History is the story of the past. We learn it from sources: old buildings, coins, books, stories of elders, and things dug from the ground. Historians ask: what happened, when, and why?
Questions on this page are SLO-BASED — NOT THE OFFICIAL EXERCISE. The chapter name and topics follow the Punjab (PCTB / SNC) Class 5 book list for session 2026–27; the exercise questions below were written from the chapter's learning outcomes so that students can practice, because the official book PDF was not available to copy the exercise from.
This page is built from the PunjabTest library master for Class 5 Social Studies, Chapter 6. No official Class 5 Social Studies textbook was on disk when it was built, so no official-book page numbers are claimed here. Dates and facts are kept exactly as in the master.

Written sources: old books, letters, newspapers and inscriptions on walls.
Unwritten sources: buildings, coins, pots, tools and stories told by elders.
The Indus Valley civilisation built Mohenjo-daro and Harappa with straight streets, drains and granaries about 4,000 years ago.
Mesopotamia between the Tigris and Euphrates, and Egypt by the Nile, were also great ancient civilisations.
Civilisations decline when rivers dry up, invaders attack, diseases spread, or rulers become unjust.
The Indus cities were slowly abandoned as rivers changed course and trade weakened.
History teaches us what worked and what failed, so we do not repeat mistakes.
It also gives us pride in our ancestors' achievements, like the planned cities of the Indus Valley.

This chapter taught you to read the past through its sources — written (books, letters, inscriptions) and unwritten (buildings, coins, pots, elders' stories) — and met three great ancient civilisations: the Indus Valley (Mohenjo-daro, Harappa, about 4,000 years ago), Mesopotamia and Egypt. Civilisations decline when rivers, trade, health or justice fail — and history's job is to teach us not to repeat those mistakes.
Revision guidance: Sort six sources into written and unwritten columns from memory. Then give two reasons the Indus cities were slowly abandoned.
Topics in this chapter:
