This chapter is about Ecosystem. An ecosystem is a place where living things and non-living things live together and depend on each other. Plants are producers because they make food. Animals that eat plants or other animals are consumers. A food chain shows who eats whom, starting from a plant.
Think of a garden, a pond or a field. Everything there — the plants, the animals, the soil, the water and the air — belongs to one ecosystem, because the living and the non-living things live together and depend on each other. Nothing in that place lives alone: the plants need soil and water, and the animals need the plants.
The food story always starts with a plant. Plants are producers because they make food, and animals are consumers because they eat plants or other animals. Put the eaters in order, starting from the plant, and you get a food chain — a simple line that shows who eats whom.
Step by step: first, pick a place — a garden or a pond. Next, sort what you see into living things and non-living things, and notice how they depend on each other. Last, trace a food chain from a plant: who eats the plant, and who eats that eater? That line is the food chain.
An ecosystem is not one animal or one plant — it is living and non-living things in a place, living together. The word covers the whole neighbourhood of nature, soil and water included. A producer is a living thing that makes its own food, like a plant; without producers, no food chain could even start.
A food chain is a line showing who eats whom in nature. It is always read from the plant onwards, because the plant is where the food begins. Say the three meanings slowly, then point to each word in the food-chain example of the next section.
Here is the chapter's own food chain, and it is worth learning in order: grass → goat → lion. The goat eats grass, and the lion eats the goat. Every link matters — take the grass away and the goat has nothing to eat, take the goat away and the lion has nothing to hunt.
Now build one more chain of your own, always starting from a plant, and tell it to a friend in your own words. If your chain does not start from a plant, check it again: in this chapter, the food story begins with a producer.
An ecosystem gives us things we cannot buy in a shop: clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and food that is safe to eat. When an ecosystem is damaged, all three are at risk — dirty water and polluted air hurt every living thing in that place, not just one animal.
That is why protecting ecosystems is really protecting ourselves. Keeping water clean, not wasting food, and not harming plants all keep the whole system — and everyone living in it — safe.
Time to test yourself with the book closed. Ecosystem — living and non-living things in a place, living together. Producer — a living thing that makes its own food, like a plant. Food chain — a line showing who eats whom in nature. Three words, three meanings — can you say them in order?
Then tell the main idea in three sentences: what an ecosystem is, who makes the food and who eats it, and what a food chain shows. Finish by saying the grass → goat → lion chain without looking.

Protecting ecosystems keeps clean air, clean water and food safe for all living things.
Start with the example: Grass → goat → lion is a food chain: the goat eats grass and the lion eats the goat. Then explain the key words: Ecosystem means living and non-living things in a place, living together; Producer means a living thing that makes its own food, like a plant.

Revision tip: Draw your own food chain starting from a plant in your street or garden, with three links. Then name one living and one non-living thing in that ecosystem and say how they depend on each other.
