Atoms bond to become more stable — most want a full outer shell of electrons, like the noble gases (neon, argon). They achieve this by giving away, taking, or sharing electrons.
The force holding atoms together in a compound is a chemical bond. The two main types in class 7 are ionic and covalent bonds.
In an ionic bond, a metal atom gives electrons to a non-metal atom. Both become charged particles called ions: the giver becomes positive (cation), the taker becomes negative (anion), and opposite charges attract.
Example: sodium (2,8,1) gives one electron to chlorine (2,8,7). Both get full outer shells and form sodium chloride — common salt. Ionic compounds are usually solid crystals with high melting points.
In a covalent bond, atoms share pairs of electrons so each gets a full outer shell. The shared electrons count for both atoms.
Examples: two hydrogen atoms share one pair to make H₂; oxygen atoms share two pairs to make O₂; carbon shares four pairs in methane (CH₄). Most gases and organic compounds are covalent.
A molecule is two or more atoms bonded together. H₂ and O₂ are molecules of elements; H₂O and CO₂ are molecules of compounds (different elements bonded).
A compound has properties different from its elements: hydrogen burns and oxygen helps burning, but water (H₂O) puts fires out. That is why a compound is a new substance.
Metals (iron, copper, sodium) are shiny, conduct heat and electricity, and tend to lose electrons — so they form ionic bonds with non-metals. Non-metals (oxygen, chlorine, sulphur) tend to gain or share electrons.
Metals are malleable (can be hammered) and ductile (can be drawn into wires). Non-metals are usually dull, brittle and poor conductors — except graphite, which conducts electricity.

MCQ 1: An ionic bond forms when…
electrons are transferred — Ionic bonding is the transfer of electrons from a metal to a non-metal.
MCQ 2: In NaCl, sodium becomes…
Na+ — Sodium loses one electron, so it becomes a positive ion, Na+.
MCQ 3: Oxygen gas (O₂) is held together by a…
covalent bond — The two oxygen atoms share two pairs of electrons — a covalent double bond.
MCQ 4: Which property fits an ionic compound?
High melting point crystal — Ionic compounds form strong crystal lattices with high melting points.
MCQ 5: Water puts out fire although hydrogen burns. This shows…
a compound differs from its elements — A compound is a new substance with its own properties.
Short Q1: Why do atoms form bonds?
To get a full, stable outer shell of electrons, like noble gases.
Short Q2: How does magnesium (2,8,2) form an ionic compound with oxygen (2,6)?
Magnesium gives its 2 outer electrons to oxygen; Mg²+ and O²− attract to form MgO.
Short Q3: Why is graphite an exception among non-metals?
Although a non-metal, its structure lets electrons move, so it conducts electricity.
Long Q1: Draw and explain the formation of sodium chloride using electron arrangements.
Na (2,8,1) → Na+ (2,8) + e−; Cl (2,8,7) + e− → Cl− (2,8,8); the opposite ions attract strongly into a crystal.
Long Q2: Compare ionic and covalent bonding under: how electrons are used, and two properties of the compounds.
Ionic: transfer, high melting point crystals, often soluble. Covalent: sharing, low melting/boiling points, often gases or liquids.
Think! 1: A student claims table salt is just 'sodium mixed with chlorine'. Correct the student.
Salt is a compound, not a mixture: sodium and chlorine react, transfer electrons, and form NaCl with completely new properties — it is edible, unlike poisonous chlorine gas and reactive sodium.
Why bond? (1): atoms bond to become stable — most want a full outer shell like the noble gases (neon, argon) — by giving away, taking, or sharing electrons; the force holding atoms in a compound is a chemical bond. Ionic (2): a metal gives electrons to a non-metal; both become ions — giver positive (cation), taker negative (anion) — and opposite charges attract; sodium (2,8,1) gives one electron to chlorine (2,8,7), both get full shells and form NaCl; ionic compounds are usually solid crystals with high melting points. Covalent (3): atoms share electron pairs so each gets a full shell; the shared electrons count for both — H₂ (1 pair), O₂ (2 pairs), CH₄ (4 pairs); most gases and organic compounds are covalent. Molecules/compounds (4): a molecule is two or more bonded atoms; H₂, O₂ are molecules of elements, H₂O, CO₂ are molecules of compounds; a compound has different properties from its elements — hydrogen burns, oxygen helps burning, but water puts fires out. Metals/non-metals (5): metals (iron, copper, sodium) are shiny, conduct heat and electricity, lose electrons and form ionic bonds; non-metals (oxygen, chlorine, sulphur) gain or share electrons, are usually dull, brittle, poor conductors — except graphite, which conducts.
