ABOUT THIS PAGE — PROVENANCE

This page is built from the PunjabTest library master for Class 6 Geography, Chapter 1. No official Class 6 Geography textbook was on disk when it was built, so no official-book page numbers are claimed here. The exercise below is the SLO-based practice exercise from the library master, not the official textbook exercise — use your school book for the official exercise. Section boxes keep the master's own English and Urdu wording, with the guide's own step-by-step explanations added after them in the guide's own words. Chapter order follows the PCTB Geography Class 6 master (8 chapters); the SNC 2022 edition order may differ, so if your school book reorders or renames chapters, follow your school book.

1. Earth in the Solar System
🏷 Tags: solar system, planet, Earth, oblate spheroid, diameter
ENGLISH

Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the fifth largest. It is the only known planet with life, liquid water oceans, and oxygen-rich air.

Earth is not a perfect sphere: it is slightly flattened at the poles and bulging at the equator — an oblate spheroid. Its diameter is about 12,742 km.

A good way to remember the order is to count outwards from the Sun on your fingers: Mercury first, Venus second, Earth third. Earth looks blue from space not because the land is blue, but because oceans cover most of its surface and reflect the sky. And do not picture a perfect ball: press a soft ball gently at the top and bottom and it bulges at the middle — that is exactly Earth's shape, a little flat at the poles and a little wide at the Equator.

EarthThird planet→Only life→Oblate spheroid→12,742 km
2. Movements of the Earth
🏷 Tags: rotation, revolution, leap year, tilt, seasons
ENGLISH

Rotation (24 hours) causes day and night. Revolution (365¼ days) around the Sun causes the year. The extra quarter day adds up to a leap year every four years.

The tilted axis (23.5°) causes seasons: when the Northern Hemisphere tilts towards the Sun, it is summer there and winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

Keep the two movements apart with a simple picture. Rotation is Earth spinning on its own axis, like a top spinning on the spot — one full spin takes about 24 hours, and the side facing the Sun has day while the other side has night. Revolution is the long journey around the Sun, which takes about 365 and a quarter days; those four quarters add up to one whole extra day every four years, and that is the leap day. Seasons come from the tilt, not from Earth moving nearer or farther: when your hemisphere leans towards the Sun, its days are longer and hotter, and that is summer.

MovementsRotation 24 h→Revolution 365¼d→Leap year→Tilt seasons
3. Latitudes and Longitudes
🏷 Tags: latitude, longitude, Equator, Prime Meridian, coordinates
ENGLISH

Latitudes are imaginary lines running east–west, measuring distance north or south of the Equator (0°). Important latitudes: Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N), Tropic of Capricorn (23.5°S), Arctic and Antarctic Circles (66.5°).

Longitudes run north–south from pole to pole, measuring east or west of the Prime Meridian (0°, through Greenwich). Together they give any place’s exact address (coordinates).

Think of latitudes and longitudes as the rows and columns of a giant seating plan for the whole Earth. Latitudes are the rows: they run east to west, and the Equator, 0°, is the middle row. Count north from it and you get north latitudes, count south and you get south latitudes. Longitudes are the columns: they run from pole to pole, and the Prime Meridian through Greenwich, 0°, is the starting column. Give both numbers together — for example about 31.5°N, 74.3°E for Lahore — and you have pinned down one single place on the whole planet, like giving a house number and a street together.

GridEquator 0°→Tropics 23.5°→Prime Meridian0°→Coordinates
4. Heat Zones of the Earth
🏷 Tags: heat zones, torrid, temperate, frigid, Pakistan climate
ENGLISH

Torrid Zone (between the two tropics): hot all year, Sun overhead. Temperate Zones (between tropics and polar circles): moderate seasons. Frigid Zones (inside polar circles): very cold, ice-covered.

Pakistan lies mostly in the Temperate Zone (north) and near the Torrid Zone (south), which is why its south is hotter.

The three zones follow one simple rule: the straighter the Sun's rays fall, the hotter the place. Between the two tropics the Sun passes overhead during the year, so the Torrid Zone stays hot all year. Between a tropic and a polar circle the Sun's rays fall slanting, and the slant changes through the year — that is why the Temperate Zones get real seasons, a hot summer and a cold winter. Inside the polar circles the rays are so slanting and weak that ice hardly melts, and that is the Frigid Zone. Pakistan sits mostly in the Temperate Zone, with its south leaning towards the Torrid Zone, which is exactly why Karachi feels hotter than the northern mountains.

