All matter — your book, water, air — is made of tiny particles called atoms. An atom is so small that millions fit across a full stop. Atoms of the same kind form an element (e.g. oxygen, iron, gold).
In the centre of the atom is a tiny, dense nucleus. Around it, much smaller particles move in shells, like planets at a great distance from the Sun — most of an atom is empty space.
Protons are positively charged (+) and live in the nucleus. Neutrons have no charge (0) and also live in the nucleus. Electrons are negatively charged (−) and move in shells around the nucleus.
In a neutral atom, the number of protons equals the number of electrons, so the charges cancel. Protons and neutrons are much heavier than electrons.
The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons in an atom. It decides which element the atom is: every carbon atom has 6 protons, every oxygen atom has 8.
The mass number (A) is protons + neutrons. So neutrons = A − Z. For example, carbon-12 has 6 protons, 6 neutrons and 6 electrons.
Electrons live in shells around the nucleus. The first shell holds at most 2 electrons, the second at most 8, the third at most 8 (for class 7). Electrons fill inner shells first.
Example: sodium (Z = 11) has the arrangement 2, 8, 1 — one electron in its outer shell. Atoms with a full outer shell (like neon, 2, 8) are very stable and rarely react.
Isotopes are atoms of the same element (same protons) with different numbers of neutrons, so different mass numbers. Carbon-12 and carbon-14 are isotopes: both have 6 protons, but 6 and 8 neutrons.
Isotopes of an element behave almost identically in chemical reactions, because chemistry depends on electrons. Some isotopes are radioactive and used in medicine and dating old objects.

Short Q1: Why is an atom electrically neutral although it has charged particles?
Because protons (+) and electrons (−) are equal in number, their charges cancel.
Short Q2: Give the electron arrangement of oxygen (Z = 8).
2, 6 — two electrons in the first shell and six in the second.
Short Q3: What decides the identity of an element?
Its atomic number — the number of protons.
Long Q1: An atom has 17 protons and 20 neutrons. Find its atomic number, mass number and electron arrangement.
Z = 17, A = 37, electrons = 17, arrangement 2, 8, 7 (this is chlorine).
Z = 17، A = 37، الیکٹران = 17، ترتیب 2، 8، 7 (یہ کلورین ہے)۔
Long Q2: Explain why isotopes of the same element react in the same way.
Chemical reactions involve electrons, and isotopes have the same number of electrons and the same arrangement.
Think! 1: A scientist says: 'Most of the atom is empty space.' Is this true? Justify with the atomic model.
Yes: the nucleus is tiny compared with the whole atom, and electrons occupy shells far away, so most of the volume is empty.
Atoms (1): all matter is made of atoms; the same kind of atoms form an element; a tiny dense nucleus sits at the centre with electrons in shells around it — most of an atom is empty space. Particles (2): protons (+) and neutrons (0) live in the nucleus; electrons (−) move in shells; in a neutral atom protons = electrons, and protons/neutrons are much heavier than electrons. Z and A (3): atomic number Z = number of protons and decides the element (carbon always 6, oxygen always 8); mass number A = protons + neutrons, so neutrons = A − Z (carbon-12: 6p, 6n, 6e). Shells (4): first shell max 2, second max 8, third max 8 (class 7); inner shells fill first — sodium (Z = 11) is 2, 8, 1; a full outer shell (neon 2, 8) is very stable. Isotopes (5): same element (same protons), different neutrons, different mass numbers — carbon-12 and carbon-14; they react alike because chemistry depends on electrons; some isotopes are radioactive and used in medicine and dating.
