This lesson describes Kashmir's natural beauty — its valleys, rivers, chinars and mountains — alongside the decades of oppression its people have faced. Beauty and suffering live side by side in the same valley.
The title is a call to the flag: 'Flutter, O flag, in the valley of Kashmir' — keep flying, keep hope alive, even under oppression.
The lesson focuses on the revocation of Kashmir's special status on 5 August 2019, when India removed the constitutional arrangement that had given Jammu and Kashmir its special position.
Afterwards, the lesson describes mass arrests, long curfews and repeated lockdowns imposed on Kashmiris, and the cutting of communications that left families unable to reach each other.
Kashmiris continue to demand the right to self-determination (haq-e-khud iradiyat) — the right of a people to choose their own political future. The United Nations promised a plebiscite, a vote, for Kashmiris long ago.
Students learn the word 'plebiscite': a direct vote of a whole people on a question about their future. It is the peaceful, democratic way to settle such disputes.
Kashmir Solidarity Day is observed every year on 5 February, since 1990. Pakistanis express solidarity with Kashmiris through rallies, speeches, human chains and a minute of silence.
Solidarity means: we have not forgotten you, and your struggle is our struggle. For students, it means learning the issue, speaking about it fairly, and praying for peace.
The lesson ends in hope, not despair: valleys outlive occupations, and peoples who hold to their cause with patience have often won their rights in the end. The flag in the title keeps flying because hope keeps flying.
Students are asked to write a message of solidarity to a Kashmiri student their age — and to think what peace would mean for children on both sides.
