This chapter is SLO-based practice material for Class 3 Mathematics (Session 2026–27). It is NOT a copy of the official textbook exercise: no official Class 3 Mathematics book was available on file, so no book page numbers are claimed and no book text is reproduced. The chapter name and topics follow the Punjab (PCTB / SNC) Class 3 book list, and every question below was written from the chapter’s learning outcomes so students can practise. Answers marked here were checked arithmetically; derived workings are labelled as worked steps.
We count things all day long — 1 apple in your hand, 10 fingers, 100 rupees in a shop. In Class 3 we learn to read and write numbers all the way up to 1000. The trick is to read them slowly, in parts: one hundred twenty-three is written as 123.
Every digit has a place, and the place tells you what it is worth. Count from the right: the first digit is ones, the next is tens, and the next is hundreds. So in 345, the 3 means 3 hundreds (300), the 4 means 4 tens (40) and the 5 means 5 ones (5). Put together: 345 = 300 + 40 + 5.
When two numbers stand side by side, how do you tell which is bigger? Look at the hundreds digit first. The number with the bigger hundreds digit wins straight away. If the hundreds are equal, look at the tens, and if those are equal too, look at the ones.
We write it with signs: > means greater than, < means less than and = means equal. Putting numbers from smallest to biggest is called ascending order, and biggest to smallest is descending order. Try it: 462 and 429 both have 4 hundreds, but 6 tens beats 2 tens, so 462 > 429.
A pattern is a rule that keeps repeating. Once you spot the rule, the rest of the numbers fall into place by themselves. Count by 2s and you get 2, 4, 6, 8. Count by 5s and you get 5, 10, 15, 20. Count by 10s and you get 10, 20, 30.
So never guess the next number — find the rule first. Ask yourself: are we adding the same number each time, or taking away? In 3, 6, 9, 12 the rule is +3, so the next number is 15. In 100, 90, 80 the rule is −10, so the next number is 70.
There is a very quick way to tell even from odd: look only at the last digit. If a number ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8, it is even — like 2, 4, 10 or 100. If it ends in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9, it is odd — like 1, 3, 11 or 99. You never need to read the whole number.
Roman numbers are a different game: they use letters instead of digits. I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50 and C = 100. Put letters together and add them up: VII is 5 + 1 + 1 = 7, and XII is 10 + 1 + 1 = 12.
1 What is the place value of 7 in 472?
Answer: (b) 70. The 7 sits in the tens place, and 7 tens are worth 70 — not 7, and not 700.
2 Which number is the biggest?
Answer: (c) 893. Compare hundreds first: 8 hundreds beats 3 hundreds, so 893 is bigger than all the rest.
3 What comes next in 3, 6, 9, 12, …?
Answer: (c) 15. The rule is +3 each time (3+3=6, 6+3=9, 9+3=12), so 12+3=15.
4 Which number is odd?
Answer: (d) 57. It ends in 7, and 7 is an odd digit. The others end in 4, 6 and 8, so they are even.
5 Roman number XIV means:
Answer: (a) 14. X = 10 and IV = 4, so 10 + 4 = 14.
Answer: Eight hundred five. The 8 is 8 hundreds, the 0 means no tens, and the 5 is 5 ones.
Answer: 432. Hundreds 400, tens 30, ones 2 — put the digits in their places: 4 in hundreds, 3 in tens, 2 in ones.
Answer: 125, 251, 512. Compare hundreds: 1 hundred is smallest, then 2 hundreds, then 5 hundreds. 125
Answer: Even, because it ends in 6, and 6 is an even digit. The last digit alone decides it.
Answer: Sara has more. Hundreds are equal (3 = 3), so move to tens: Sara has 5 tens and Ali has 4 tens, and 5 > 4, so 354 > 345.
Answer: Rule −10. Each number is 10 less than the one before (200−10=190, 190−10=180), so next: 180−10=170, then 170−10=160.
Answer: 953. To make the biggest number, put the biggest digit in the most valuable place: 9 in hundreds, then 5 in tens, then 3 in ones. Any other order wastes the 9 on a smaller place.
In this chapter you learned to read and write numbers up to 1000, to split every number into hundreds, tens and ones, to compare numbers place by place, to find the rule in a pattern, and to tell even from odd and read Roman numbers. Remember: compare hundreds first, then tens, then ones — and in a pattern, find the rule before you write the next number.
Revision guidance: Revision tip: pick any 3-digit number on a shop board or a bus and say its hundreds, tens and ones aloud, then write it in words. Five numbers a day and place value will never trouble you again.
