📌 Source note: This chapter was built from the official PCTB Class 4 General Science book (English Medium) PDF: Chapter 5 opens on book page 56, the lesson runs over pages 57–63 and the book exercise is on pages 64–66, all read from the official PDF. No book pictures are reproduced here; every diagram below is newly drawn. One book MCQ is reworded: the book's MCQ 5 asks what electrical energy can be transformed into and lists heat, light and sound as three correct options, so it is asked here in its NOT form with the same four options.
This chapter is about Forms of Energy and Energy Transfer. Energy is the ability to do work. The Sun, flowing water, wind, coal, oil, gas and wood are sources of energy, and one form of energy can change into another — for example, in a dam, flowing water turns turbines that make electricity.
Energy is the ability to do work. Human beings and animals use energy for their movements, and machines use energy to run. We observe energy as light in lamps, as heat in heaters and as sound in doorbells.
The Sun is the biggest source of energy for the Earth. Other sources are flowing water, wind, coal, oil, natural gas and wood. Coal, oil and gas are fuels: they are burned to get heat and electricity.
One form of energy can be transformed into another form. For example, one way of generating electricity is through fast-flowing water. In a hydroelectric dam, water stored in a high lake runs downhill, turns turbines through tunnels and the fast-running water turns the generators connected to the turbines to produce electricity.
In a thermal power station, coal or gas is burned to heat water and make steam. The steam turns turbines and the turbines run generators to produce electricity. So chemical energy of fuel becomes heat energy, then electrical energy.
Sources of energy like coal, oil and gas are limited resources on Earth. We are unable to increase the amounts of these resources, because they were made over millions of years. If we use them carelessly, they will finish soon and our needs will not be met.
That is why we should use energy responsibly: switch off lights and fans when they are not needed, use sunlight in the daytime and do not waste fuel. Saving energy today means our children will also have energy tomorrow.
Light is a form of energy that helps us to see things around us. The Sun, stars and lightning are natural sources of light, while a candle, lamp, torch and electric bulb are artificial sources. When light falls on an object, a shadow of that object is formed behind it, because light cannot pass through the object.
When light strikes a smooth shiny surface like a mirror, it bounces back: this is called reflection of light. After rain, when sunlight passes through water drops in the air, it divides into seven colours — red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet — and we see a rainbow.
Sound is a form of energy that is produced by vibration in an object. These vibrations reach our ears through the particles of the air, and in this way we hear sounds. Sound needs some medium to travel; most sounds reach us by travelling through air, and sound cannot travel through a vacuum, where there is no air.
Sound is also reflected, like light. When sound bounces back from an object at a certain distance and we hear it again, it is called an echo. A hard and smooth surface reflects sound better, and we must be at least about 17 metres away from the surface to hear a clear echo.
Heat is a form of energy that always travels from a hot object to a cold object. We use the term temperature to measure the hotness or coldness of an object. The instrument used to measure temperature is called a thermometer.
When the bulb of a thermometer touches a hot object, the mercury or alcohol in the bulb expands and rises in the glass tube. Doctors usually measure temperature in centigrade: the symbol is °C. Remember: the temperature of hot objects is higher than the temperature of cold objects, and heat flows from hot to cold, never the other way.
Electricity is produced by generators and supplied to our homes through wires. Cells and batteries are also sources of electrical energy. Electrical energy can easily be transformed into other forms of energy, like heat, light and sound — a heater gives heat, a bulb gives light and a loudspeaker gives sound.
The path of current is called an electric circuit. To make a simple electric circuit, fix a torch bulb in a holder, join a metal wire to the bulb with a cell and add a switch, as shown in the diagram. When the switch is turned ON, the path is complete and the bulb lights up; when it is OFF, the path is broken and the bulb does not light up.
The questions below follow the book's exercise: tick the correct answer, short answers, constructed response questions, an investigation and a project. Model answers are solved here.
MCQ 1: Which of the following is NOT a form of energy?
(c) Glass. Light, sound and heat are forms of energy; glass is a material, not a form of energy.
MCQ 2: We hear echo when sound:
(b) comes after bouncing back from a wall at a certain distance. Echo is the sound heard again after reflection.
MCQ 3: How many colours are there in sunlight?
(d) 7. Sunlight divides into seven colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
MCQ 4: If you take your hand first nearer to a lit lamp and then away from it, the shadow of your hand:
(c) will be larger — for the nearer move: bringing the hand nearer to the lamp makes its shadow larger; moving it away makes the shadow smaller again.
MCQ 5: Which of the following is NOT a form into which electrical energy can be transformed? (Book MCQ 5, reworded — see source note.)
(d) Plastic. Electrical energy can be changed into heat, light and sound, but not into plastic.
Light can travel through a vacuum (sunlight reaches us through space). Sound cannot travel through a vacuum because it needs a medium like air. Heat can travel through a vacuum by radiation — that is how the Sun's heat reaches the Earth.
Astronauts talk with the help of radio sets. Their voices are changed into radio waves, which can travel through a vacuum, and the radio changes the waves back into sound at the other end.
A mosquito's wings vibrate very fast when it flies. These vibrations travel through the air to our ears, and we sense them as a buzzing sound.
In a television set, electrical energy is transformed into light energy (the picture on the screen) and sound energy (the sound from the speakers).
We can see a rainbow after rain, when the Sun shines while water drops are still in the air. Sunlight passing through the drops divides into seven colours, and we see them as a rainbow.
Yes. The temperature will rise. A lighted bulb gives off heat as well as light, and heat flows from the hot bulb to the thermometer, so the mercury or alcohol in the thermometer expands and rises.
Heat always flows from hot to cold. So arrows point from your warm hand (37 °C) into the cold glass, and from the warm room air (30 °C) into the glass. No arrow points out of the cold water, because the water is colder than both.
Sidra's torch. The reflector is a smooth shiny surface that reflects the light forward in one direction, so more light reaches the wall. Without a reflector, Ali's light spreads in all directions and less of it reaches the wall.
The nail and the key. Both are made of metal, and metals are conductors, so current can pass through them and complete the circuit. The cotton bud, plastic pen, ice-cream stick and pencil (wood) are insulators and will not complete the circuit.
You need two paper cups, two small pieces of twig, string or thin wire (7 metres) and a pencil or nail for making holes. Make a hole in each cup, tie the string through the holes and pull it tight. When one person speaks into a cup, the cup vibrates, the vibrations travel along the tight string, and the other cup vibrates and gives out the sound — just like sound travelling through a medium.
Energy is the ability to do work. Its sources are the Sun, flowing water, wind, coal, oil, gas and wood. Energy changes form: water and fuel make electricity, light lets us see and makes shadows, reflection and rainbows, sound comes from vibration and returns as an echo, heat always flows from hot to cold, and a complete electric circuit makes a bulb light up. Because coal, oil and gas are limited, we must save energy.
Revision tip: Say the seven colours of the rainbow in order, then name three sources of energy and one way to save energy. Next, explain in one sentence each: echo, reflection and heat flow. Last, draw a simple circuit with battery, wire, switch and bulb and label its parts.
