The media are the channels that carry information to large numbers of people: newspapers, radio, television, and now websites, social media and video platforms. The word 'media' is plural; one channel is a 'medium'.
Media are often called the fourth pillar of the state, after the legislature, executive and judiciary — because an informed public can hold power to account.
Good media informs (news, weather, health advice), educates (documentaries, lessons), entertains (drama, music, sport) and watches power (reporting corruption and injustice). During floods or epidemics, media warnings save lives.
Media also give ordinary people a voice: a farmer's problem or a student's achievement can reach the whole country through a news story.
Fake news is false information dressed up as news, spread for clicks, money or politics. Warning signs: shocking headlines, no named source, blurry or old photos, and messages urging 'forward to everyone quickly!'
Check before sharing: is it on a trusted news site? Does the photo match the story? Does another reliable source report it? If unsure, do not forward — forwarding a lie makes you part of it.
In the active voice, the doer is the subject: 'Reporters exposed the scandal.' In the passive voice, the action's receiver is the subject: 'The scandal was exposed by reporters.' News often uses passive voice when the doer is unknown: 'The road was closed.'
Form: be + past participle — is/are/was/were + exposed, closed, reported. Use active voice for clear, strong writing; use passive when the action matters more than the doer.
مجہول میں عمل کا وصول کنندہ فاعل ہوتا ہے: 'The scandal was exposed by reporters.'
شکل: be + ماضی بعید — is/are/was/were + exposed, closed, reported۔ واضح، مضبوط تحریر کے لیے معروف استعمال کریں؛ مجہول اس وقت جب عمل کرنے والے سے زیادہ اہم ہو۔
Wise users follow a few rules: get news from more than one trusted source, limit screen time, never believe a forwarded message at once, protect privacy (no personal photos to strangers), and be kind online — words hurt as much as actions.
Students can also make media: a school newsletter, a wall magazine, or a short video on a local issue. Making media teaches how easily stories can be shaped — and why honesty matters.
Key points to remember — 1. What Is the Media?, 2. How Media Helps Society, 3. Fake News and How to Spot It and 4. Grammar Focus: Active and Passive Voice. These four topics are the chapter's take-away ideas: read them in order, then close the page and say them back from memory.
Exercise Questions — with Answers (from the library masters). These are SLO-based practice questions from the library masters, NOT the textbook's printed exercise — use your school book for the printed exercise. The English textbook prints no answer keys, so these answers are the masters' model answers, not official keys, and are kept as written in the masters. The chapter has 5 multiple-choice, 3 short-answer, 2 long-answer and 1 Think question — all 11 are attended below.
an informed public holds power to account — Informed citizens can question rulers, so media check power like the other three pillars.
a shocking headline with no source — Shocking headlines with no verifiable source are classic fake-news signs.
Reporters exposed the scandal.'
The scandal was exposed by reporters. — Passive form: was + past participle (exposed), with the receiver as subject.
Spreading rumours for clicks — Good media inform, educate, entertain and check power — not spread rumours.
check it on trusted sources — Checking on trusted sources stops fake news from spreading through you.
Inform, educate, entertain, and watch power (hold rulers to account).
The road was closed by the police.'
The police closed the road.
The police closed the road.
Any two: shocking headline, no named source, old/blurry photo, 'forward quickly' pressure.
Media receive official warnings, broadcast them widely and quickly, people move to high ground and shelters, and rescue teams reach affected areas — information moves faster than water.
Because often the doer is unknown or less important than the event: 'The bridge was damaged in the storm' — what matters is the bridge, not who damaged it.
کیونکہ اکثر کرنے والا نامعلوم یا واقعے سے کم اہم ہوتا ہے: 'The bridge was damaged in the storm' — اہم پل ہے، نقصان پہنچانے والا نہیں۔
Do not forward it. Check the school's official notice, a trusted news site, or ask a teacher. If nothing confirms it, tell classmates it is unverified and ignore it.
The media — newspapers, radio, television, websites and social media — inform, educate, entertain and watch power. The chapter warns about fake news and its warning signs, teaches active and passive voice, and ends with rules for a wise media user: check sources, limit screen time, protect privacy, be kind.
Revision guidance: List four fake-news warning signs from memory, then change three active sentences to passive before the exercise.
