ENGLISH

A computer is an electronic machine that takes data as input, processes it according to instructions, and gives the result as output. It works very fast and does not get tired.

Computers help us in school, offices, hospitals, banks and at home — for writing, learning, playing, communicating and keeping records.

A computer only does what it is told. It does not guess and it does not think like a person — it follows instructions step by step, exactly as written. That is why the instructions matter so much: if you give the computer the wrong numbers, it will calmly give you the wrong answer. People call this “garbage in, garbage out”, and it is the first lesson of computing.

Try it yourself in your head. You type 2 + 3 on the keyboard — that is input. The computer adds the two numbers — that is processing. The screen shows 5 — that is output. Every computer job, from a school attendance list to a railway ticket, is this same little cycle, repeated very fast.

A computer is not magic. It is input, processing and output — nothing more, nothing less.

2. Hardware and Software
🏷 Tags: Hardware and Software, Class 6 Computer Science, Chapter 1
ENGLISH

Hardware is the physical part of a computer that we can touch: keyboard, mouse, monitor, CPU and printer. Software is the set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do; we cannot touch it.

Without software, hardware is useless, and without hardware, software cannot run. Both work together, like a body and its instructions.

Software comes in two big families. System software runs the computer itself — Windows is the best-known example: it manages the screen, the files and the printer so that other programs can work. Application software does a particular job for the user — Word writes documents, Paint draws pictures, and a browser opens websites.

Think of it this way: hardware is the body and software is the set of instructions that tells the body what to do. A brand-new printer is useless until its driver software is installed, because without instructions the computer does not know how to talk to it. Hardware and software are a team — neither works alone.

Touch test: if you can touch it, it is hardware. If it is instructions, it is software.

Hardware vs softwareKeyboard→Monitor→Windows→Word
Hardware and Software se samjho: Hardware we touch; software is instructions we cannot touch.

3. Types of Computers

ENGLISH

Supercomputers are the fastest and used for weather forecasting and research. Mainframe computers serve many users in big organisations. Personal computers (PCs) are for one person at a time.

Laptops are portable PCs, tablets are touch-screen computers, and smartphones are small computers we carry in our pockets. The right type depends on the job.

The difference between the types is mostly size and power. A supercomputer can fill a whole room and is used where millions of calculations are needed at once, like weather forecasting. A mainframe serves hundreds of people at once in a bank or a big office. A personal computer serves one person at a desk, a laptop is the same idea made portable, and a tablet or smartphone puts a small computer in your hand.

So how do you choose? Ask what the job needs. Homework and typing suit a PC or laptop. Checking a message suits a phone. Predicting tomorrow’s storm needs a supercomputer. The machine changes, but the idea never does: input, processing, output and storage.

Big or small, every computer follows the same IPO cycle.

TypesSupercomputer→Mainframe→Personal PC→Laptop
Types of Computers se samjho: From supercomputers to laptops — size and use differ, principles are the same.

4. Input, Output and Storage Devices
🏷 Tags: Input, Output and Storage Devices, Class 6 Computer Science, Chapter 1
ENGLISH

Input devices send data in: keyboard (typing), mouse (pointing and clicking), scanner and microphone. Output devices show results: monitor (screen), printer (paper), speakers (sound).

Storage devices keep data: hard disk (inside the computer), USB flash drive and memory card (portable), and CD/DVD. Primary memory (RAM) works only while the computer is on.

Here is a quick way to sort any device: does it send data in, show results out, or keep data for later? Keyboard, mouse, scanner and microphone send data in. Monitor, printer and speakers show results out. Hard disk, USB drive, memory card and CD/DVD keep data. A device belongs to the family of the job it does — that is why the mouse is an input device even though it moves the pointer you see on the screen.

One more pair to remember: RAM is the computer’s working desk — fast, but everything on it is lost when the power goes off. A hard disk or USB drive is the cupboard — slower, but your work stays there after switching off. That is why you always save your work: saving moves it from the desk to the cupboard.

Mouse = input. Printer = output. USB drive = storage. Sort by the job, not the look.

5. Data, Information and the CPU
🏷 Tags: Data, Information and the CPU, Class 6 Computer Science, Chapter 1
ENGLISH

Data are raw facts and figures, like marks 45, 60, 70. Information is processed, meaningful data — for example, "the class average is 58". Processing turns data into information.

The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the brain of the computer. It has a Control Unit (directs work) and an ALU (does arithmetic and comparisons).

Look at the marks example closely. 45, 60, 70 on their own are just numbers — that is data. When the computer adds them and tells you the total is 175 and the average is about 58, you suddenly know something useful — that is information. Processing is the step in between: sorting, adding, comparing and arranging raw facts until they mean something.

Inside the CPU, the two parts divide the work neatly. The Control Unit is the manager: it fetches instructions and tells every other part what to do next. The ALU is the worker: it does the adding, subtracting and comparing. Together they turn data into information, thousands of times a second, without getting tired.

Data asks “what are the numbers?” Information answers “what do they mean?”

Data, Information and the CPU se samjho: Raw data, processed by the CPU, becomes useful information.

This chapter introduces the computer from the ground up: what a computer is and how the input–processing–output cycle works, how hardware you can touch and software you cannot touch work as a team, the types of computers from supercomputers to smartphones, the three families of devices — input, output and storage — and how raw data becomes useful information in the CPU, with its Control Unit and ALU.

Revision guidance: First say the IPO cycle in one breath, then name one device from each family without looking. Practise the MCQs until hardware vs software and data vs information are instant, then retell the marks example (45, 60, 70 → average 58) to explain data becoming information.
