ABOUT THIS PAGE — PROVENANCE

This page is built from the PunjabTest library master for Class 6 Geography, Chapter 3. No official Class 6 Geography textbook was on disk when it was built, so no official-book page numbers are claimed here. The exercise below is the SLO-based practice exercise from the library master, not the official textbook exercise — use your school book for the official exercise. Section boxes keep the master's own English and Urdu wording, with the guide's own step-by-step explanations added after them in the guide's own words. Chapter order follows the PCTB Geography Class 6 master (8 chapters); the SNC 2022 edition order may differ, so if your school book reorders or renames chapters, follow your school book.

1. The Four Realms
🏷 Tags: four realms, lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere
ENGLISH

Earth has four realms: lithosphere (land, rocks, soil), hydrosphere (all water: oceans, rivers, ice), atmosphere (air around Earth), and biosphere (all living things).

Humans live where realms meet: on land (lithosphere), breathing air (atmosphere), drinking water (hydrosphere), among plants and animals (biosphere).

The four realms are easier if you picture your own village or town. Stand in a field: the soil under your feet is the lithosphere, the canal water nearby is the hydrosphere, the air you breathe is the atmosphere, and the wheat, the farmer and the birds are the biosphere. None of them lives alone. A plant needs soil to stand in, water to drink, air to breathe and sunlight through the air — pull one realm away and the plant dies. Humans are the same: we build on land, drink water, breathe air and eat living things. Geography's big idea here is that Earth is not four separate boxes, it is one house with four rooms, and what happens in one room is felt in the others.

Four realmsLithosphere→Hydrosphere→Atmosphere→Biosphere
2. The Atmosphereفضا
🏷 Tags: atmosphere, nitrogen, oxygen, ozone, weather
ENGLISH

The atmosphere is the blanket of gases around Earth: about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% other gases (including carbon dioxide and water vapour).

It gives us air to breathe, keeps temperatures moderate, blocks harmful rays (ozone layer), and brings weather: clouds, rain, wind.

Think of the atmosphere as a thin blanket wrapped around the whole Earth — thin compared with the planet, but it does four jobs at once. It gives us the oxygen we breathe, mixed mostly with nitrogen, which is the quiet gas that makes up most of the air. It keeps temperatures from swinging wildly between day and night, the way a blanket keeps you warm. Its ozone layer, high above, blocks the Sun's harmful ultraviolet rays, like sunscreen for the whole planet. And it carries weather itself: water evaporates into it, gathers into clouds, and falls back as rain. Without that blanket, Earth would be a scorched rock by day and a frozen rock by night.

Atmosphere78% nitrogen→21% oxygen→Ozone→Weather
Faza samjho:
3. The Hydrosphere
🏷 Tags: hydrosphere, water cycle, fresh water, evaporation, precipitation
ENGLISH

About 71% of Earth is covered by water, but about 97% of it is salty ocean water. Only about 3% is fresh, and most of that is frozen in glaciers or deep underground.

The water cycle moves water: evaporation from seas → condensation into clouds → precipitation (rain, snow) → collection in rivers and seas again.

The numbers are the surprise in this topic, so learn them in pairs. About 71% of Earth's surface is water, yet about 97% of that water is salty ocean water we cannot drink or pour on crops. Only about 3% is fresh, and most of that fresh water is locked in glaciers or deep underground, leaving only a tiny share in rivers and lakes for us to use. The water cycle keeps that small share moving: the Sun heats the seas, water evaporates up, cools into clouds, falls as rain or snow, and collects again in rivers and seas. Follow one drop around that loop and you have the whole cycle: up as vapour, across as cloud, down as rain, back as river.

Hydrosphere71% covered→97% salty→3% fresh→Water cycle
4. The Lithosphere and Soil
🏷 Tags: lithosphere, soil, humus, erosion, farming
ENGLISH

The lithosphere is Earth’s solid outer layer: continents, ocean floors, rocks and soil. Soil forms slowly from broken rock mixed with dead plants and animals (humus).

Good soil (with humus, air and water) grows crops; thin or eroded soil grows little. Protecting soil from erosion keeps farming possible.

