⚠️ Gap note — Chapter 5: Chapter 5 has no source master in the library, so it is not built here and nothing has been invented for it. This chapter's next link therefore goes straight to Chapter 6.
This chapter is about Matter and its Characteristics. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. It has three states: solid, liquid and gas. Solids keep their shape, liquids take the shape of their container, and gases spread everywhere. Heating can melt a solid and cooling can freeze a liquid.
Everything you can touch or pour is matter, and the test is simple: does it have mass, and does it take up space? If yes to both, it is matter — the book, the water in your glass and even the air in the room all pass the test, because air too has mass and fills space.
Matter comes in three states, and each behaves differently. Solids keep their shape, like a stone on the table. Liquids take the shape of their container, like water in a glass. Gases spread everywhere, like steam filling a kitchen. Heat moves matter between states: heating can melt a solid, and cooling can freeze a liquid.
Step by step: first, test it — has it mass and does it take up space? If yes, it is matter. Next, name its state: does it keep its shape (solid), take the container's shape (liquid), or spread everywhere (gas)? Last, ask what heat or cold would do to it: heating melts a solid, cooling freezes a liquid.
Matter is the biggest word in the chapter: anything that has mass and takes up space. It is the name for all stuff, solid, liquid or gas. A solid is matter with a fixed shape and volume, like a stone — you can pick it up and it keeps its shape in your hand.
Melting is the change that heat brings: changing from solid to liquid by heating. Ice melting into water is the example to keep in mind, because it shows all three words at work — matter, in solid form, changing by melting.
Water is the best teacher of this chapter, because you can watch it change states in your own kitchen. Ice is solid water — hard, cold, and keeping its shape. Warm it and it melts into liquid water, which flows and takes the shape of its container.
Heat it more and the liquid becomes steam, a gas that spreads everywhere and cannot be held in an open hand. One substance, three states, changed only by heating and cooling — if you understand ice, water and steam, you understand the whole chapter.
Knowing matter is not just for exams — it runs the kitchen and the workshop. Cooking is really changing states on purpose: melting, boiling and freezing food to make it safe and tasty. Storing food works the same way, because cold slows changes down and keeps food fresh longer.
Building depends on it too: a builder must know which materials keep their shape like solids and which flow like liquids. And behind all of it, understanding matter means understanding the world around us — why ice melts on a hot day and why steam rises from a kettle.
Book closed, three words: Matter — anything that has mass and takes up space. Solid — matter with a fixed shape and volume, like a stone. Melting — changing from solid to liquid by heating. Say them in order, then add the two facts that complete the picture: liquids take their container's shape, gases spread everywhere.
Then tell the main idea in three sentences: what matter is, what its three states do differently, and what heating and cooling do to it. Finish with the water example — ice, water, steam — said in one breath, in the right order.

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space, and it has three states: solid, liquid and gas. Solids keep their shape, liquids take the shape of their container, and gases spread everywhere; heating can melt a solid and cooling can freeze a liquid. The key words are matter, solid (fixed shape and volume, like a stone) and melting (solid to liquid by heating), and the daily example is ice melting into water and then becoming steam. Knowing matter helps us cook, store food, build things and understand the world around us.
Revision tip: Sort ten things in your kitchen into solid, liquid and gas, and say why each one belongs where you put it. Then watch ice melt in a glass and describe each stage in your own words.
