No official Class 5 General Science book was available on disk while building it, so no book page numbers are claimed here, and the exercise below is the library master’s SLO-based practice — it is NOT presented as the official book exercise and was not re-checked against the official book.
Technology is all around us: alarms warn us of danger, phones connect us, and machines do hard work. In this chapter we learn how alarms and other everyday technology keep us safe.
An earthquake alarm senses shaking and warns people seconds before strong shaking arrives.
Fire alarms sense smoke and heat, and flood alarms warn when river water rises dangerously.
Step by step: match each alarm to what it senses. A fire alarm senses smoke and heat. An earthquake alarm senses shaking and gives people a few seconds to act — drop, cover and hold on. A flood alarm warns about rising water so people can move to higher ground. An alarm never removes the danger itself; it buys time, and time only helps if you know the action in advance and practise it.
Fans, lights, fridges and washing machines use electricity to make life easier.
At school, computers, projectors and the internet help us learn, read and share work.
Step by step: look around home and school and sort the technology by job. At school, computers and projectors help teachers show lessons, videos and pictures, and students practise and search for information. At home, fans, lights, washing machines and phones save time and effort. The pattern is the same everywhere: technology does a repeated or difficult job faster, so people can spend their time on thinking, learning and caring for each other.
We should never touch electric switches with wet hands and never put metal in sockets.
On the internet, we should not share personal details or talk to strangers, and we should tell an adult about anything strange.
Step by step: learn five safety rules and use them every time. One: dry hands for switches, and never touch a switch or socket with wet hands. Two: never put metal in sockets and never overload plugs. Three: never share your name, address, school or photos online with strangers. Four: if a stranger or a strange message worries you, tell an adult at once. Five: take breaks — a phone is good for learning and talking to family, but wasting hours on it or seeing unsafe things without adult guidance is harmful.
Technology can harm nature when factories pollute or old batteries are thrown away carelessly.
But it can also help: solar panels make clean electricity, and weather satellites warn us about storms.
Step by step: judge technology by its effect on the world, not just by its convenience. Solar panels make clean electricity from sunlight with no smoke, which helps the environment. During a disaster, alarms warn early, phones and TV spread safety messages, satellites track storms and floods, and rescue teams use boats, helicopters and radios. But technology also harms: old batteries leak chemicals into soil and water, and plastic and electronic waste pile up. So use clean options, reuse and recycle, and never throw batteries in fields.

Alarms that protect us (1): a fire alarm senses smoke and heat, an earthquake alarm senses shaking and gives a few seconds to act, and a flood alarm warns about rising water — alarms buy time, and practised action saves lives. Technology at home and school (2): computers, projectors, fans, lights and phones save time and make learning easier. Using technology safely (3): dry hands for switches, no metal in sockets, no overloaded plugs, never share personal details online, and tell an adult about strangers or strange messages. Technology and the environment (4): solar panels make clean electricity from sunlight, disaster technology warns and rescues, but old batteries and electronic waste pollute soil and water, so reuse, recycle and dispose properly.
Revision tip: Write the five safety rules from memory, then explain in two sentences each way whether a mobile phone is good or bad for a class 5 student. Finally, name one clean technology and one harmful waste, and say what you personally will do about each.
