This chapter is about Earth and its Resources. Most of the items we need, like food, clothes and houses, come from natural resources — things we get from the land, sea or air. There is no substitute for natural resources, so if people do not use them responsibly, they will finish soon.
If you look at the globe of the Earth, you will see that the areas in blue represent water and the areas in green or brown represent land. Almost 71% of the Earth's surface is water and the remaining 29% is land.
We are surrounded by air everywhere on Earth. We are unable to see air, but air is present everywhere around us: on the Earth's surface as well as in soil and water. Living things breathe this air to stay alive.
About 97% of the water present on Earth is in the oceans. The remaining 3% is present in rivers, streams and lakes. Rainwater is added to rivers and streams, and from there the water flows to lakes and oceans.
The snow falling on mountains also melts and joins rivers. This water also flows to rivers and lakes and finally falls into the rivers and oceans. So the water we drink and use comes to us through this journey from sky to sea.
The Earth is rich in many resources including water, air, soil, forests, coal, oil, natural gas and minerals. We use natural resources to make different things. For example, clay is used to make bricks and pottery, while sand is commonly used to construct buildings and make glass.
All living things need water to survive. We use water for drinking, cooking, washing clothes and dishes, and watering plants and crops. Air is vital for the survival of life on Earth: we breathe it, and fast-blowing air is also used for generating electricity using windmills. Soil is the outer layer of the Earth which contains water, air, fertile matter and gravel; it provides essential nutrients to plants for growth and shelter to many organisms. Forests are the parts of the Earth completely covered with trees: they give us timber and wood, homes for animals, and fresh air.
Natural oil, or crude oil, is a major source of energy. Once extracted, it is processed in refineries to produce fuel for cars and other means of transport, and it is also used for generating electricity. Natural gas is extracted from the Earth and used for generating electricity, producing fertilizers and as a fuel for cooking and heating in homes.
Minerals are the solid non-living chemicals present in the Earth. Gold, silver, copper, iron and salt are some of these minerals, used to make coins, jewellery, wires and utensils. Fossils are the imprints or remains of dead organisms trapped under rock and soil layers for thousands of years: they tell us about organisms that lived long ago, like the dinosaurs.
Some natural resources, such as coal, petrol, diesel and natural gas, take millions of years to form. Such limited resources are called non-renewable resources. Once they are used, they cannot be replaced easily, because making them again takes millions of years.
Natural resources that can be regained after their use are called renewable resources. Air, water, soil, forests and solar energy are renewable resources. Some of these resources are also used as fuel alternatives, like solar energy, wind energy and energy of flowing water.
All living beings depend on natural resources to survive. If we do not use natural resources responsibly, trees, animals, soil, water and air will run out or become unusable. That is why responsible use and preservation of the environment are highly essential for the survival of life on Earth.
The irresponsible use of natural resources causes serious and sometimes irreparable damage to the environment: growing population, excessive use of fossil fuels and deforestation mainly reduce natural resources, and pollution makes clean water and air hard to find. We should plant trees, recycle plastic, glass and other materials instead of throwing them away, use renewable resources such as wind, water and solar energy to generate electricity, protect air, water and land from pollution, and use water and electricity responsibly.
The questions below follow the book's exercise: tick the correct answer, short answers, constructed response questions, an investigation and a project. Model answers are solved here.
MCQ 1: Glass is made from:
(b) sand. Glass is made by melting sand.
MCQ 2: About what percentage of the Earth's surface is land?
(c) 29 percent. About 71% of the Earth's surface is water and 29% is land.
MCQ 3: The solid non-living chemicals present in the Earth are:
(b) minerals. Gold, silver, copper, iron and salt are minerals.
MCQ 4: To make things reusable is called:
(a) recycling. Recycling means making used things reusable instead of throwing them away.
MCQ 5: An example of non-renewable resources is:
(a) oil. Oil takes millions of years to form, so it cannot be replaced easily; soil, air and solar energy are renewable.
Fossils are the imprints or remains of dead organisms that were trapped under rock and soil layers thousands of years ago and turned into stone. They provide information about organisms that lived long ago and are now extinct, like the dinosaurs, and about how those organisms lived.
Forests are called renewable resources because new trees can grow in place of the trees that are cut down. If we plant trees and do not cut more than can regrow, forests can be regained after use.
Rainwater is added to rivers and streams, and snow on mountains melts and joins rivers. The rivers flow onwards and finally fall into lakes and oceans.
Advantages of cutting trees (as people see them): land becomes free for farming and houses, and wood is obtained for fuel, furniture and building. Disadvantages: animals lose their homes, soil washes away, rain decreases, and the climate changes — so the damage is far greater than the gain.
Renewable resources (air, water, soil, forests, solar energy) can be regained after use, because nature replaces them in a short time. Non-renewable resources (coal, oil, petrol, diesel, natural gas) take millions of years to form, are limited, and once used cannot be replaced easily.
From the shape and size of the skull, teeth and jaws. Sharp pointed teeth and strong jaws show a meat-eating animal, while flat grinding teeth show a plant-eating animal. So the teeth in the fossil skull tell us what the animal ate.
Very rarely. Fossils usually form from hard parts like bones, teeth and shells, which last long enough to turn into stone. A jellyfish has a soft body with no bones or shell, so it decays before it can be preserved — a jellyfish fossil is possible only in very rare conditions.
(i) Almost everything we use comes from natural resources in the end — even things made in factories start from materials taken from the Earth, so there is hardly anything that is not made from natural resources. (ii) Because most of Earth's water (97%) is salty sea water, and much of the fresh water is frozen or polluted; also water is wasted and shared unevenly, so many people do not get enough clean water. (iii) No — non-renewable resources only decrease as we use them, and even renewable resources fall when we damage forests, soil and water; we cannot create more than nature gives.
Use chipboard, clay, soil, sand, water, lime, green and blue crayons, toy carts and pebbles. Build a mountain of clay with a white glacier on top, shape valleys and a riverbed of sand and pebbles running down to a blue sea at the bottom. The model shows how melting glacier water flows as streams and rivers and finally reaches the sea.
The Earth is about 71% water and 29% land, wrapped in air. About 97% of its water is in the oceans; rain, rivers and melting snow carry the rest to lakes and seas. Its resources — water, air, soil, forests, oil, gas and minerals — give us food, homes, fuel and materials, and fossils tell us about life long ago. Coal, oil and gas are non-renewable and take millions of years to form, while air, water, soil, forests and solar energy are renewable. Saving them by planting trees, recycling and using water and electricity wisely keeps life going.
Revision tip: Write 71% and 29% from memory, then list two renewable and two non-renewable resources. Next, explain fossils in one sentence and name one thing made from sand and one from clay. Last, write three things you can do at home to save water and electricity.