Soil is not just dirt; it is a slow recipe. Start with rock broken down over hundreds of years by rain, heat, cold and roots. Mix in dead plants and animals, rotted down into dark, rich humus. Add air gaps and a little water, and only then do you have soil that can feed a crop. That is why two fields can look alike and grow very differently: the one with humus holds water and food for roots, while thin, eroded soil lets both wash away. Every time soil is washed off a bare slope by rain, years of that slow recipe are lost in an afternoon, which is why keeping ground covered with plants, and planting trees on slopes, is farming sense, not just nature advice.

LithosphereRocks→Soil + humus→Slow forming→Erosion
5. Caring for Our Home
🏷 Tags: environment, pollution, climate change, save water, trees
ENGLISH

Humans change all four realms: cutting forests, polluting air and water, wasting soil. Climate change, floods and droughts follow.

Care: plant trees, save water, reduce plastic, recycle, and use clean energy. Small acts by many people protect the whole home.

The sad part of this topic is simple: the same hands that depend on the four realms are the hands damaging them, by cutting forests faster than they regrow, by letting smoke and plastic into air and water, and by wasting soil. The hopeful part is just as simple: the damage is made of small acts, so the repair can be made of small acts too. Plant a tree and it holds soil, gives shade and cleans air. Save water at home and there is more for fields downstream. Use less plastic and less of it reaches rivers and the sea. No single student can fix climate change alone, but a school, a mohalla and a town full of students doing the small things is not small at all — that is how a whole home gets looked after.

CarePlant trees→Save water→Recycle→Clean energy

Short Answer Questions
Short 1: Name the four realms with one example each.

Answer: Lithosphere: mountains. Hydrosphere: oceans. Atmosphere: air. Biosphere: forests.

Guide's extra step (not book text): One example each, in the chapter's own order: lithosphere — mountains, hydrosphere — oceans, atmosphere — air, biosphere — plants and animals.

Short 2: Why is the ozone layer important?

Answer: It blocks harmful ultraviolet rays from the Sun.

Guide's extra step (not book text): Why it matters: ultraviolet rays damage skin and eyes, so a layer that blocks them protects every living thing, not just humans.

Short 3: Describe the water cycle in four steps.

Answer: Evaporation → condensation → precipitation → collection.

Guide's extra step (not book text): Say the four steps as a loop, not a list: evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection — and collection feeds evaporation again.

Short 4: How can students protect soil?

Answer: Plant trees, avoid littering, and support keeping ground covered with plants.

Guide's extra step (not book text): Three student actions cover it: plant trees, do not litter, and keep ground covered with plants so rain cannot wash the soil away.

Long Answer Questions
Long 1: Explain why fresh water is precious even though Earth looks mostly water.

Answer: 71% of Earth is water, but 97% is salty oceans we cannot drink or use for most crops. Of the 3% fresh, most is locked in glaciers and deep groundwater. Only a tiny fraction flows in rivers and lakes — so wasting or polluting it threatens life directly.

Guide's extra step (not book text): Make the paradox the first sentence: Earth looks mostly water, yet almost all of it is salty — then the 97% and 3% figures do the explaining.

Long 2: How do the four realms interact in a farm field?

Answer: Lithosphere gives soil; hydrosphere gives rain and irrigation water; atmosphere gives air, carbon dioxide for crops and rain-bearing winds; biosphere gives crops, soil microbes, pollinating insects and farmers. Damage to one realm — e.g. polluted water — harms all the others.

Guide's extra step (not book text): Use a farm field as the example: soil from the lithosphere, rain and irrigation from the hydrosphere, air and sunlight through the atmosphere, and the crop itself as the biosphere.

ENGLISH

This chapter treated Earth as one house with four rooms: the lithosphere of land and soil, the hydrosphere of all water, the atmosphere of air, and the biosphere of all living things. It measured the atmosphere's gases, followed water through its cycle while noting how little fresh water we can actually use, and showed how soil is slowly made from rock and humus. It closed with the responsibility that follows: humans change all four realms, so humans must also look after them.

Revision guidance: Memorise the numbers in pairs — 78% nitrogen with 21% oxygen, 71% water-covered with 97% salty and 3% fresh — and draw the water cycle as four arrows in a loop. Then name one human action that harms each realm and one that helps it; that table answers most short questions in this chapter.
