This revised page was built from the existing Class 6 Mathematics library master chapter (chapter-1-complete-guide-book.html) in the same series. No official Class 6 Mathematics book copy was on disk for a fresh page-by-page check, so no book page numbers are claimed and the exercise below is the master chapter's own SLO-based practice set — NOT the official textbook exercise (the master itself labels it SLO-based, not copied from the book). Section explanations and answers follow the master chapter; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.
A set is a collection of distinct, well-defined objects. The objects are called elements or members. A set is written inside curly brackets, e.g. A = {1, 2, 3, 4}.
Well-defined means we can clearly decide whether something belongs or not. "The five provinces of Pakistan" is a set; "the difficult questions of a test" is not, because "difficult" differs from person to person.
Descriptive form: the set is described in words, e.g. "the set of vowels". Tabular (roster) form: elements are listed, e.g. V = {a, e, i, o, u}.
Set-builder form: elements are described by a rule, e.g. {x | x is a vowel}. The symbol ∈ means "is an element of" and ∉ means "is not an element of": a ∈ V, b ∉ V.
V = {a, e, i, o, u}۔
Empty (null) set: no elements, written ∅ or { }. Finite set: elements can be counted, e.g. {1, 2, 3}. Infinite set: elements cannot be counted, e.g. the set of natural numbers.
Equal sets have exactly the same elements. Equivalent sets have the same number of elements, even if the elements differ. A subset A ⊆ B means every element of A is in B.
Union A ∪ B: all elements of A and B together, without repetition. Example: A = {1, 2, 3}, B = {3, 4} → A ∪ B = {1, 2, 3, 4}.
Intersection A ∩ B: only the common elements. Example: A ∩ B = {3}. Venn diagrams show sets as circles; the overlapping part is the intersection.
یونین A ∪ B: A اور B کے تمام ارکان اکٹھے، بغیر تکرار کے۔ مثال: A = {1, 2, 3}، B = {3, 4} → A ∪ B = {1, 2, 3, 4}۔
A Venn diagram draws a rectangle for the universal set U and circles for sets inside it. Shading shows union, intersection or complement.
Sets appear in daily life: the set of students in a class, the set of even numbers, the set of fruits in a basket. Sorting things into sets is the first step of organising data.

1 Which of these is a set?
Answer: (b) The vowels of the alphabet — Vowels are well-defined; good, tasty and tall are not.
2 If A = {a, e, i, o, u}, then b ∈ A is:
Answer: (b) False — b is not a vowel, so b ∉ A. جواب: b حرف علت نہیں، اس لیے b ∉ A۔
3 What is { } called?
Answer: (b) Empty set — A set with no elements is the empty set.
4 If A = {1, 2, 3} and B = {3, 4}, A ∪ B =
Answer: (b) {1, 2, 3, 4} — Union takes all elements without repetition.
5 A ∩ B for the same sets is:
Answer: (b) {3} — Only 3 is common to both.
Answer: A collection of distinct, well-defined objects, e.g. {2, 4, 6, 8}.
Answer: No, because "naughty" is not well-defined — people disagree about it.
Answer: The set of vowels of the English alphabet.
Answer: Equal sets have the same elements; equivalent sets have only the same number of elements.
Answer: A ∪ B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7} (all elements, no repetition). A ∩ B = {4, 5} (common elements). In a Venn diagram, two overlapping circles: 4 and 5 go in the overlap, 1, 2, 3 in the A-only part, 6, 7 in the B-only part.
Answer: Finite: {days of the week} — countable. Infinite: {natural numbers} — uncountable, never ends. Empty: {months with 32 days} — no such month exists, so the set is ∅.
This chapter builds the language of sets from the ground up: what counts as a set, how to write one three ways, the main kinds of sets, and how union and intersection work — finished with Venn diagrams and everyday examples. Once this language is clear, later chapters that sort and group numbers feel much easier.
Revision guidance: Practise deciding 'set or not a set' out loud with a reason every time, write each set in all three forms, and draw one Venn diagram for every union/intersection question before writing the answer.
