No official Class 6 Geography textbook was on disk when it was built, so no official-book page numbers are claimed here. The exercise below is the SLO-based practice exercise from the library master, not the official textbook exercise — use your school book for the official exercise. Section boxes keep the master's own English and Urdu wording, with the guide's own step-by-step explanations added after them in the guide's own words. Chapter order follows the PCTB Geography Class 6 master (8 chapters); the SNC 2022 edition order may differ, so if your school book reorders or renames chapters, follow your school book.

A settlement is a place where people live and work: a hamlet, village, town or city. People settle where they find water, food, safety and work.
Settlements need: water, flat or sheltered land, building material, fuel, and routes to other places.
A settlement is any place where people live and work, from a tiny hamlet of a few houses to a city of millions — size is not the definition, living and working is. Early settlers chose their sites for reasons you can still see today: fresh water to drink and farm with, flat or sheltered land to build on, building material and fuel nearby, and a route to other places for trade. A good site gives most of these at once; a bad site gives few, and people either move on or struggle. When you are asked why a town stands where it stands, do not guess one reason — run through the list: water, food, safety, work, materials, routes — and you will usually find three or four of them together.
Rural settlements are villages and hamlets where most people farm. Houses are often scattered (farmsteads) or clustered around a well, mosque or market.
Village life: farming, livestock, small shops, a school and mosque, strong neighbour ties, and dependence on seasons and rain.
Rural settlements are villages and hamlets, and farming shapes almost everything about them. Houses take two patterns, and both are easy to picture. In a scattered pattern, each farmhouse stands near its own fields, far from its neighbours, because the farmer wants to be close to the land he works. In a clustered pattern, houses huddle together around a shared centre — a well, a mosque, a small market — because water, prayer and shopping are shared, and neighbours help each other at harvest. Village life follows the seasons: sowing, watering, harvesting, and the quiet months between, with a school, a mosque, small shops and strong neighbour ties holding the community together through the year.
Urban settlements are towns and cities where most people work in trade, industry, services and offices, not farming. Cities have dense houses, roads, markets, hospitals and schools.
Cities grow by natural increase and by migration from villages (people seeking jobs, education and hospitals).
Urban settlements — towns and cities — flip the village pattern. Most people there do not farm; they work in trade, factories, services and offices, and they buy their food instead of growing it. Cities are dense: houses close together, roads busy, markets, hospitals and schools within reach. They grow in two ways, and both matter in tests. Natural increase adds people when births exceed deaths inside the city. Migration adds people when villagers move in seeking jobs, education and hospitals — the pull of the city. Put the two together and you see why a city can double in a generation even though nobody built a new city next door; the same city simply filled up faster.
Settlements have functions: administrative (capital, district HQ), commercial (markets), industrial (factories), religious (shrines), educational (university towns), ports, and tourist centres.
Example: Islamabad — administrative capital. Faisalabad — industrial (textiles). Murree — tourist town. Karachi — port + commercial + industrial.
Every settlement has a job, and geographers call it its function. Learn the list with one Pakistani example each and the topic is yours. Administrative: the capital or district headquarters, like Islamabad, where government sits. Commercial: a market town where farmers and traders meet. Industrial: a factory town, like Faisalabad with its textiles. Religious: a place people visit for shrines. Educational: a university town full of students. Port: a harbour town, like Karachi. Tourist: a place people visit for beauty or cool air, like Murree. Most big cities mix functions — Karachi is port, commercial and industrial all at once — but small towns usually have one main function, and that function explains why the town exists at all.
Fast city growth brings traffic jams, air and water pollution, housing shortage, slums, and pressure on water and waste systems.
Planning helps: zoning (separate homes, factories, parks), public transport, clean water, waste collection, parks, and affordable housing.
Fast-growing cities collect the same problems everywhere, so learn them as a set: traffic jams, dirty air and water, too few houses, slums where houses are scarce, and water and waste systems that cannot keep up. Planning is the opposite of letting all that happen by accident. Its main tool is zoning: putting homes, factories, shops and parks in separate zones, so children do not play next to a noisy factory and factories do not sit in the middle of homes. Add public transport so fewer cars clog the roads, clean water pipes, regular waste collection, parks for fresh air and play, and affordable housing so families are not forced into slums. A planned city is not a perfect city, but it is a city where problems are answered before they become crises.

Guide's extra step (not book text): Four needs in one line: water for drinking, crops, animals, transport and trade — rivers give all five at once.
Answer: Rural: villages, farming, scattered, seasonal. Urban: towns/cities, trade/industry/services, dense.
Guide's extra step (not book text): Contrast in pairs: rural — villages, farming, scattered; urban — towns and cities, trade and services, dense.
Answer: Industrial: Faisalabad (textiles). Tourist: Murree.
Guide's extra step (not book text): One each, named with the function: industrial — Faisalabad for textiles, tourist — Murree.
Answer: Traffic jams and housing shortage (slums); also pollution and water strain.
Guide's extra step (not book text): Two problems from different systems, for example traffic jams and housing shortage with slums, plus pollution and water strain.
Answer: A natural harbour and port for trade; flat coastal land; jobs in industry, trade and services attracting migrants; transport links (roads, rail, airport) connecting the whole country; and administrative/commercial functions. Each reason pulls more people, which creates more jobs — growth feeds growth.
Guide's extra step (not book text): Count four reasons, one per sentence: a natural harbour and port, flat coastal land, jobs attracting migrants, and transport links to the whole country.
Answer: Zone land: homes away from workshops; protect farmland and water sources; build a proper water supply, waste collection and drains; keep a park and playground; plan roads and a bus stop before houses sprawl. Planning now is cheaper than fixing slums later.
Guide's extra step (not book text): Answer as a planner's list of four steps: zone homes away from workshops, protect farmland and water sources, arrange transport and waste services, and keep parks and affordable homes in the plan.
This chapter asked where people choose to live and why. It defined a settlement as any place where people live and work, contrasted villages shaped by farming with cities shaped by trade, industry and services, and listed the functions that give each town its reason to exist — administrative, commercial, industrial, religious, educational, port and tourist. It closed on the problems of cities that grow too fast, and on planning — zoning, transport, water, waste, parks and housing — as the way to keep a growing place liveable.
Revision guidance: Learn functions with examples, not just words: Islamabad for administrative, Faisalabad for industrial, Murree for tourist, Karachi for port. Then, for any fast-growing town, write four planner's steps — zone the land, protect water and farmland, arrange transport, build affordable homes — and you have the long-answer pattern ready.
