Every noun answers the question 'what is its name?' Point at things around you and name them: teacher is a person, school is a place, cat is an animal, book is a thing. If it has a name, it is a noun — that is the only test you need.
Common nouns are everyday names shared by many: boy, city, dog. Proper nouns are special names for one particular person or place, and they always wear a capital at the start: Ali, Lahore, Pakistan. Spot the capital, and you have spotted a proper noun.
A verb is the doing part — the word that moves the sentence. In 'Ali runs', take away 'runs' and nothing happens any more; the sentence is just a name standing still. Ask 'what is he doing?' and the answer is always the verb.
Learn verbs in small families so they stick: go goes with went, eat goes with ate, play goes with played. Say each pair out loud three times, then make one sentence with each — that is how verb forms move from the page into your memory.
Picture note — Example: Words: Ali / reads / book • Sentence: Ali reads a book. • Noun Ali, verb reads
Words: Ali / reads / book • Sentence: Ali reads a book. • Noun Ali, verb reads
Build a sentence like building a small house: first the capital letter as the door, then a noun to say who, then a verb to say what they do, then a full stop as the roof. 'The cat sits on the mat.' has all four parts, which is why it feels complete.
Check your own sentences with three fingers: one for the capital, one for the noun-plus-verb pair, one for the end mark. Questions end with '?' and strong feelings or orders can end with '!' — but a plain telling sentence always ends with a full stop.
Plural is just a counting word: one thing is singular, more than one is plural. Most words simply take -s: one cat, two cats; one boy, two boys. Say the word, add the s sound, and you have said the plural.
Watch out for the hissy endings: after s, x, ch or sh, add -es so the word can still be said easily — box becomes boxes, watch becomes watches. And a few words change completely instead of adding anything: child becomes children, man becomes men, foot becomes feet. Those you simply learn by heart, like friends' names.
Revise by playing noun-or-verb: someone says a word, you say 'noun' or 'verb' and give a reason in one line — 'book: noun, it names a thing' or 'runs: verb, it shows action'. Ten quick rounds will fix the difference better than reading the page twice.
Finish with plurals: write one word from each rule — one -s word, one -es word, one changed word — and one sentence with a capital, a noun, a verb and a full stop. Four small jobs, and the chapter is revised.

This chapter builds grammar from the ground up: nouns that name a person, place, animal or thing, verbs that show action, sentences that join a noun and a verb between a capital and a full stop, and singular and plural rules including -s, -es and changed forms like child to children. The exercise is 5 multiple-choice, 4 short-answer, 2 long-answer and 1 think-and-answer SLO practice questions with the masters' answers.
Revision guidance: Play ten rounds of noun-or-verb with a friend, write one plural from each rule, and build one perfect sentence with the three-finger check — capital, noun-plus-verb, end mark — before the exercise.
