1. Why Do Atoms Bond?
🏷 Tags: chemical bond, full outer shell, noble gases, stability, give take share
ENGLISH

Atoms bond to become more stable — most want a full outer shell of electrons, like the noble gases (neon, argon). They achieve this by giving away, taking, or sharing electrons.

The force holding atoms together in a compound is a chemical bond. The two main types in class 7 are ionic and covalent bonds.

Give electrons→Take electrons→Share electrons
2. Ionic Bonds — Give and Takeآئنک بندھن — دینا اور لینا
🏷 Tags: ionic bond, cation, anion, sodium chloride, NaCl, crystal, high melting point
ENGLISH

In an ionic bond, a metal atom gives electrons to a non-metal atom. Both become charged particles called ions: the giver becomes positive (cation), the taker becomes negative (anion), and opposite charges attract.

Example: sodium (2,8,1) gives one electron to chlorine (2,8,7). Both get full outer shells and form sodium chloride — common salt. Ionic compounds are usually solid crystals with high melting points.

Na gives 1 e−→Cl takes 1 e−→NaCl formed
3. Covalent Bonds — Sharing
🏷 Tags: covalent bond, shared pair, H2, O2, CH4, methane, double bond
ENGLISH

In a covalent bond, atoms share pairs of electrons so each gets a full outer shell. The shared electrons count for both atoms.

Examples: two hydrogen atoms share one pair to make H₂; oxygen atoms share two pairs to make O₂; carbon shares four pairs in methane (CH₄). Most gases and organic compounds are covalent.

H₂: 1 shared pairO₂: 2 shared pairsCH₄: 4 shared pairsWater H₂O: shared
4. Molecules and Compounds
🏷 Tags: molecule, compound, H2O, CO2, new substance, properties differ
ENGLISH

A molecule is two or more atoms bonded together. H₂ and O₂ are molecules of elements; H₂O and CO₂ are molecules of compounds (different elements bonded).

A compound has properties different from its elements: hydrogen burns and oxygen helps burning, but water (H₂O) puts fires out. That is why a compound is a new substance.

H burns→O helps burning→H₂O puts out fire
5. Metals, Non-Metals and Bonding
🏷 Tags: metals, non-metals, malleable, ductile, graphite, conductor
ENGLISH

Metals (iron, copper, sodium) are shiny, conduct heat and electricity, and tend to lose electrons — so they form ionic bonds with non-metals. Non-metals (oxygen, chlorine, sulphur) tend to gain or share electrons.

Metals are malleable (can be hammered) and ductile (can be drawn into wires). Non-metals are usually dull, brittle and poor conductors — except graphite, which conducts electricity.

Metals lose e−Non-metals gain/shareIonic: metal+non-metalCovalent: share

THINK & ANSWER

Think! 1: A student claims table salt is just 'sodium mixed with chlorine'. Correct the student.

Answer / جواب

Salt is a compound, not a mixture: sodium and chlorine react, transfer electrons, and form NaCl with completely new properties — it is edible, unlike poisonous chlorine gas and reactive sodium.
