No official Class 8 General Science book was available on disk while building it, so no book page numbers are claimed here, and the exercise below is the library master’s exercise — it is NOT presented as the official book exercise and was not re-checked against the official book.
Ecology is the study of the relationships between living organisms and their environment. An ecosystem includes all the living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) things in an area and how they interact.
A food chain shows who eats whom in a straight line: producer → consumer → decomposer. A food web is many connected food chains, which is closer to real nature. Energy flows from the Sun through producers to consumers, and some energy is lost at every step.
Biotic factors are living things such as plants, animals and microbes. Abiotic factors are non-living things such as light, temperature, water, air and soil. Both together decide which organisms can live in a habitat.
Ecosystems stay balanced when populations, food and resources are in balance. Pollution, deforestation and overhunting disturb this balance. Protecting habitats, planting trees and reducing waste help to keep ecological balance.
1.1 What is ecology?
Answer: The study of relationships between organisms and their environment.
1.2 Which of these is a producer?
Answer: Grass — producers make their own food by photosynthesis.
1.3 Which is an abiotic factor?
Answer: Soil — it is non-living.
1.4 In a food chain, energy comes first from:
Answer: The Sun — almost all food chains start with sunlight.
1.5 Decomposers are important because they:
Answer: They recycle nutrients from dead matter back to the soil.
1.1 Define ecosystem.
Answer: All living and non-living things in an area plus their interactions.
1.2 Give two biotic and two abiotic factors.
Answer: Biotic: plants, animals. Abiotic: water, air.
1.3 What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?
Answer: A chain is one line of eating; a web is many connected chains.
1.4 Why is energy lost at each step of a food chain?
Answer: Some energy is used for movement, growth and heat, so less passes on.
1.1 Explain a food web with an example from a pond or a field, and show the role of producers, consumers and decomposers.
Answer: Producers (plants/algae) trap sunlight; herbivores eat them; carnivores eat herbivores; decomposers break down dead matter and return nutrients to the soil, so the cycle continues.
1.2 How do human activities disturb ecological balance, and what three steps can protect it?
Answer: Pollution, cutting forests and overhunting remove species and habitats. Protection steps: plant trees, reduce waste and pollution, and protect habitats and wildlife.
Ecology (1) is the study of relationships between living things and their environment; an ecosystem is all the biotic and abiotic things in an area plus their interactions. Food chains and webs (2): a chain shows who eats whom in one line (producer → consumer → decomposer), while a web is many connected chains, closer to real nature; energy flows from the Sun and some is lost at each step. Factors (3): biotic factors are living (plants, animals, microbes) and abiotic factors are non-living (light, temperature, water, air, soil); together they decide which organisms can live in a habitat. Balance (4): ecosystems stay balanced when populations, food and resources are in balance; pollution, deforestation and overhunting disturb it, and planting trees, reducing waste and protecting habitats restore it.
