ENGLISH

Light lets us see the world, but it also bends, bounces and splits into colours. This chapter covers reflection and refraction, how the eye forms images (and what goes wrong in long sight), and why a prism — but not a glass slab — spreads white light into a rainbow.

1. Reflection of Light
🏷 Tags: reflection, normal, angle of incidence, angle of reflection, mirrors
ENGLISH

When light strikes a smooth surface it bounces back — reflection. The normal is a line drawn at right angles to the surface at the point of incidence. The two laws of reflection are: the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection (i = r), and the incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal all lie in the same plane. Smooth surfaces give regular reflection (a clear image in a mirror); rough surfaces scatter light in all directions, which is diffuse reflection.

Incident rayNormalReflected ray: i = r
2. Refraction of Light
🏷 Tags: refraction, Snell law, refractive index, total internal reflection, critical angle
ENGLISH

When light passes from one medium to another it changes speed and bends — refraction. Going into a denser medium it bends towards the normal; going into a rarer medium it bends away. Snell's law states n = sin i / sin r, and the refractive index n = speed of light in vacuum / speed in the medium (water: 1.33, glass: about 1.5). When light travels from a denser to a rarer medium, there is a critical angle C beyond which no refraction is possible: all the light reflects inside, called total internal reflection, with sin C = 1/n. Optical fibres and the sparkle of diamonds use it. For n = 1.7, sin C = 1/1.7, so C ≈ 36°.

3. Image Formation in a Normal Eye
🏷 Tags: eye, retina, lens, long sight, short sight, correction
ENGLISH

In a normal eye, light is refracted mainly by the cornea and fine-tuned by the crystalline lens to form a real, inverted image on the retina at the back of the eye; the brain flips it the right way up. The lens changes shape (accommodation) to focus near and far objects. In long-sightedness (hypermetropia) the eyeball is too short or the lens too weak, so near images focus behind the retina — corrected with a convex lens. In short-sightedness the image falls in front of the retina and a concave lens corrects it.

Light inLens focuses on retina
4. Dispersion of Light by Prism
🏷 Tags: dispersion, prism, spectrum, rainbow, wavelength
ENGLISH

White light is a mixture of colours. When it enters a prism, each colour refracts by a different amount because the refractive index depends on wavelength: violet bends most and red least, so the light spreads into a spectrum — violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red. A plane glass slab also refracts light twice, but its two faces are parallel, so the colours recombine into white light on exit — that is why a slab cannot disperse like a prism. Rainbows form the same way in raindrops.

White lightPrism spreads coloursViolet bends most, red least
📝 Exercise Questions — with Answers📝

These are تھے official exercise questions of PECTAA Class 10 Physics, Chapter 14 (Light), with answers.

Section A: Multiple Choice Questions

1. What is the critical angle for a medium with refractive index 1.7?

Answer / جواب

Answer: sin C = 1/n = 1/1.7 = 0.588, so C ≈ 36°.

2. What occurs if incidence angle goes beyond the critical angle?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Beyond the critical angle no refraction is possible, so all light reflects inside.

3. When refractive index of a material increases, then increases:

Answer / جواب

Answer: A higher n means light slows more and bends more at the boundary.

4. Which statement best describes the phenomenon of total internal reflection?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Total internal reflection is complete reflection at the boundary, with no refracted ray.

5. A ray of light travelling from water to air bends:

Answer / جواب

Answer: Going from denser water to rarer air, light speeds up and bends away from the normal.

Section B: Short Answer Questions
1. What happens when light passes from air to water?

Answer: It slows down (from 3 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹ to about 2.25 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹) and bends towards the normal, because water is denser than air.

2. Define refractive index. What is the refractive index of air and water?

Answer: Refractive index n = speed of light in vacuum / speed of light in the medium. For air n ≈ 1.00 and for water n = 1.33.

3. Write Snell's law and define the terms used in the equation.

Answer: Snell's law: n = sin i / sin r, where i is the angle of incidence, r is the angle of refraction, and n is the refractive index of the second medium relative to the first.

4. Define total internal reflection. What conditions are required for it to occur?

Answer: Total internal reflection is the complete reflection of light inside a denser medium at its boundary. Conditions: light must travel from a denser to a rarer medium, and the angle of incidence must exceed the critical angle.

5. What is long-sightedness? Discuss its causes.

Answer: Long-sightedness (hypermetropia) is the inability to see near objects clearly. It is caused by an eyeball that is too short or a lens that cannot bulge enough, so near images focus behind the retina; a convex lens corrects it.

Section C: Constructed Response Questions
1. When a pencil is partially dipped in water, it appears bent or broken. What principle of light explains this phenomenon, and how does it relate to changes in speed?

