This chapter is SLO-based practice material for Class 4 Mathematics (Session 2026–27). It is NOT a copy of the official textbook exercise: no official Class 4 Mathematics textbook was available on file, so no book page numbers are claimed and no book text is reproduced. The chapter name and topics follow the Punjab (PCTB / SNC) Class 4 book list, and every exercise question below is taken from the chapter master, written from the chapter’s learning outcomes so students can practise. Worked steps added to answers are labelled as worked steps and were checked arithmetically.
A factor is a number that divides another number exactly, with no remainder left over. For 12, try dividing by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6: 12 ÷ 5 leaves 2 over, so 5 is not a factor, but the others divide cleanly, so the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12.
A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by a counting number. The multiples of 3 are 3 × 1 = 3, 3 × 2 = 6, 3 × 3 = 9, 3 × 4 = 12, 3 × 5 = 15, and so on. Multiples never stop, because counting numbers never stop.
Two small facts save a lot of mistakes. Every number is a factor of itself, because any number divided by itself is 1. And every number is a multiple of itself too, because it is itself times 1.
Factor — a number that divides another number exactly. If there is a remainder, it is not a factor. That one test, “does it divide cleanly?”, answers every factor question.
Multiple — the product of a number and a counting number. Think of the times table: the 4 times table is just the multiples of 4, going 4, 8, 12, 16 and on.
Prime number — a number with only two factors: 1 and itself. 7 is prime because its only factors are 1 and 7. The number 1 is not prime, because it has only one factor, itself, and prime needs exactly two.
Factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12, and multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and so on. Notice that 12 appears in both lists: it is a factor of itself, and it is also a multiple of 3, because 3 × 4 = 12. One number can wear both hats.
In daily life, factors answer “how can I split this fairly?” A teacher with 18 chairs can make 2 rows of 9, 3 rows of 6, or 6 rows of 3, because 2, 3 and 6 are all factors of 18. She cannot make equal rows of 4, because 18 ÷ 4 leaves 2 over.
Look around you and find one more example of your own, then tell it to a friend in your own words. Count the windows in your classroom, or the eggs in a tray, and ask: what equal groups can I make?
Factors and multiples help us share things in equal groups and find common times, like when two buses meet again. If one bus comes every 6 minutes and another every 8 minutes, they meet again after 24 minutes, because 24 is the first number that is a multiple of both 6 and 8: 6, 12, 18, 24 and 8, 16, 24.
The same idea packs boxes, arranges desks and plans timetables. Whenever two repeating things must line up, their multiples tell you when. That is why teachers ask about factors long before they use the word “timetable”.
It also protects you from unfair sharing. If someone says “divide 20 among 6 children equally”, factors tell you at once that it cannot be done exactly: 20 ÷ 6 = 3 remainder 2, so two children would need something extra, or two items stay over.
Remember: a factor divides exactly, with no remainder. A multiple is a number times a counting number, and multiples go on without end. A prime number has only two factors, 1 and itself.
Close the book and tell the main idea of this chapter in three sentences. A good answer sounds like this: factors split a number exactly, multiples build it up by times tables, and primes are the numbers that cannot be split except by 1 and themselves.
One last check that catches many children: is 1 a factor of every number? Yes, because every number divided by 1 is itself, with no remainder. So 1 is always in the factor list, and it is the smallest factor of every number.
Derived workings are labelled as worked steps.
1 What does 'Factor' mean?
Answer: a number that divides another number exactly. A factor is exactly this: a number that divides another number exactly. The other options are the meanings of multiple and prime number.
2 What does 'Multiple' mean?
Answer: the product of a number and a counting number. A multiple is the product of a number and a counting number — the times table in other words. The other options describe factor and prime number.
3 What does 'Prime number' mean?
Answer: a number with only two factors: 1 and itself. A prime number has only two factors: 1 and itself. The other options are the meanings of factor and multiple.
4 Which of these is the main topic of this chapter?
Answer: Factors and Multiples. The chapter title in the master is Factors and Multiples, so this is the main topic. The other names are the neighbouring chapters.
5 Which of these is NOT a key word of this chapter?
Answer: triangle. Factor and Multiple are this chapter's key words, so the odd one out is triangle. Note: triangle is a Geometry word from Chapter 6, not a key word of this chapter.
Answer: A factor is a number that divides another number exactly, with no remainder. A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by a counting number. Every number is a factor of itself, and its multiples go on without end. Worked structure: first name the topic, then say its definition in one sentence, then give the example. That order is what the answer above follows.
Answer: Factor: a number that divides another number exactly. Multiple: the product of a number and a counting number. Worked structure: write each key word (Factor and Multiple) with its meaning, one at a time, and check each meaning against the Important Words section.
Answer: Factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12. Multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and so on. Worked structure: take the daily-life example from the chapter, write its numbers and its working, then say in one line what it shows.

Read the answer above in that order and you will see all three parts.
Answer: Factors and multiples help us share things in equal groups and find common times, like when two buses meet again. Worked structure: give two or three separate reasons, each in its own sentence, and finish with one line saying what happens without this skill.
Answer: Start with the example: Factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12. Multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and so on. Then explain the key words: Factor means a number that divides another number exactly; Multiple means the product of a number and a counting number. Worked structure for teaching a younger child: start with the chapter's example, then explain the key words in the simplest words you know, then ask the child to say it back to you.
In this chapter you learned that factors divide a number exactly, multiples are its times table going on without end, and prime numbers have only two factors — with the factors of 12 and the multiples of 3 as the examples to remember.
Revision guidance: Practise by listing the factors of one number and the first five multiples of another every day — and always test a factor by dividing, never by guessing.
