When you breathe in, air enters through the nose (which warms, moistens and filters it), passes down the trachea (windpipe), and divides into two bronchi going into the lungs. Inside the lungs the bronchi branch into tiny tubes ending in air sacs called alveoli.
Breathing in is inhalation and breathing out is exhalation. The ribs move out and the diaphragm flattens to draw air in; they relax to push air out.
Alveoli are surrounded by tiny blood capillaries. Oxygen from the air passes into the blood, and carbon dioxide from the blood passes into the alveoli to be breathed out. The huge number of alveoli gives a very large surface for this exchange.
Oxygen is carried by red blood cells (haemoglobin) to every cell, where it is used to release energy from food. This is why we breathe faster during exercise.
The heart is a muscular pump about the size of your fist, in the centre-left of the chest. It has four chambers: two upper atria and two lower ventricles. Valves stop blood flowing backwards.
The right side pumps blood to the lungs to collect oxygen; the left side pumps oxygen-rich blood to the whole body. This is called double circulation.
Three vessel types carry blood: arteries carry blood away from the heart (usually oxygen-rich, thick walls, pulse), veins bring blood back (with valves), and capillaries are hair-thin vessels where exchange with cells happens.
Blood is made of red cells (carry oxygen), white cells (fight germs), platelets (clotting) and plasma (the liquid that carries everything, including food and hormones).
Regular exercise strengthens the heart, a balanced diet low in excess fat protects arteries, and avoiding smoke keeps lungs clean. Smoking damages alveoli and narrows vessels, raising the risk of heart and lung disease.
Check your pulse: after exercise it rises, then falls back as you rest — a fit heart recovers faster. See a doctor for chest pain or lasting breathlessness.
MCQ 1: Gas exchange in the lungs happens in the…
alveoli — Alveoli are the tiny air sacs where oxygen and CO2 are exchanged.
MCQ 2: Which chamber pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body?
Left ventricle — The left ventricle is the strongest chamber and pumps blood around the body.
MCQ 3: Arteries are different from veins because arteries…
carry blood away from the heart — Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure, so their walls are thick.
MCQ 4: Haemoglobin is found in…
red cells — Red blood cells contain haemoglobin, which binds oxygen.
MCQ 5: During inhalation, the diaphragm…
flattens downward — The diaphragm contracts and flattens, increasing chest volume and drawing air in.
Short Q1: Why do we breathe faster during exercise?
Muscles need more oxygen and produce more CO2, so breathing speeds up to supply and remove gases faster.
Short Q2: What is double circulation?
Blood passes through the heart twice per circuit: once to the lungs and once to the body.
Short Q3: Name the three blood vessels and one difference between them.
Arteries (away, thick walls), veins (back, valves), capillaries (thin, exchange).
Long Q1: Trace the journey of an oxygen molecule from the nose to a muscle cell.
Nose → trachea → bronchi → alveoli → blood (haemoglobin) → heart → arteries → capillaries → muscle cell, where it releases energy from food.
Long Q2: Explain why smoking harms both the respiratory and circulatory systems.
Smoke damages alveoli (less gas exchange) and narrows/damages vessels, forcing the heart to work harder and raising disease risk.
Think! 1: A patient has very low red blood cells. What symptoms would you expect, and why?
Tiredness and breathlessness, because less haemoglobin means less oxygen reaches the cells for energy.
Breathing (1): air enters through the nose (warms, moistens, filters), goes down the trachea into two bronchi and reaches the alveoli; ribs move out and the diaphragm flattens to draw air in. Gas exchange (2): in the alveoli, oxygen passes into blood and carbon dioxide passes out; red cells carry oxygen (haemoglobin) to cells, which use it to release energy — so we breathe faster in exercise. Heart (3): a fist-sized muscular pump with four chambers (two atria, two ventricles) and valves; the right side pumps blood to the lungs, the left side pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body — double circulation. Vessels and blood (4): arteries carry blood away (thick walls), veins bring it back (valves), capillaries are hair-thin exchange vessels; blood = red cells, white cells, platelets, plasma. Health (5): exercise strengthens the heart, a low-fat balanced diet protects arteries, smoke damages alveoli and narrows vessels; a fit heart's pulse recovers faster after exercise.
