This unit follows the official PCTB Class 6 English textbook (SNC 2022) — the unit title, theme, SLOs and scope-table skills are taken from the book. The practice questions below are written for this guide on the book's exercise pattern, with answers; they are not a verbatim copy of the book's exercise. No book page numbers are claimed.
Corruption means dishonest behaviour by people in power — taking bribes, misusing public money, giving jobs to favourites, and breaking the law for personal gain. It is a social evil because it steals from the whole nation: money meant for schools, hospitals and roads goes into private pockets.
Corruption harms everyone: the poor suffer most, justice becomes weak, and the country cannot progress. The cure is honesty — honest citizens, honest officers, and a society that refuses to pay or take bribes. As students, we can fight corruption by being honest in exams, in games and in daily life.
Dictionary skills: words are arranged alphabetically. To find a word, look at the guide words at the top of the page. A dictionary entry gives: spelling, pronunciation, part of speech (noun, verb, adjective), meanings, and sometimes an example sentence. Example: corrupt (adjective) — dishonest, especially using one's power for personal gain.
Modal verbs show possibility, ability, permission or duty: can, could, may, might, must, should, would. 'We must be honest.' 'You should not pay bribes.' 'Students can fight corruption by being honest.'
Transitional devices for reason: because, since, as, therefore, so, due to. 'Corruption grows because people do not speak against it.' An adjectival phrase describes a noun: 'the boy with great courage', 'a man of strong character'.
امدادی افعال امکان، قابلیت، اجازت یا فرض ظاہر کرتے ہیں: can, could, may, might, must, should, would۔ 'We must be honest.' 'You should not pay bribes.' 'Students can fight corruption by being honest.'
وجہ کے ربط الفاظ: because, since, as, therefore, so, due to۔ 'Corruption grows because people do not speak against it.' صفتی عبارت اسم کی وضاحت کرتی ہے: 'the boy with great courage'، 'a man of strong character'۔
Punctuating a paragraph: begin every sentence with a capital letter; end statements with full stops, questions with question marks, strong feelings with exclamation marks; use commas in lists and after introductory words; use quotation marks for exact words.
Formal letter: written to officers, principals or editors. Format: sender's address, date, receiver's address, subject, salutation (Respected Sir/Madam,), body (clear, polite, to the point), closing (Yours faithfully, + name). A formal letter against corruption, for example to the editor, must be polite but firm.
