ENGLISH

A decimal point is a wall between whole numbers and parts of a whole. Everything to the left of the point counts in ones, tens and hundreds, just as before. Everything to the right counts in tenths, hundredths and thousandths: the first digit after the point is tenths (parts out of 10), the second is hundredths (parts out of 100).

So in 7.84, the 7 means 7 ones, the 8 means 8 tenths (8/10) and the 4 means 4 hundredths (4/100). That is why the 8 in 7.84 is worth 8 tenths, not 8 ones and not 8 tens — its place after the point decides its value, exactly as place decides value before the point.

This explains a famous puzzle: why is 0.5 bigger than 0.45, even though 45 is bigger than 5? Because 0.5 means 5 tenths, which is 50 hundredths, and 50 hundredths is more than 45 hundredths. Never compare decimals by the size of the digits alone — compare them place by place, tenths first, then hundredths.

Example: Worked example: 7.84 = 7 ones + 8 tenths + 4 hundredths. And 0.5 = 50 hundredths > 45 hundredths = 0.45.

ENGLISH

Adding decimals has one golden rule: line up the decimal points. Write 4.25 + 2.5 as 4.25 + 2.50, point under point, and then add exactly like whole numbers: 425 + 250 = 675, so the answer is 6.75. If the points are not lined up, the tenths and hundredths get mixed up and the answer goes wrong.

Rounding means replacing a number with a nearby friendly one. To round 3.47 to one decimal place, look at the digit to the right of the place you are keeping — the 7 in the hundredths. Because 7 is 5 or more, the tenths digit rounds up: 3.47 becomes 3.5. But 3.42 would become 3.4, because 2 is less than 5. The rule is: 5 or more, round up; less than 5, stay.

The same rule rounds 7.86 to the nearest whole number. Look right of the ones place: the 8 in the tenths is 5 or more, so 7 rounds up to 8. Rounding is not about being exact — it is about being close enough for a quick decision, like estimating the price of shopping before you reach the counter.

Example: Worked example: 4.25 + 2.50 = 6.75 (points lined up). 3.47 → 3.5 (7 rounds up). 7.86 → 8 (8 rounds up).

ENGLISH

Fractions, decimals and percentages are three costumes for the same amount. One half can be written as the fraction 1/2, the decimal 0.5, or the percentage 50%. They look different, but they all mean the same thing: half of a whole. Learning to change between them is one of the most useful skills in this chapter.

To change a decimal into a percentage, multiply by 100 — which in practice means moving the point two places right. So 0.75 becomes 75%, and 0.6 becomes 60%. To go the other way, divide by 100: 60% is 0.60. And to change a decimal into a fraction, read its place value: 0.6 is 6 tenths, so it is 6/10, which simplifies to 3/5.

Ordering decimals becomes easy once you compare place by place. For 0.5, 0.45, 0.55 and 0.05, first compare the tenths: 0.05 has 0 tenths, so it is smallest; 0.45 and 0.5 and 0.55 all have different tenths or hundredths after that. The full order, smallest to largest, is 0.05 < 0.45 < 0.5 < 0.55. Writing them with the same number of digits — 0.50, 0.45, 0.55, 0.05 — makes the comparison obvious.

Example: Worked example: 0.6 = 6/10 = 3/5 = 60%. 0.75 × 100 = 75%. Order: 0.05 < 0.45 < 0.5 < 0.55.

ENGLISH

A percentage is simply a fraction out of 100. To find what percentage one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. A student who got 15 out of 25 scored 15 ÷ 25 × 100 = 60%. And 20% of 200 is 20/100 × 200 = 40 — first find 1% (which is 2), then multiply by 20.

Shops use percentages for discounts, and the same method tells you what you really pay. A shirt costing Rs 800 with a 25% discount: the discount is 25% of 800 = Rs 200, so you pay 800 − 200 = Rs 600. Always find the discount amount first, then subtract it — students who subtract 25 from 800 get a nonsense answer.

Watch out for the double-discount trap. A shop saying '50% + 50% off' is not giving everything free. The first 50% halves the price, and the second 50% applies to the already-reduced price, halving it again. You still pay 25% of the original price. Percentages multiply on what is left, they do not simply add up.

Example: Worked example: 15/25 × 100 = 60%. Shirt: 25% of 800 = 200, pay 800 − 200 = Rs 600. Double 50% off: pay 50% of 50% = 25%.

Multiple Choice Questions

1 In 7.84, what is the value of 8?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) 8 tenths. The first digit after the point is tenths. In 7.84 the 8 sits in the tenths place, so it is 8 tenths.

2 0.75 as a percentage is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) 75%. Percentage means out of 100: 0.75 × 100 = 75%.

3 3.47 rounded to one decimal place is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) 3.5. Look right of the tenths: the hundredths digit is 7, which is 5 or more, so the tenths digit 4 rounds up to 5: 3.5.

4 20% of 200 is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) 40. Find 1% first: 1% of 200 = 2. Then 20% = 20 × 2 = 40.

Short Answer Questions
1 Add: 4.25 + 2.5.

Answer: 6.75. Line up the points: 4.25 + 2.50 = 6.75. Without lining up, the tenths and hundredths get mixed.

2 Convert 0.6 into a fraction and a percentage.

Answer: 6/10 = 3/5 = 60%. 0.6 is 6 tenths, so 6/10, which simplifies to 3/5. As a percentage: 0.6 × 100 = 60%.

3 Round 7.86 to the nearest whole number.

Answer: 8. Look right of the ones: the tenths digit is 8, which is 5 or more, so 7 rounds up to 8.

4 A student got 15 out of 25. What percentage is that?

Answer: 60%. Part ÷ whole × 100: 15 ÷ 25 × 100 = 60%.

Long Answer Questions
1 A shirt costs Rs 800. There is a 25% discount. How much will you pay?

Answer: Discount = Rs 200, so you pay Rs 600. Discount first: 25% of 800 = 200. Then subtract: 800 − 200 = 600, so you pay Rs 600.

2 Arrange in order: 0.5, 0.45, 0.55, 0.05. Explain your method.

Answer: 0.05 < 0.45 < 0.5 < 0.55. Compare tenths first, then hundredths. Compare tenths first, then hundredths: 0.05 (0 tenths) < 0.45 (4 tenths) < 0.5 (5 tenths) < 0.55 (5 tenths, 5 hundredths).

Think and Explain
1 Why is 0.5 bigger than 0.45 even though 45 is bigger than 5?

Answer: Because 0.5 means 5 tenths (50 hundredths), which is more than 45 hundredths. 0.5 means 5 tenths, which is 50 hundredths — and 50 hundredths is more than 45 hundredths. Digits alone mislead; places decide.

2 A shop says '50% + 50% off'. Is everything free? Why not?

Answer: No: the second 50% applies to the already-reduced price, so you still pay 25% of the original. No: the second 50% applies to the already-halved price. You pay 50% of 50% = 25% of the original, not 0%.
