This unit is about Manners. It begins with the poem Whole Duty of Children by Robert Louis Stevenson: a child should always say what is true, and speak when he is spoken to, and behave mannerly at table, at least as far as he is able. Good manners make us liked and respected everywhere.
The poem says: A child should always say what is true, and speak when he is spoken to, and behave mannerly at table, at least as far as he is able. Before and after a meal, we should wash our hands, and we should not eat too many chocolates or speak with our mouth full.
The main idea of the poem is simple: good manners are a child's whole duty. A mannerly child is loved by parents, teachers and friends, and good manners open the door to respect and friendship.
نظم کہتی ہے: A child should always say what is true, and speak when he is spoken to, and behave mannerly at table, at least as far as he is able.
Behave means to act in a certain way. Mannerly means in a way that shows good manners. At least means not less than, and able means to have the skill to do something.
Similes compare a word or thing with another thing using the words as or like. Examples from poems: An emerald is as green as grass. A ruby is as red as blood. A sapphire shines as blue as heaven. A flint lies in the mud. Use the given similes in your own sentences.
Behave یعنی کسی خاص انداز سے پیش آنا۔ Mannerly یعنی اچھے آداب کے ساتھ۔ At least یعنی اس سے کم نہیں، اور able یعنی کچھ کرنے کی صلاحیت رکھنا۔
تشبیہات (Similes) کسی لفظ یا چیز کا دوسری چیز سے as یا like سے موازنہ کرتی ہیں۔ نظموں کی مثالیں: An emerald is as green as grass. A ruby is as red as blood. A sapphire shines as blue as heaven. A flint lies in the mud. دی گئی تشبیہات اپنے جملوں میں استعمال کرو۔
The -ed ending of past verbs is pronounced in three ways. /d/ after vowel sounds and b, g, l, m, n, r, v, z: loved, played, cleaned. /t/ after p, k, f, s, sh, ch: watched, helped, washed. /id/ after t and d: wanted, decided, started. Say the words and write them in the right columns.
In speaking, practise the dialogue between Sidra and her mother about breakfast and hygiene: Good morning, Mama. Good morning, dear Sidra. Mama, shall I come and help you prepare breakfast for me? Yes, I have brushed my teeth, but I have not taken a shower yet. Go and take a shower first, then I will serve you breakfast. We should always take care of our personal hygiene.
Good morning, Mama. Good morning, dear Sidra. Mama, shall I come and help you prepare breakfast for me? Yes, I have brushed my teeth, but I have not taken a shower yet. Go and take a shower first, then I will serve you breakfast. We should always take care of our personal hygiene.
Possessive pronouns show ownership: I had bought my new phone. We have sold our old house. Ali is working on his computer. We have to look after our parents. She has lost her handbag. The parrot is eating its food. Make sentences using the possessive pronouns given above.
Use should and should not to give advice: You should listen to your teacher carefully. Children should not watch a lot of television. You should not make fun of others. Children should not make fun of others. Joining words join sentences: and, but, or (A child should speak and behave mannerly. Do you want to eat pancakes or eggs for breakfast? My mother bought fruit and vegetables from the market.). Adverbs of manner tell how something happens: Sara speaks slowly. Ahmed plays the piano beautifully. They walked in the park quickly. Speak to your elders politely.
ملکیتی ضمیر ملکیت ظاہر کرتے ہیں: I had bought my new phone. We have sold our old house. Ali is working on his computer. We have to look after our parents. She has lost her handbag. The parrot is eating its food. اوپر دیے گئے ملکیتی ضمیروں سے جملے بناؤ۔
Should اور should not نصیحت کے لیے ہیں: You should listen to your teacher carefully. Children should not watch a lot of television. You should not make fun of others. Children should not make fun of others. جوڑنے والے الفاظ جملوں کو جوڑتے ہیں: and, but, or (A child should speak and behave mannerly. Do you want to eat pancakes or eggs for breakfast? My mother bought fruit and vegetables from the market.)۔ طریقے کے متعلق فعل بتاتے ہیں کہ کام کیسے ہوتا ہے: Sara speaks slowly. Ahmed plays the piano beautifully. They walked in the park quickly. Speak to your elders politely.
The central idea of a poem is the main thought the poet wants to give. Write the central idea of the poem Whole Duty of Children in your notebook: a child should always speak the truth, behave mannerly and show good manners at all times.
Then list four pairs of rhyming words and write a simple poem about Brushing Your Teeth using them (for example please → tease, turn → learn, find → kind, fuss → us). Use correct capitalisation and punctuation in your poem.
