The Sun is a star at the centre of our solar system. Eight planets orbit it: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
Mercury is closest and hottest in daytime; Neptune is furthest and coldest. Earth is the only known planet with life — the "blue planet" of water and air.
Rotation: Earth spins on its axis once in 24 hours, causing day and night. Revolution: Earth orbits the Sun once in about 365¼ days, causing the year and seasons.
Earth’s axis is tilted (about 23.5°), so different parts get more sunlight at different times of year — that tilt causes seasons, not distance from the Sun.
The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite. It orbits Earth in about 27⅓ days and reflects sunlight — it does not make its own light.
Its phases (new, crescent, half, full) change as the Sun lights different parts of the side facing us. The Moon causes tides by its gravity pulling ocean water.
Natural satellites orbit planets naturally (our Moon). Artificial satellites are launched by humans for communication, TV, weather forecasting, navigation (GPS) and Earth observation.
Pakistan’s satellites (e.g. PakSat) carry TV and communication signals. Satellites orbit at different heights; geostationary satellites stay over one place.
Humans first landed on the Moon in 1969 (Apollo 11). Telescopes, rockets and space probes explore planets, stars and the universe beyond.
Space research gives us satellite TV, weather warnings, GPS, and new materials — but space junk and cost are real problems to manage.

MCQ 1: How many planets orbit the Sun?
(b) 8 — Eight planets.
MCQ 2: Day and night are caused by Earth’s:
(b) Rotation — Rotation on its axis in 24 hours.
MCQ 3: Seasons are mainly caused by:
(b) Axial tilt — The 23.5° tilt.
MCQ 4: The Moon is a:
(c) Natural satellite — Earth’s natural satellite.
MCQ 5: First Moon landing year:
(b) 1969 — Apollo 11, 1969.
Short Q1: Name the planets in order from the Sun.
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
Short Q2: Differentiate rotation and revolution.
Rotation: spinning on the axis (day/night, 24 h). Revolution: orbiting the Sun (year, 365¼ days).
Short Q3: Why does the Moon shine at night?
It reflects sunlight; it makes no light of its own.
Short Q4: Give two uses of artificial satellites.
Communication/TV signals and weather forecasting (also GPS and Earth observation).
Long Q1: Explain why we have day and night, and why seasons change.
Day/night: Earth rotates on its axis once in 24 hours; the side facing the Sun has day, the other side night. Seasons: Earth’s axis is tilted 23.5° as it revolves around the Sun, so each hemisphere gets more direct sunlight for part of the year (its summer) and less for the rest (its winter).
Long Q2: Compare natural and artificial satellites with examples and uses.
Natural: the Moon — orbits Earth naturally, causes tides, marks months. Artificial: PakSat and weather satellites — launched by humans for TV, communication, weather forecasting, GPS and Earth observation. Both orbit by gravity; artificial ones can be switched and positioned for jobs.
Sun and planets (1): the Sun is a star at the centre of our solar system; eight planets orbit it — Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune; Mercury is closest, Neptune furthest and coldest, and Earth is the only known planet with life, the "blue planet" of water and air. Rotation and revolution (2): rotation (spinning on its axis once in 24 hours) causes day and night; revolution (orbiting the Sun once in about 365¼ days) causes the year and seasons; the 23.5° axial tilt — not distance from the Sun — causes seasons, since different parts get more sunlight at different times of year. Moon (3): Earth’s only natural satellite, orbiting in about 27⅓ days, reflecting sunlight rather than making its own light; its phases (new, crescent, half, full) change as the Sun lights different parts of the side facing us, and its gravity causes tides. Satellites (4): natural satellites orbit planets naturally (our Moon); artificial satellites are launched for communication, TV, weather forecasting, navigation (GPS) and Earth observation — Pakistan’s PakSat carries TV and communication signals — and geostationary satellites stay over one place. Exploration (5): humans first landed on the Moon in 1969 (Apollo 11); telescopes, rockets and probes explore beyond, giving satellite TV, weather warnings, GPS and new materials, while space junk and cost are real problems to manage.
Revision tip: Name the eight planets in order from the Sun, then explain day/night and seasons in two separate sentences, naming the cause of each. Then give two uses each of natural and artificial satellites.
