SLO-based practice chapter: no clean official PCTB book PDF for Class 8 Computer Science was available at build time, so this chapter is built from the PCTB/SNC Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) for Class 8 Computer Science. It is practice material for the curriculum topics — NOT the official book exercise. When the official book is obtained, its exercise will replace this practice set. Nothing here is presented as a book page or an official question.
Chapter titles follow the PCTB/SNC curriculum progression for this class. All questions and answers below are original practice material written for this guide.
Data communication is the transfer of data between devices. It needs a sender, a receiver, a message, a medium (twisted-pair cable, coaxial cable, fibre-optic cable, or wireless) and a protocol. Bandwidth is how much data a medium can carry per second.
Fibre-optic cable carries signals as light through thin glass strands: it is very fast and works over long distances, which is why it connects cities and countries under land and sea.
Networks are grouped by size. A LAN (Local Area Network) covers a small area such as a home, school or office. A MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) covers a city, for example a city's cable TV or university network. A WAN (Wide Area Network) covers countries or the world — the internet is the largest WAN.
The bigger the network, the more equipment and agreements it needs, and the more it depends on public infrastructure such as fibre lines and satellites.
The internet is a network of networks: millions of smaller networks joined by common protocols, so a phone in Lahore can reach a server in another country in a fraction of a second. It carries the web, email, video calls and cloud services.
The Internet of Things (IoT) extends the internet to everyday things: sensors in a fridge, a watch or a tractor report data, and software acts on it — for example, a soil sensor telling a farmer when to water a field.
A network is only useful if it is safe. Good practice: a firewall to control traffic, strong passwords and updates on every device, and care about what is shared — a school network should not carry personal photos or passwords in plain messages.
If a network behaves strangely — very slow, unknown devices connected, files changed — report it to the teacher or administrator at once instead of trying to fix it alone.
اس chapter کی exercise SLO-based practice ہے — MCQs, short اور long سوال اس guide کے لیے لکھے گئے ہیں, کتاب کی official exercise نہیں.
1. Which medium carries signals as light?
Answer: (c) — Fibre-optic cable carries signals as light through thin glass strands.
2. A school network covering one building is a:
Answer: (c) — A LAN covers a small area such as a home, school or office.
3. The internet is best described as:
Answer: (b) — The internet joins millions of smaller networks with common protocols.
4. IoT means:
Answer: (a) — IoT is the Internet of Things: everyday devices that sense and share data.
5. Which is a good network safety habit?
Answer: (b) — Updates fix security faults; sharing passwords and risky clicks do the opposite.
6. Bandwidth means:
Answer: (b) — Bandwidth is the data-carrying capacity of a medium per second.
Answer: Sender, receiver, message, transmission medium, and protocol.
Answer: LAN covers a small area (home, school, office) and is privately run; WAN covers countries or the world, uses public infrastructure, and the internet is the largest WAN.
Answer: It carries signals as light, so it is very fast, suffers little signal loss over distance, and is not affected by electrical interference like copper cables.
Answer: IoT is the network of everyday devices that sense and share data. Farming example: a soil-moisture sensor tells a farmer when a field needs water.
Answer: Report it to the teacher or network administrator at once, instead of trying to fix it alone or ignoring it.
Answer: LAN: a school or home network covering one building. MAN: a network covering a city, such as a city's university or cable network. WAN: a network covering countries or the world; the internet is the largest WAN. Size decides cost, equipment and management: LANs are simple and private, WANs need public infrastructure and agreements between providers.
Answer: Data communication transfers data between devices. The sender creates the message; the message is the data itself; the medium (cable or wireless) carries it; the receiver gets it; and the protocol is the agreed set of rules so both sides understand the format, timing and error handling. Without any one component, communication fails or is misunderstood.
Answer: The internet connects people to information, services, education and each other across the world, and supports business and government. Its risks include unsafe content, scams, privacy loss and over-dependence. Safe use — strong passwords, verified sources, privacy settings and reporting problems — lets users gain the benefits while limiting the risks.
Data communication needs a sender, message, medium, receiver and protocol; networks grow from LAN to MAN to WAN; the internet joins them all, IoT extends them to everyday things, and safety habits — firewalls, passwords, updates — keep them trustworthy.
