All living things are made of cells. A cell is the smallest unit that can carry out life processes. Some organisms (like bacteria) have one cell; humans have trillions.
Cells were first seen with a microscope. Robert Hooke named them "cells" because they looked like small rooms.
Both plant and animal cells have a cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus and mitochondria. The nucleus controls the cell; mitochondria release energy.
Only plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts (for photosynthesis) and usually one large vacuole. Animal cells have small vacuoles or none.
Cells change shape to suit their job: nerve cells are long to carry messages; muscle cells contract to move; red blood cells are round and flat to carry oxygen; root hair cells absorb water.
This is called specialisation: form follows function. A nerve cell cannot do a muscle cell’s job.
Levels of organisation: cell → tissue (group of similar cells) → organ (group of tissues) → organ system (group of organs) → organism.
Example: muscle cells → muscle tissue → heart (organ) → circulatory system → human. In plants: leaf cells → leaf tissue → leaf → shoot system → plant.
A microscope magnifies tiny things. To see onion peel cells: peel a thin layer, place it on a slide with a drop of water and stain, cover with a cover slip, and observe under low then high power.
Cheek cells are animal cells: gently scrape the inside of the cheek, stain, and observe. Safety: never share slides, and handle glass carefully.

MCQ 1: The basic unit of life is the:
(c) Cell — The cell.
MCQ 2: Which organelle controls the cell?
(b) Nucleus — The nucleus.
MCQ 3: Which part is found only in plant cells?
(c) Chloroplast — Chloroplasts, for photosynthesis.
MCQ 4: Correct order of organisation:
(b) Cell → tissue → organ → system — Cell → tissue → organ → system → organism.
MCQ 5: Red blood cells carry:
(b) Oxygen — Oxygen around the body.
Short Q1: Define a cell.
The smallest unit of life that can carry out life processes.
Short Q2: Give two differences between plant and animal cells.
Plant cells have a cell wall and chloroplasts; animal cells do not. Plant cells usually have one large vacuole.
Short Q3: What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells working together for one job.
Short Q4: Why are nerve cells long?
So they can carry messages over long distances in the body.
Long Q1: Draw and label a plant cell and an animal cell, and list three differences.
Plant cell labels: cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, chloroplast, large vacuole, mitochondria. Animal cell: membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria, small vacuoles. Differences: wall present/absent; chloroplasts present/absent; vacuole large/small.
Long Q2: Explain the levels of organisation with a human example.
Muscle cells group into muscle tissue; tissues group into the heart (organ); the heart with blood vessels forms the circulatory system; systems together form the human organism. Each level depends on the one below.
Cell (1) is the smallest unit that can carry out life processes; every living thing is made of cells, from one-celled bacteria to humans with trillions, and Robert Hooke named them after small rooms he saw under the microscope. Plant and animal cells (2) share membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus (which controls the cell) and mitochondria (which release energy); only plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts for photosynthesis and usually one large vacuole. Specialised cells (3) change shape to suit their job — long nerve cells carry messages, muscle cells contract, flat red blood cells carry oxygen, root hair cells absorb water — form follows function. Levels (4) run cell → tissue → organ → organ system → organism, e.g. muscle cells → muscle tissue → heart → circulatory system → human. Observation (5) needs a slide, water and stain, a cover slip, and low power before high power.
Revision tip: Draw and label a plant cell and an animal cell from memory, then list three differences without looking. Say the five levels in order with the heart example, and practise the onion-peel steps in order: peel, slide, water, stain, cover slip, low power, high power.
