A constitution is the supreme law: all other laws must follow it.
It sets up the government, divides its powers, and protects citizens' rights.
Pakistan's current Constitution was made in 1973. It declares Islam as the state religion and Pakistan as an Islamic republic.
Its famous Objectives Resolution (1949) says sovereignty belongs to Allah and people rule through elected representatives.
Citizens have rights: freedom of speech, religion, movement, education and equality before law.
Rights come with limits: one person's freedom must not harm another's freedom or safety.
Laws keep society peaceful: stealing, cheating and hurting others are punished by courts.
Accountability means even rulers must answer for their actions before the law.

This chapter defined the constitution as a country's supreme book of basic rules, and Pakistan's 1973 Constitution as an Islamic republic whose Objectives Resolution (1949) places sovereignty with Allah and rule through elected representatives. Citizens hold rights — speech, religion, movement, education, equality — with limits, and accountability means even rulers answer before the law.
Revision guidance: Explain in one sentence why a written constitution is needed, then name three rights and one limit on freedom from memory.
Topics in this chapter:
