Our solar system has one star, the Sun, and eight planets orbiting it: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The four inner planets are small and rocky; the four outer planets are giant gas and ice worlds.
Earth is the only known planet with life — it has liquid water, oxygen-rich air and a temperature range that suits living things. It is the third planet from the Sun.
Day and night happen because Earth spins (rotates) on its axis once every 24 hours: the side facing the Sun has day, the other side has night.
Seasons happen because Earth's axis is tilted as it orbits the Sun once a year. When your hemisphere tilts towards the Sun, days are longer and it is summer; when it tilts away, it is winter.
The Moon is Earth's natural satellite. It orbits Earth in about 27 days and spins so we always see the same face. Its phases (new, crescent, half, full) depend on how much of its sunlit side faces us.
The Moon's gravity pulls ocean water towards it, creating tides — the regular rise and fall of sea level, about twice a day. The Sun also affects tides, but less strongly.
Artificial satellites are machines placed in orbit around Earth. Communication satellites carry TV, phone and internet signals; weather satellites watch clouds and storms; navigation satellites (GPS) tell receivers their exact position.
Pakistan's space programme (SUPARCO) has launched satellites for communication and remote sensing — watching crops, floods and land use from space.
Humans explore space with telescopes, robotic probes, rovers and crewed missions. Telescopes gather faint light from distant stars; probes have visited every planet; rovers drive on Mars; astronauts have walked on the Moon.
Space exploration gives us new knowledge, better materials, weather warnings and disaster monitoring — but it is expensive and must avoid polluting space with debris.

MCQ 1: The third planet from the Sun is…
Earth — Order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars…
MCQ 2: Day and night are caused by Earth's…
rotation on its axis — One rotation takes 24 hours, giving one day-night cycle.
MCQ 3: Seasons are mainly caused by…
Earth's tilted axis — The tilt makes sunlight fall more directly on one hemisphere at a time.
MCQ 4: Tides are mainly caused by…
the Moon's gravity — The Moon's gravity pulls ocean water into bulges that we see as tides.
MCQ 5: GPS satellites are used for…
finding exact position — GPS receivers use satellite signals to work out their location.
Short Q1: Why do we always see the same face of the Moon?
The Moon spins once in the same time it orbits Earth once, so the same side stays facing us.
Short Q2: Why is summer hotter than winter, even though Earth is not much nearer the Sun?
Because the tilted hemisphere gets more direct sunlight and longer days in summer.
Short Q3: Name three uses of artificial satellites.
Any three: communication, weather watching, navigation (GPS), remote sensing, TV broadcasting.
Long Q1: Explain the difference between rotation and revolution, giving one effect of each.
Rotation is spinning on the axis (24 h → day and night). Revolution is orbiting the Sun (1 year → seasons, with the tilt).
Long Q2: Describe how the Moon's phases change over a month.
As the Moon orbits, the sunlit part facing Earth grows from new → crescent → half → gibbous → full, then shrinks back again.
Think! 1: A student says tides happen because the Moon 'heats' the sea. Correct this idea.
Tides are caused by the Moon's gravity pulling water towards it, not by heat; the pull creates bulges of water that move as Earth rotates.
Solar system (1): one star, the Sun, and eight planets orbiting it — Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune; the four inner planets are small and rocky, the four outer are giant gas and ice worlds; Earth, third from the Sun, is the only known planet with life — liquid water, oxygen-rich air, suitable temperatures. Day/night/seasons (2): day and night come from Earth's rotation on its axis once every 24 hours (facing side = day); seasons come from the tilted axis as Earth orbits the Sun once a year (hemisphere tilted towards the Sun = longer days, summer). Moon/tides (3): the Moon, Earth's natural satellite, orbits in about 27 days and always shows the same face; phases (new, crescent, half, full) depend on how much of its sunlit side faces us; the Moon's gravity pulls ocean water into tides about twice a day; the Sun affects tides less strongly. Satellites (4): communication satellites carry TV, phone and internet signals; weather satellites watch clouds and storms; navigation satellites (GPS) give exact positions; Pakistan's SUPARCO has launched satellites for communication and remote sensing (crops, floods, land use). Exploring space (5): telescopes gather faint starlight, probes have visited every planet, rovers drive on Mars, astronauts have walked on the Moon; benefits include new knowledge, better materials, weather warnings and disaster monitoring — but it is expensive and must avoid space debris pollution.
Long Q2 (Moon phases over a month)
