ABOUT THIS PAGE — PROVENANCE

This page is built from the PunjabTest library master for Class 8 Geography, Chapter 1. No official Class 8 Geography textbook was on disk when it was built, so no official-book page numbers are claimed here. The exercise below is the SLO-based practice exercise from the library master, not the official textbook exercise — use your school book for the official exercise. Chapter order follows the PCTB Geography VI–VIII curriculum for Grade VIII; PECTAA has listed a revised Geography-8 for 2026–27, so if your school book reorders or renames chapters, follow your school book.

ENGLISH

A map is a flat drawing of an area, reduced by a scale. Diagrams (graphs, cross-sections, flow diagrams) show one idea clearly — a population graph, a river's cross-section, a cycle. Geographers choose the tool that answers their question best.

Think of it this way: if you want to find your school on a paper, you need a map, because a map shows places and distances. But if you want to show how a town's population grew over ten years, a graph does the job better than any map. That is why geographers never use one tool for everything. First they ask, 'What do I want to show — a place, a change, or a process?' and then they pick the drawing that answers that question most clearly.

Maps & diagramsMap: flat drawing→Diagram: one ideaMaps & diagrams
2. Scale and Direction
🏷 Tags: scale, direction, north arrow, compass, measurement

ENGLISH

Scale links map distance to ground distance: 1 cm = 1 km means 4 cm on the map is 4 km on the ground. Direction comes from the north arrow and the compass: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW. Without scale and direction, a map cannot be used for measurement.

Here is a step-by-step habit that will save you marks. Step one: read the scale before you measure anything. Step two: measure the map distance with a ruler. Step three: multiply by the scale — for example, 4 cm on a 1 cm = 1 km map means 4 km on the ground. For direction, always find the north arrow first; once you know where north is, the other seven directions fall into place around the compass. A common mistake is to guess direction from the top of the page — the top of the page is north only when the north arrow says so.

Scale & direction1 cm = 1 km→Compass pointsScale & direction
3. Symbols, Keys and Grids
🏷 Tags: symbols, key, legend, grid reference, colours

ENGLISH

Maps use conventional symbols (blue for water, green for low land, brown for high land) explained in the key/legend. A grid of numbered lines lets us give a place a grid reference, so anyone can find it exactly.

Symbols are like a secret code, and the key is the code-book. Nobody expects you to memorise every symbol — even experienced map readers check the key first. Colours follow a pattern you can remember: blue is almost always water, green is low, flat land, and brown is high land, because brown looks like the colour of mountain rock and soil. Grid lines work like the rows and columns of a classroom seating plan: give the row number and the column number, and anyone can walk straight to the right seat — or, on a map, to the right place.

Symbols & gridsKey explains symbols→Grid referenceSymbols & grids
4. Types of Maps

ENGLISH

Physical maps show landforms and rivers; political maps show boundaries; thematic maps show one theme (rainfall, population, crops). A good map has a title, scale, north arrow, key and neat border — check all five before using it.

Before you open any map, ask yourself what you need. If you need mountains and rivers, pick a physical map. If you need the boundary between two countries or provinces, pick a political map. If you need rainfall, population or crops in different areas, pick a thematic map — it colours or shades one theme so the pattern jumps out at you. And whatever map you pick, run the five-point check: title, scale, north arrow, key, border. If even one is missing, say so in your answer — examiners like a student who checks before trusting a map.

Map typesPhysical→Political→ThematicMap types

Multiple Choice Questions
1.1 A map's scale links

Answer: Map distance to ground distance.

1.2 Blue on a map usually means

Answer: Water.

1.3 A thematic map shows

Answer: One theme.

1.4 NE stands for

Answer: North-east.

1.5 The key/legend

Answer: Explains symbols.

Short Answer Questions
1.1 Define scale with an example.

Answer: Map-to-ground ratio, e.g. 1 cm = 1 km. That is why every map question starts with the scale: without the map-to-ground ratio, a centimetre on paper means nothing at all.

1.2 Name the five parts of a good map.

Answer: Title, scale, north arrow, key, border. If one part is missing — say there is no north arrow — say so in your answer, because a map without direction cannot be trusted for direction questions.

1.3 What is a grid reference for?

Answer: Finding a place exactly on a map. A grid reference is really an address: the numbers tell a stranger exactly which square to look in, without needing local knowledge.

1.4 Give one use each of physical and political maps.

Answer: Physical: landforms/rivers. Political: boundaries. In an exam, name the map type first, then its use — 'physical map: landforms and rivers' — because the type and the use together earn the mark.

Long Answer Questions
1.1 On a map of scale 1 cm = 2 km, two towns are 6 cm apart. Find the ground distance, and explain how you would also give one's direction from the other.

Answer: Ground distance = 6 × 2 = 12 km. Direction: use the north arrow and compass bearing from one town to the other. Work it step by step and show the multiplication: 6 cm × 2 km per cm = 12 km. For direction, stand at the first town, find north from the north arrow, then use the compass points to say where the second town lies — never guess direction from the edge of the page.

1.2 Draw (describe) a small thematic map of rainfall in Pakistan and list the five parts a good map must have.

Answer: A map shaded by rainfall zones with title, scale, north arrow, key (shading = rainfall ranges) and border. Shade three or four rainfall zones (for example, low, medium, high) and let the key say what each shade means; a thematic map without a key is just colours. Then add the other four parts — title, scale, north arrow and border — and check all five before you finish.

ENGLISH

This chapter taught you the geographer's toolkit: a map is a flat, scaled drawing of an area, while diagrams show one idea clearly. You learned how scale turns map centimetres into ground kilometres, how the north arrow and compass give direction, how symbols and the key decode a map, how grid references pinpoint a place, and how physical, political and thematic maps each do a different job — plus the five-point check of a good map.

Revision guidance: Revise in this order: first the five parts of a good map (say them without looking), then one worked scale sum (6 cm at 1 cm = 2 km), then the eight compass points in order, then one example each of physical, political and thematic maps. Finish by doing the exercise MCQs from memory — if you miss one, re-read only that section.
