ENGLISH

From the 8th to the 13th century, Muslims led the world in science, medicine, mathematics and philosophy — Baghdad, Cordoba and Cairo were centres of learning. From the 18th century, that lead was lost: European powers industrialised, colonised Muslim lands, and Muslim societies fell behind.

The lesson asks: how did a civilisation that taught Europe fall behind Europe? Answers: internal division, neglect of science, and colonial rule that served colonisers, not locals.

2. The Awakening Begins
🏷 Tags: awakening, reform, revival
ENGLISH

Awakening (bedaari) means Muslims waking to their decline and asking: what went wrong, and how do we rise again? It began in the 19th century, when reformers travelled, wrote and taught that Islam and modern science are not enemies.

The awakening had two wings: reforming religion (returning to the Quran and Sunnah, away from superstition) and adopting modern education (science, English, technology).

Is tasveer se samjho:

3. Reformers of the Subcontinent
🏷 Tags: Shah Waliullah, Sir Syed, reformers
ENGLISH

In the subcontinent, Shah Waliullah (1703–1762) translated the Quran into Persian so ordinary people could understand it, and called for unity against division. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan (1817–1898) founded the Aligarh movement: modern education for Muslims, including science and English.

Later, Allama Iqbal gave Muslims self-respect (khudi) through poetry, and Quaid-e-Azam turned awakening into a political movement that created Pakistan.

4. Awakening Beyond the Subcontinent
🏷 Tags: beyond subcontinent, Jamaluddin Afghani, reform
ENGLISH

Beyond the subcontinent: Jamaluddin Afghani preached Muslim unity (pan-Islamism) across Egypt, Iran and Turkey; Muhammad Abduh reformed Al-Azhar in Egypt, teaching that reason and revelation agree; Mustafa Kemal Ataturk built modern Turkey — a different answer, secular modernisation.

Students compare: reformers agreed on education and unity, but differed on how much of tradition to keep — a debate that continues today.

Afghani: unity→Abduh: reason→Ataturk: secular↓Debate continues
Is tasveer se samjho:

5. The Awakening Today
🏷 Tags: awakening today, education, youth
ENGLISH

Today's awakening continues: Muslim countries invest in universities, science parks and technology, while debating how to keep faith and adopt modernity together. Pakistan's own task, the lesson says, is the same: education first, unity second, and superstition nowhere.

Students end by writing: 'My awakening' — one superstition I will drop, one science I will learn, one unity I will build.

Answer / جواب

Internal division, neglect of science, and colonial rule serving colonisers, not locals.

Short Q3: How did Afghani, Abduh and Ataturk differ?

Answer / جواب

They agreed on education and unity but differed on how much tradition to keep: Afghani (unity), Abduh (reason + revelation), Ataturk (secular modernisation).

LONG QUESTIONS

Long Q1: Explain why 'Islam and modern science are not enemies' was a revolutionary idea in the 19th century.

Answer / جواب

Because many then believed faith required rejecting new learning, or that new learning required abandoning faith; reformers showed the Quran commands reflection and that early Muslims led science — so adopting science was returning to Islam, not leaving it.

Long Q2: Write 'My awakening': one superstition to drop, one science to learn, one unity to build.

Answer / جواب

A good answer names all three concretely and personally (e.g. drop a lucky-charm belief, learn biology, unite two quarrelling classmates).

THINK & ANSWER

Think! 1: A classmate says 'old books are enough; we do not need science'. Answer using the awakening.

Answer / جواب

The reformers' answer: early Muslims led science and the Quran commands reflection; rejecting science caused the very decline the awakening fights. Old books guide values; science builds the world — both are needed.

ENGLISH

This chapter traced a rise and a fall and a rising again: greatness weakened when knowledge and unity weakened; then reformers like Shah Waliullah (1703–1762) and Sir Syed Ahmad Khan (1817–1898) woke the subcontinent, reformers woke other Muslim lands too, and today the awakening continues through education and hard work. Topics: Decline After Greatness, The Awakening Begins, Reformers of the Subcontinent, Awakening Beyond the Subcontinent, The Awakening Today.
