sea metaphor that dwarfs humanity. تاریک اور ہیبت زدہ (غور و فکر والا اور تاریک)۔ شیلی اسے غمگین، پرتشدد الفاظ سے بناتا ہے — ”deep woe“، ”human tears“، ”howling“، ”wrecks“، ”inhospitable shore“، ”treacherous“، ”terrible“ — اور وسیع سمندر کے استعارے سے جو انسانیت کو چھوٹا کر دیتا ہے۔
Answer: Time is addressed as 'Thou' and given a living body and actions: it is a sea with waters, it clasps, it is sick of prey yet howls for more, it vomits its wrecks, it is treacherous and terrible — a predator, not a clock. وقت کو ”Thou“ کہہ کر مخاطب کیا گیا ہے اور اسے زندہ جسم و افعال دیے گئے ہیں: یہ پانیوں والا سمندر ہے، یہ گھیرتا ہے، یہ شکار سے بیزار مگر مزید کے لیے چیختا ہے، یہ اپنا ملبہ اگلتا ہے، یہ دھوکے باز اور خوفناک ہے — ایک شکاری، گھڑی نہیں۔
Answer: Brackish water is part salt, part fresh — somewhat salty. Here the salt is 'the salt of human tears': time's waters are literally seasoned by centuries of human grief, so sorrow is part of time's very nature. کھارا پانی جزوی نمکین، جزوی میٹھا ہوتا ہے — کچھ نمکین۔ یہاں نمک ”انسانی آنسوؤں کا نمک“ ہے: وقت کے پانی صدیوں کے انسانی غم سے نمکین ہیں، اس لیے غم وقت کی فطرت کا حصہ ہے۔
Answer: Howling is a loud, mournful, animal cry: it makes time sound like a hungry beast that never stops hunting — 'sick of prey, yet howling on for more' — stressing relentlessness and destruction. چیخنا بلند، غمگین، حیوانی آواز ہے: یہ وقت کو ایک بھوکے درندے کی آواز دیتا ہے جو شکار کرنا کبھی نہیں روکتا — ”شکار سے بیزار، پھر بھی مزید کے لیے چیختا ہوا“ — جو بے رحمی اور تباہی پر زور دیتا ہے۔
Answer: 'Who shall put forth on thee, Unfathomable Sea?' — no one can safely set sail on time: humanity is helpless before it, and every voyage on it risks wreck. The question leaves us small and awestruck. ”Who shall put forth on thee, Unfathomable Sea?“ — کوئی بھی وقت پر محفوظ سفر نہیں کر سکتا: انسانیت اس کے سامنے بے بس ہے، اور اس پر ہر سفر تباہی کا خطرہ رکھتا ہے۔ سوال ہمیں چھوٹا اور ہیبت زدہ چھوڑ دیتا ہے۔
Answer: That time cannot be controlled, bargained with, or escaped: we can only recognize its power, feel awe and sorrow, and live knowing our mortality is held in its ebb and flow. کہ وقت کو قابو نہیں کیا جا سکتا، اس سے سودا نہیں ہو سکتا، اس سے فرار نہیں: ہم صرف اس کی طاقت کو پہچان سکتے ہیں، ہیبت و غم محسوس کر سکتے ہیں، اور یہ جانتے ہوئے جی سکتے ہیں کہ ہماری موت اس کے چڑھاؤ اتار میں بندھی ہے۔
Correct answer: (b) unfathomable sea. (b) ناقابل فہم سمندر۔
Correct answer: (b) the unpredictable nature of time (boundless, uncontrollable time — not a boundary). (b) وقت کی غیر متوقع فطرت (بے حد، ناقابل قابو وقت — حد نہیں)۔
Correct answer: (b) grief (salt of human tears). (b) غم (انسانی آنسوؤں کا نمک)۔
Correct answer: (c) the destructive and relentless nature of time. (c) وقت کی تباہ کن اور بے رحم فطرت۔
Correct answer: (b) Time is dangerous and deceptive. (b) وقت خطرناک اور دھوکے باز ہے۔
Answer: Central idea: time is a powerful, uncontrollable force affecting all humanity. Development: the sea metaphor grows — waves = years, waters = tears, flood = shoreless, predator howling for more, wrecks vomited on an inhospitable shore, treacherous in calm / terrible in storm — ending in the question 'Who shall put forth on thee?'
Answer: Centre: TIME = Unfathomable Sea. Branches: (1) Waves = years; (2) Waters = brackish, salt of tears → grief; (3) Shoreless flood → no boundary, mortality; (4) Predator → howling, wrecks, treacherous/terrible; (5) Tone → dark, awe-filled; (6) Question → human helplessness. Reveal: every branch points to the same message — time is vast, sorrowful, destructive and unstoppable.
Answer: Sample precis (your own words are equally correct if they keep the core): 'Shelley compares time to a vast, unfathomable sea whose waves are years and whose salty waters hold human tears. This shoreless flood surrounds human life and, like a relentless predator, wrecks all it touches, being treacherous in calm and terrible in storm. The poem therefore presents time as an uncontrollable, destructive force before which humanity is helpless.'
This chapter is Shelley's poem 'Time', in which time is an unfathomable sea: waves are years, waters are brackish with human tears, and the closing question asks who will set out on that shoreless flood. It covers the poem glossary, the theme of relentless, awe-filled time, precis and formal style, and the About the Poet box. The exercise has reading questions, five MCQs and central idea, mind map and precis work.
Revision guidance: First fix the sea metaphor part by part (waves, waters, shore, ebb/flow), then the five glossary words. For precis, practise cutting the poem's description to its essential ideas in your own words — copying lines loses marks.
