No official Class 6 Geography textbook was on disk when it was built, so no official-book page numbers are claimed here. The exercise below is the SLO-based practice exercise from the library master, not the official textbook exercise — use your school book for the official exercise. Section boxes keep the master's own English and Urdu wording, with the guide's own step-by-step explanations added after them in the guide's own words. Chapter order follows the PCTB Geography Class 6 master (8 chapters); the SNC 2022 edition order may differ, so if your school book reorders or renames chapters, follow your school book.

A globe is a small model of Earth: true in shape and relative size, but small and hard to carry or to show detail. A flat map shows Earth (or part of it) on paper: easy to carry and detail, but shapes or sizes get distorted.
We use globes to understand the whole Earth, and maps for towns, routes and small areas. Neither is perfect — each suits a purpose.
Here is the trade-off in one sentence: a globe is true but clumsy, a map is handy but never fully true. You cannot peel an orange and lay the peel flat without tearing or stretching it, and flattening the round Earth onto paper has the same problem — something always stretches, shrinks or tears. So use each tool for what it is good at: spin a globe when you want the big picture of continents and oceans in their true shapes, and open a map when you need a street, a route or a small area in detail. Asking which one is better in general is the wrong question; the right question is, better for what job?
Physical maps show natural features: mountains (brown), plains (green), rivers and seas (blue). Political maps show boundaries of countries, provinces and cities.
Thematic maps show one theme: rainfall, population, crops, or roads. A weather map is thematic; a road map helps travellers.
Do not start by staring at a map; start by asking what you need from it, because that tells you which kind to pick up. If you want mountains, rivers and plains, take a physical map and read its colours: brown for high land, green for low plains, blue for water. If you want countries, provinces and capitals, take a political map and follow the boundary lines. If you want one single idea — where it rains most, where wheat grows, where roads run — take a thematic map, because it hides everything else and lets that one theme stand out. In a test, the map's title usually gives the kind away, so reading the title first is free marks.
Scale shows the relation between map distance and real distance, e.g. 1 cm : 1 km means 1 cm on the map = 1 km on the ground. Large-scale maps show small areas in detail; small-scale maps show large areas roughly.
Direction: maps usually put north at the top (compass rose / north arrow). Symbols (conventional signs) stand for features: a blue line for a river, a black dot for a town. The key (legend) explains symbols.
Work through a map in this order and you will rarely go wrong. First, the scale: 1 cm : 2 km means every centimetre you measure on paper is really two kilometres on the ground, so a 5 cm stretch is 10 km — just multiply. Second, direction: find the north arrow or compass rose before you decide anything is north, south, east or west, because the top of the page is only north when the map says so. Third, the key: a blue line, a black dot, a tiny triangle — none of these mean anything until the key tells you that the line is a river, the dot is a town and the triangle is a mountain peak. Large-scale maps show a small area in great detail, like your own mohalla; small-scale maps show a whole country roughly, like a map of Pakistan in your book.
Steps: read the title (what the map shows), check the scale, note the direction, use the key for symbols, then find places with the grid (latitudes/longitudes).
Example: on a Pakistan map, find the Indus river (blue line) flowing south to the Arabian Sea, and the Karakoram mountains (brown) in the north.
Reading a map is a recipe, not a talent: follow the steps in order. Step one, read the title, because it tells you what the map is about — a road map, a rainfall map, a map of Pakistan. Step two, check the scale so your distances mean something. Step three, note the direction from the north arrow. Step four, use the key to learn the symbols. Only then, step five, go hunting for places, using the grid of latitudes and longitudes like rows and columns. Try it on a Pakistan map: the blue line running south to the Arabian Sea is the Indus, and the brown shading in the north is the Karakoram and Himalayas. If you skip the title and key, you are guessing; if you follow the steps, you are reading.
Maps guide travel, plan cities, track weather, and help in emergencies (flood maps). Today, digital maps and GPS on phones give live directions.
Even so, reading a paper map matters when phones fail: batteries die, signals vanish, but a paper map still works.
Maps are not just a school subject; they quietly run daily life. A delivery rider follows a digital map, a town planner uses maps to decide where roads and schools go, and during floods, relief teams use flood maps to see which areas are under water and where help must reach first. Phones and GPS have made all this easier, with live directions spoken aloud. But a phone can run out of battery, lose signal in the mountains, or break — and a paper map needs none of those things. That is why learning to read a paper map is not old-fashioned; it is your backup plan, and in an emergency a backup plan is the whole plan.

MCQ 1: A globe is better than a map for showing:
(b) The whole Earth truly — True shape and relative size of the whole Earth.
MCQ 2: On physical maps, mountains are usually:
(c) Brown — Brown for high land.
MCQ 3: Scale 1 cm : 2 km means 5 cm on the map equals:
(b) 10 km — 5 × 2 = 10 km.
MCQ 4: The key of a map explains:
(b) The symbols — Symbols (conventional signs).
MCQ 5: Maps usually put which direction at the top?
(d) North — North at the top.
Answer: Globe: true shape/size. Map: portable and detailed for small areas.
Guide's extra step (not book text): One line each is enough: a globe is true in shape and size for the whole Earth, while a map is portable and can show a small area in detail.
Answer: Blue: water (rivers, seas). Green: low plains.
Guide's extra step (not book text): Memory pair: blue for water, green for low plains — and brown, which students often forget, for high land and mountains.
Answer: 4 × 5 = 20 km.
Guide's extra step (not book text): Working: 4 cm × 5 km per cm = 20 km — always write the multiplication, because the working itself carries a mark.
Answer: A map showing one theme, e.g. a rainfall map.
Guide's extra step (not book text): Example clinches it: a rainfall map shows only rainfall, even though the same land also has roads and cities that the map leaves out.
Answer: Title tells me it is a road map of Punjab. Scale lets me measure map distance and convert to real kilometres. Key explains road symbols (motorway, highway) and town dots. North arrow orients the map so I follow the route northwards from Lahore to Islamabad, noting cities on the way.
Guide's extra step (not book text): Answer in the map-reader's order: title, then scale, then direction, then key — and only then the route itself, measured step by step.
Answer: A sphere cannot be flattened without stretching or tearing — like peeling an orange flat. So maps either distort size (Greenland looks huge on some maps) or shape (countries near poles stretch). Globes avoid this because they stay spherical.
Guide's extra step (not book text): The orange-peel picture is the explanation: a sphere cannot be flattened without stretching or tearing, so every flat map must distort shape, size, distance or direction somewhere.
This chapter compared the two ways we picture Earth: the globe, true in shape but hard to carry, and the flat map, handy but always distorting something. It sorted maps into physical, political and thematic kinds, taught the three tools every map reader needs — scale, direction and the key — and gave a five-step recipe for reading any map. It ended where maps matter most: in daily travel, planning and emergencies, and in the paper map that still works when a phone does not.
Revision guidance: Practise with a real map, not just notes: take any Pakistan map, find the Indus in blue, the Karakoram in brown, and work out one scale sum (for example 4 cm at 1 cm : 5 km). If you can do title, scale, direction, key and grid in order, you can read any map in a test.
