ABOUT THIS PAGE — PROVENANCE

This page is built from the PunjabTest library master for Class 8 Geography, Chapter 10. No official Class 8 Geography textbook was on disk when it was built, so no official-book page numbers are claimed here. The exercise below is the SLO-based practice exercise from the library master, not the official textbook exercise — use your school book for the official exercise. Chapter order follows the PCTB Geography VI–VIII curriculum for Grade VIII; PECTAA has listed a revised Geography-8 for 2026–27, so if your school book reorders or renames chapters, follow your school book.

GIS (Geographic Information System) is computer mapping: layers of data (roads, rivers, population, rainfall) stacked on one digital map, so questions like 'where do floods hit poor areas?' can be answered by combining layers. Planners use GIS for cities, farms and disasters.

GIS is easiest to understand as a stack of transparent sheets. One sheet shows roads, another rivers, another where people live, another rainfall. Alone, each sheet answers one question. Stacked on a computer, they answer hard questions: where do flood waters meet poor neighbourhoods? Where should a new school go so children walk the shortest safe route? Where will a new road cut through farmland? Planners use GIS for cities, farms and disasters precisely because real decisions always involve several layers at once — and a paper map can only show one or two before it becomes unreadable.

2. Eyes in the Sky: Remote Sensing and GPS

Remote sensing reads Earth from satellites and aircraft — images show crops, forests, floods and city growth without visiting. GPS (Global Positioning System) uses satellites to give exact position anywhere; phones, ships and surveyors all use it.

Remote sensing means studying the Earth without touching it. Satellites and aircraft take pictures in light our eyes cannot even see, and those pictures reveal things a person on the ground would miss: a crop disease spreading across fields, a forest shrinking year by year, flood water spreading across a plain at night. GPS is the partner tool: a receiver listens to signals from satellites and works out its exact position anywhere on Earth, within a few metres. Your phone's map, a ship at sea and a surveyor marking a road all use the same system — which is why learning 'GPS gives exact position' is worth a mark on its own.

Aerial photographs (from planes/drones) show detail at street and field level — better than satellite images for small areas. But technology never replaces fieldwork: geographers still visit, measure, interview and check what images suggest.

Aerial photographs — from planes and now drones — fill the gap between satellite images and the ground. A satellite shows a whole district; an aerial photograph shows a single street, a single field, a single drain, clearly enough to plan repairs. But here is the professional rule every geographer learns: an image suggests, fieldwork confirms. A dark patch on a photograph might be a pond, or just a shadow. Only visiting, measuring, and asking the people who live there tells you which. That is why fieldwork — notebooks, measuring tapes, interviews — is still taught even in the age of satellites.

Modern tools raise new duties: location data is private and must be protected; images can be misread (a shadow is not a flood); and maps can mislead if layers are wrong. Good geographers check sources, dates and ground truth before believing any digital map.

New tools bring new responsibilities, and this section is really about honesty. First, location data is private: a phone that records where a child walks to school holds information that could harm them in the wrong hands, so it must be protected, not shared carelessly. Second, images can be misread: a shadow looks like a flood, a dry field looks like a desert, a cloud looks like smoke. Third, maps can mislead even when they look professional — if a layer is old, or from the wrong district, the map's confident answer is wrong. The good geographer's habit, before believing or sharing any digital map, is always the same three checks: source, date, ground truth.

10.5 Fieldwork is needed because

Answer: Images suggest, fieldwork confirms.

Short Answer Questions
10.1 What is GIS?

Answer: Computer mapping with stacked data layers. One sentence defines it: computer mapping with stacked data layers — if your answer has 'layers', it has the heart of GIS.

10.2 Give one GIS question it can answer.

Answer: E.g. where do floods hit poor areas? (any layered question). Any layered question works: 'where do floods hit poor areas?' is the classic, because it needs a flood layer and a poverty layer together — one layer alone cannot answer it.

10.3 What is remote sensing?

Answer: Reading Earth from satellites/aircraft images. Remote sensing is reading, not visiting: Earth is read from satellite or aircraft images, which show crops, forests, floods and city growth from above.

10.4 Why protect location data?

Answer: It is private; misuse can harm people. Location data is private because it reveals where a person lives, works and walks: in the wrong hands it can harm them, so it must be protected, not shared carelessly.

Long Answer Questions
10.1 Your town floods often. Explain how GIS, satellite images and fieldwork together would help plan flood protection, step by step.

Answer: GIS layers: rivers, elevation, poor areas, roads. Satellite images: flood extent, growth. Fieldwork: check drains, interview residents, verify maps. Plan: embankments, drains, safe routes. Step by step: GIS layers (rivers, elevation, poor areas, roads) show where water will go and who is in the way; satellite images show past flood extent and growth; fieldwork checks drains, interviews residents and verifies the maps. Then the plan follows: embankments, drains, safe routes. Tools first, plan last.

10.2 A viral map claims your district will flood tomorrow. How should a good geographer check it before sharing?

Answer: Check source, date, layers and ground truth; compare with official warnings; do not share until verified. Check before sharing, in order: source (who made this map?), date (is it current?), layers (are they the right district and the right data?), ground truth (does it match what is really there?), and official warnings (does it agree?). If any check fails, do not share until it is verified.

ENGLISH

This chapter brought geography into the computer age: GIS stacks data layers (roads, rivers, population, rainfall) on one digital map to answer layered questions like where floods hit poor areas. Remote sensing reads Earth from satellites and aircraft, GPS gives exact position anywhere, and aerial photographs show street- and field-level detail — but images only suggest, and fieldwork (visiting, measuring, interviewing) confirms. With these powers come duties: protect private location data, watch for misread images, check sources, dates and ground truth, and never share an unverified viral map.

Revision guidance: Revise by tool: one line each for GIS, remote sensing, GPS, aerial photographs and fieldwork — what it is and one use. Then rehearse the two habits examiners reward: the flood-plan sequence (GIS layers → satellite images → fieldwork → embankments, drains, safe routes) and the viral-map check (source, date, layers, ground truth, official warnings) before sharing anything.