Heat zonesTorrid: hot→Temperate:seasons→Frigid: cold→Pakistan
🏷 Tags: life on Earth, Goldilocks, water, atmosphere, magnetic field
ENGLISH

Earth has the right distance from the Sun (not too hot, not too cold), liquid water, breathable air, a protective atmosphere, and a magnetic field shielding harmful solar rays.

These "Goldilocks" conditions together make Earth unique. Protecting them — clean air, water and soil — is our shared duty.

Imagine Goldilocks tasting porridge: too hot is no good, too cold is no good, it has to be just right. Earth is the just-right planet. It sits at just the right distance from the Sun, so water can stay liquid instead of boiling away or freezing solid. Its air has oxygen to breathe, its atmosphere works like a blanket that keeps temperatures steady and burns up small space rocks, and its magnetic field turns away harmful rays from the Sun. Take away any one of these five — distance, water, air, blanket, shield — and life as we know it would not survive, which is why looking after clean air, water and soil is not a favour to nature, it is looking after our own home.

Life supportRight distance→Water→Air→Protection

Short Answer Questions
Short 1: Why is Earth called the blue planet?

Answer: Because oceans cover about 71% of its surface, making it look blue from space.

Guide's extra step (not book text): Step to remember: oceans cover about 71% of Earth, so from space the blue of water dominates the brown and green of land.

Short 2: What causes a leap year?

Answer: Earth takes 365¼ days to orbit; the four quarters add to one extra day every four years.

Guide's extra step (not book text): Steps: one orbit takes 365¼ days, so four quarters make one day; that extra day is added as 29 February every fourth year.

Short 3: Define latitude and longitude.

Answer: Latitude: angular distance north/south of the Equator. Longitude: angular distance east/west of the Prime Meridian.

Guide's extra step (not book text): Test trick: latitude answers 'how far north or south', longitude answers 'how far east or west' — if a question asks only one of these, give only that half.

Short 4: Why does Pakistan’s south feel hotter than its north?

Answer: The south is nearer the Torrid Zone and lower in height; the north has high mountains that stay cool.

Guide's extra step (not book text): Two reasons together make the full mark: the south is nearer the Torrid Zone, and it is lower, while the north is high and mountainous.

Long Answer Questions
Long 1: Explain how rotation, revolution and tilt together produce day, night, year and seasons.

Answer: Rotation (24 h spin) gives day on the Sun-facing side and night on the other. Revolution (365¼ days orbit) gives the year, with a leap day every four years. The 23.5° tilt means each hemisphere leans towards the Sun for half the year (its summer, longer days) and away for the other half (its winter, shorter days).

Guide's extra step (not book text): Build the answer in three sentences: rotation for day and night, revolution for the year, tilt for the seasons — then add the leap-day step to show you know why the year is 365¼ days.

Long 2: Using latitudes and longitudes, explain how to find Lahore’s position on a globe.

Answer: Find the latitude line (about 31.5°N) and the longitude line (about 74.3°E) and where they cross — that crossing is Lahore. Latitude tells how far north of the Equator; longitude tells how far east of Greenwich. Any place on Earth has one such unique crossing.

Guide's extra step (not book text): Steps: find the latitude line first, then the longitude line, then name their crossing — and always give both numbers, because one number alone is a whole line, not a place.

ENGLISH

This chapter placed Earth in its family: the third planet from the Sun, slightly flattened at the poles, and the only known planet with life. Its two movements were kept apart — rotation gives day and night, revolution gives the year and the leap day — and the 23.5° tilt gives the seasons. Latitudes and longitudes were learned as Earth's address system, the three heat zones explained why Pakistan's south is hotter than its north, and the chapter closed on why Earth, and only Earth, can support life.

Revision guidance: Revise by drawing, not by rereading: sketch Earth with its tilt, mark the Equator, the two tropics and the polar circles, and label the three heat zones. Then test yourself with three questions — third planet why, rotation versus revolution, and Lahore's coordinates — until each answer comes in one sentence.
