ENGLISH

In the Islamic golden age, Muslim physicians built the world's first hospitals with wards, pharmacies and medical schools. Al-Razi (Rhazes) distinguished smallpox from measles; Ibn Sina (Avicenna) wrote the Canon of Medicine, taught in Europe for 600 years.

Hospitals were open to all — rich and poor, Muslim and non-Muslim — and free. Healing was charity as well as science.

ENGLISH

Al-Razi (865–925), born in Rayy (Persia), wrote over 200 works, used alcohol as an antiseptic, and controlled diet before drugs. Ibn Sina (980–1037), born near Bukhara, wrote the Canon at 21 and described contagious diseases, quarantine and surgery.

Their method: observe, record, test — the scientific method, centuries before Europe adopted it.

3. Hospitals and Medical Schools
🏷 Tags: hospitals, medical schools, bimaristan
ENGLISH

Great hospitals: Baghdad (founded 805), Cairo (Al-Mansuri, 1284, with 8,000 patients capacity in legend), Damascus (Al-Nuri) and Cordoba. They had separate wards for men and women, for fevers and surgery, and pharmacies that made medicines.

Students trained by following a master physician, then took an examination — the ancestor of today's medical degree.

4. Medical Services Today
🏷 Tags: medical services today, doctors, clinics
ENGLISH

Today's Muslim world has modern hospitals in Riyadh, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur and Karachi — but also great gaps: rural areas without doctors, and countries like Yemen and Somalia where war has destroyed health systems.

Pakistan's system: government hospitals (free but crowded), private hospitals (costly), and charity hospitals (like SIUT and Indus) that treat the poor free — continuing the golden-age tradition of healing as charity.

5. Health Lessons for Students
🏷 Tags: health lessons, hygiene, diet, students
ENGLISH

The chapter's health lessons: prevention beats cure — clean water, vaccination, balanced food and exercise prevent most disease. And cleanliness is half of faith: washing hands, brushing teeth, and keeping surroundings clean are religious duties, not only hygiene.

Students plan a school health week: handwashing demo, vaccination awareness, and a cleanliness drive.

SHORT QUESTIONS

Short Q1: What method did Al-Razi and Ibn Sina use?

Answer / جواب

Observe, record, test — the scientific method.

Short Q2: Name three golden-age hospital cities.

Answer / جواب

Any three: Baghdad, Cairo, Damascus, Cordoba.

Short Q3: Why is cleanliness called 'half of faith'?

Answer / جواب

Because Islam treats washing, brushing and clean surroundings as religious duties, not only hygiene — and prevention of disease begins with cleanliness.

LONG QUESTIONS

Long Q1: Explain how golden-age hospitals were both science and charity.

Answer / جواب

Science: wards, pharmacies, trained physicians, examinations, recorded observations. Charity: open to all, free treatment — healing the poor was worship, so science served humanity, not profit.

Long Q2: Plan a school health week with three activities.

Answer / جواب

A good plan: handwashing demo, vaccination awareness talks, cleanliness drive — each with a day, a responsible group and a measurable result.

THINK & ANSWER

Think! 1: A friend says 'old Muslim medicine is history; modern medicine replaced it'. Is he right?

Answer / جواب

Partly: modern medicine advanced far beyond the Canon. But the golden age founded hospitals, pharmacies, examinations and the scientific method itself — modern medicine stands on those institutions, and its charity tradition continues in hospitals like SIUT.