Answer: Refraction: light from the submerged part speeds up as it leaves water for air and bends away from the normal, so the eye sees the pencil displaced from its true position — the change of speed causes the change of direction.

2. Why can a prism separate white light into its component colours while a plane glass slab cannot, even though both cause refraction?

Answer: In a prism the two faces are angled, so each colour's different bending adds up and the spectrum stays spread. In a slab the faces are parallel, so the second refraction cancels the first and the colours recombine into white.

3. Why does light undergo total internal reflection when travelling from water to air at a certain angle but not the other way around?

Answer: Total internal reflection needs light going from denser to rarer medium, where bending away from the normal can reach 90°. From air to water light bends towards the normal, so it always refracts into the water.

4. What is meant by the critical angle, and how is it related to total internal reflection?

Answer: The critical angle C is the angle of incidence in the denser medium for which the angle of refraction is 90° (the ray runs along the boundary). Beyond C, no refraction is possible and total internal reflection occurs; sin C = 1/n.

5. A diver sees a fish underwater closer than it really is. Why does this happen?

Answer: Light from the fish bends away from the normal as it leaves water for air, so the diver's eye traces the rays back in straight lines to a shallower, apparent position — the fish appears closer (and higher) than it really is.

Section D: Comprehensive Questions
1. Explain the terms; normal, angle of incidence and angle of reflection in the context of light reflection. Provide a diagram to illustrate these terms.

Answer: The normal is the perpendicular to the surface at the point of incidence. The angle of incidence is between the incoming ray and the normal; the angle of reflection is between the outgoing ray and the normal. By the laws of reflection they are equal, and all three lines lie in one plane.

2. Define the terms critical angle and total internal reflection. Explain the conditions required for total internal reflection to occur.

Answer: Critical angle: the incidence angle in a denser medium giving a 90° refraction angle. Total internal reflection: complete reflection inside the denser medium when the incidence angle exceeds C. Conditions: denser-to-rarer travel, and incidence angle greater than C.

3. Derive the equation; (n = 1/sin C) for the refractive index in terms of the critical angle C. Include all steps and assumptions.

Answer: Apply Snell's law at the boundary for light leaving the denser medium (index n) into air (index ≈ 1): n sin i = 1 × sin r. At the critical angle, i = C and the refracted ray runs along the boundary, so r = 90° and sin r = 1. Then n sin C = 1, giving n = 1/sin C. Assumptions: a sharp boundary, a single wavelength, and the rarer medium's index taken as 1.

4. Explain the phenomenon of total internal reflection. Also give its two practical applications.

Answer: When light in a denser medium hits the boundary beyond the critical angle, it reflects completely instead of refracting out. Applications: optical fibres carrying signals and images around bends, and the brilliant sparkle of a cut diamond.

5. What is long-sightedness? Discuss its causes.

Answer: Long-sightedness is clear distance vision but blurred near vision. Causes: a short eyeball or a lens that has lost flexibility (often with age), so near rays focus behind the retina; corrected with a converging (convex) lens.

Section E: Numerical Problems
1. The speed of light in water is 2.25 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹. Calculate the refractive index of water.

Answer: n = c/v = 3.00 × 10⁸ / 2.25 × 10⁸ = 1.33.

2. A light ray in air (n₁ = 1.0) strikes a glass surface (n₂ = 1.5) at an angle of incidence 30°. Find the angle of refraction inside the glass.

Answer: sin r = sin i / n = sin 30°/1.5 = 0.5/1.5 = 0.333, so r ≈ 19.5°.

3. A ray of light travels from air into an unknown liquid. The angle of incidence in air is 45°, and the angle of refraction in the liquid is 30°. Calculate the refractive index of the liquid.

Answer: n = sin 45°/sin 30° = 0.707/0.5 = 1.41.

4. A ray of light passes from air into a liquid. The angle of incidence in air is 50°, and the angle of refraction inside the liquid is 32°. The speed of sound in air is 340 m s⁻¹ and in the same liquid is 1500 m s⁻¹. Calculate: (a) the refractive index of the liquid (b) the speed of light in the liquid.

Answer: (a) n = sin 50°/sin 32° = 0.766/0.530 ≈ 1.45. (b) v = c/n = 3.00 × 10⁸/1.45 ≈ 2.08 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹. (The sound speeds in the question are not needed for the light calculation.)

5. Light travels inside a glass block of refractive index n = 1.6. It strikes the glass–air boundary. Calculate the critical angle for total internal reflection.

Answer: sin C = 1/n = 1/1.6 = 0.625, so C ≈ 38.68°.
