This revised page was built from the existing Class 6 Mathematics library master chapter (chapter-3-complete-guide-book.html) in the same series. No official Class 6 Mathematics book copy was on disk for a fresh page-by-page check, so no book page numbers are claimed and the exercise below is the master chapter's own SLO-based practice set — NOT the official textbook exercise (the master itself labels it SLO-based, not copied from the book). Section explanations and answers follow the master chapter; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.
A factor is a number that divides another number exactly, leaving no remainder. Factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12.
Every number has 1 and itself as factors. Factor pairs multiply to the number: for 12, the pairs are (1, 12), (2, 6), (3, 4).
A prime number has exactly two factors: 1 and itself. Examples: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13. Note: 2 is the only even prime; 1 is neither prime nor composite.
A composite number has more than two factors, e.g. 4 (1, 2, 4), 6, 8, 9, 10. Prime factorisation writes a number as a product of primes: 12 = 2 × 2 × 3.
Multiples of a number are found by multiplying it by 1, 2, 3, ... Multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, ... — they never end.
Every number is a multiple of itself and of 1. Multiples are used for timetables, patterns and common multiples.
HCF (Highest Common Factor) is the largest number that divides two or more numbers exactly. Method: list factors, or use prime factorisation and take common primes.
Example: factors of 12 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12; of 18 = 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18. Common: 1, 2, 3, 6. HCF = 6.
LCM (Lowest Common Multiple) is the smallest number that is a multiple of two or more numbers. Example: multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12, 16...; of 6: 6, 12, 18... LCM = 12.
LCM is used when things repeat together — e.g. two buses leaving together will next leave together after the LCM of their intervals.

1 Factors of 18 are:
Answer: (a) 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18 — All numbers dividing 18 exactly.
2 Which is a prime number?
Answer: (c) 13 — 13 has only factors 1 and 13.
3 HCF of 12 and 18 is:
Answer: (b) 6 — Common factors 1, 2, 3, 6; largest is 6.
4 LCM of 4 and 6 is:
Answer: (b) 12 — Smallest common multiple is 12.
5 Which is neither prime nor composite?
Answer: (b) 1 — 1 has only one factor.
Answer: 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20.
Answer: 36 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 3.
Answer: Factors of 15: 1, 3, 5, 15; of 25: 1, 5, 25. HCF = 5.
Answer: Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24...; of 8: 8, 16, 24... LCM = 24.
Answer: 24 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3; 36 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 3. Common primes: 2 × 2 × 3 = 12 = HCF. LCM takes all primes at highest powers: 2³ × 3² = 8 × 9 = 72.
Answer: Together again after LCM(12, 18). Multiples of 12: 12, 24, 36...; of 18: 18, 36... LCM = 36 minutes.
This chapter is about breaking numbers apart and putting their patterns together: factors, prime and composite numbers, multiples, and then the two great shared values — HCF and LCM. The factor work here is also the quiet preparation for fractions and algebra later on.
Revision guidance: Practise prime factorisation until the tree feels automatic, then solve every HCF/LCM question by the prime-factor method first and check with a short list.
