Heat always flows from a hotter body to a colder one, but it has three different ways of travelling. This chapter explains conduction through solids, convection currents in liquids and gases, and radiation that needs no medium at all — plus the greenhouse effect that keeps our Earth warm.
Conduction is the transfer of heat through a substance without the substance itself moving. When one end of a metal rod is heated, its particles vibrate faster and pass energy to their neighbours, and in metals free electrons also carry energy quickly along the rod. That is why metals are good conductors and why a metal spoon in hot soup soon feels hot. Wood, plastic, glass and air are poor conductors, called insulators, because they have no free electrons and their particles pass energy on slowly. The rate of conduction is greater for a better conductor, a larger cross-section, a bigger temperature difference and a thinner layer.
Convection is the transfer of heat by the actual movement of a fluid. When part of a liquid or gas is heated, it expands, becomes less dense and rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks to take its place. This loop is a convection current. It is how a whole room warms from one heater, how water boils in a pot, and how sea breezes (day: cool air from sea to land) and land breezes (night: cool air from land to sea) form. Birds and glider pilots ride rising warm air, called thermals, and stay up for hours without flapping. Convection cannot happen in solids because their particles cannot flow.
Radiation is heat transfer by electromagnetic waves, mainly infrared, and it needs no medium — that is how the Sun's heat crosses empty space to reach us. Every object emits and absorbs radiation all the time. The Leslie's cube experiment shows that a dull black surface is the best absorber and the best emitter of radiation, while a shiny silver surface is the poorest at both. That is why solar panels and car radiators are dark, why light-coloured clothes feel cooler in summer, and why a hot body in a cool room cools down: it radiates more energy than it absorbs until both reach the same temperature.
The greenhouse effect is a natural warming process. Short-wave radiation from the Sun passes through the atmosphere and warms the Earth's surface; the Earth then radiates longer-wave infrared radiation, some of which is absorbed and re-emitted by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour. This traps heat and keeps the Earth's average temperature liveable. When human activities increase these gases, the enhanced greenhouse effect traps extra heat, raising global temperatures, melting ice, raising sea levels and disturbing weather patterns.
These are تھے official exercise questions of PECTAA Class 10 Physics, Chapter 11 (Transfer of Thermal Energy), with answers.
1. Which method of heat transfer requires direct contact between particles?
Answer: Conduction passes heat from particle to particle without the material flowing.
2. What causes convection currents in liquids and gases?
Answer: Warm fluid becomes less dense and rises; cool fluid sinks — that loop is the current.
3. The natural phenomenon caused by convection currents is:
Answer: Unequal heating of land and sea drives the daily breeze cycle.
4. How does heat transfer occur through radiation?
Answer: Radiation is electromagnetic waves, so it crosses vacuum too.
5. The surface which absorbs and emits the most radiation is:
Answer: Dull black surfaces are the best absorbers and emitters (Leslie's cube).
6. What is the role of the greenhouse effect in Earth's temperature regulation?
Answer: Greenhouse gases absorb outgoing infrared and keep Earth warm enough for life.
7. The Sun's heat reaches the Earth:
Answer: Space is a vacuum, so only radiation can carry the Sun's heat to us.
Answer: Conduction, convection and radiation.
Answer: Metals have free electrons that carry energy quickly through the metal, in addition to particle vibrations. Non-metals lack free electrons, so they conduct slowly.
Answer: Heated fluid expands, becomes less dense and rises, while cooler fluid sinks — a convection current carries the heat with the moving fluid.
Answer: During the day land heats faster than the sea, so air over land rises and cool sea air moves in (sea breeze). At night land cools faster, so the flow reverses (land breeze).
Answer: They ride thermals — rising columns of warm air — gaining height without flapping or engine power, then glide onward.
Answer: Radiation is energy carried by electromagnetic waves, mainly infrared. It needs no medium, so it travels through vacuum as well as air.
Answer: A dull black surface is a good absorber and a good emitter; a shiny surface reflects most radiation instead of absorbing it, and so emits poorly too.
Answer: Greenhouse gases absorb some outgoing infrared radiation and re-emit it, trapping enough heat to keep Earth's average temperature steady and liveable.
Answer: Because emission depends on the surface, not only on temperature: dull black surfaces are good emitters, shiny surfaces are poor emitters. At the same temperature the black face therefore radiates more.
Answer: Convection needs flow, and solid particles cannot flow — they only vibrate. In liquids and gases, although conduction is poor, the fluid itself moves, so convection currents carry heat far faster than conduction alone could.
Answer: They use thermals: the Sun warms the ground, warm air rises in a column, and the bird or glider circles inside the rising air, gaining height from the convection current without spending energy.
Answer: The hot object radiates more energy than it absorbs from its cooler surroundings, and loses heat by conduction and convection too, until its temperature equals the room's — thermal equilibrium.
Answer: In a fluid, heating lowers density, so warm fluid rises and cool fluid sinks, setting up a current. The same process on a large scale drives sea and land breezes and global wind patterns, as the Sun heats different parts of Earth unevenly.
Answer: Radiation needs no medium and travels as electromagnetic waves, while conduction needs particle contact and convection needs a flowing fluid. Examples: feeling the Sun's warmth, a heater warming your face, a fire's glow. Dull black surfaces absorb and emit best; shiny white surfaces reflect and emit least.
Answer: Naturally, greenhouse gases trap enough outgoing infrared to keep Earth warm. Extra gases from burning fossil fuels enhance the effect, causing global warming, melting ice caps, sea-level rise, stronger storms and shifting rainfall.
Answer: Dark, rough (dull) surfaces absorb and emit radiation strongly; light, smooth, shiny surfaces reflect most radiation and emit weakly. This is shown by Leslie's cube and explains dark solar panels and light summer clothes.
Answer: A heater warms nearby air, which rises; cool air flows in to replace it, and the circulation spreads warmth through the whole room. The same current warms a pot of water from bottom to top.
